"It's their NAMES. Fuck the "cuteness", it's the NAMES that hold sway over the hipster throng. You can't deny folks named Julian Casablancas & Nikolai Volkov III (or whatever it is.)"

have you ever been tempted to like a band just because of the combination of the members names? have you ever been turned off by one for the same? or the band name itself? am i the only one for whom the name jimmy's chicken shack fills me with the horror, the combination of those three words inducing nausea and dizziness upon eye contact? am i the only one who thinks about these things?

jess, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

why must i be burdened by this brane of mine?

Band and record names more often than band member names (except in hip-hop where a name like Ol Dirty Bastard is plainly more appealing than a name like True Mathematics no matter how skilful the respective MCs).

Most recent utterly offputting name = Uncle Kracker.

All-time offputting name that I ended up liking = Belle And Sebastian, obviously.

Tom, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

tom = a mentalist re true mathematics obv

mark s, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Vic Sinex.

My all-time fave band name - Cockney Rebel.

Dr. C, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Superfly Jimmy Snuka!

David Raposa, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, this surpasses even Hector "Macho" Cammacho (sic).

Nicole, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sweet Daddy Siki!

fritz, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hip hop producer names: Timbaland sounds like it's here to stay, Swizz Beats (wowee!!!), Mannie Fresh reminds me of shiny metallic tics and tings, Rockwilder just sounds mad cool. Not sure if I thought these things before I heard the music.

Laavanyan, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hacksaw Jim Duggan?

David Raposa, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Iron Sheik!

fritz, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, I think it's Steve Nieve, which makes it more or less cool depending on who you ask.

Mickey Black Eyes, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Getting vaguely back on topic, I've always been fond of the names of the guys in the Damned - Rat Scabies, Captain Sensible. (Dunno a thing about the music, though.) Actually, most of the punka names make me giggle with glee - Ari Up, Poly Styrene, Jah Wobble ... um ... John Lydon?

Most modern rock band names (usually those containing numbers) nauseate me. Irrational misspellings (K instead of SC or C, removing vowels, trying to make the names sound HAWD, aw yeah) irritate me. One-name artists usually annoy me, too, just by default (especially if said one-name artist was once untouchable before a crippling bout with egotism).

Oh - and bands with endless permutations on their name, or those w/ an endless array of portentious side-projects, mmmGLAVEN. Makes me rowlf.

David Raposa, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I actually had it in for Urge Overkill before hearing them because of their names, especially because I kept mixing up Blackie Onassis with Blackie Lawless. Mind you, the fact that they were sub- BTO boogie crud didn't bring me around, either.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best, though, as got to be The Edge. I think it's the definitive article which sets him apart from other one-named artists. He sits in the rarefied rank that sees The Rock and The Automator. Apparently there are a limited number of those, unlike Sting, who is both a verb and a noun--and Madonna, who is both a virgin and a whore.

Mickey Black Eyes, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The definitive one-namer for me is "B" - Guitarist from Royal Crescent Mob. Or is that a one-letterer? Because the definitive on- letterer is D.Boon.

And then there's Budgie.

Another name you can't deny: Jet Black.

Dave225, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BEST: DARBY CRASH....my all time favorite name. WORST: STEVE PERRY....not as a name, but the image it brings

Gage-o, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and what about George "The Animal" Steele? NO one ever called him THE ANIMAL...it was always GEORGE "THE ANIMAL" STEELE. You've got it if you name includes your christian AND your nickname simultaneously.

Gage-o, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, speaking of The Edge, I guess his bandmate Mr. GoodVoice probably has to have one of the most pretentious assumed names in all of rawk.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You mean he wasn't paying homage to Sonny? Damn. He is SO not-cool anymore. or was it like, an abbrev. for bonhomie. I guess that'd be kinda pretentious cool. Wait, it's short for Bo Knows! Except, since I was practically toddler when "Bo" ruled the sports arena, I can only think of one Bo, and she sure ain't a football player. Ok, he is cool again.

Mickey Black Eyes, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's not exactly an "assumed" name, cuz Gavin Friday gave it to him as a kid. I kind of like it, actually. More than I like the man himself.

Sean, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would like any band that had a member named Luke Warm.

Is there one?

Mark, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wow, so how old is Gavin Friday then?

Mickey Black Eyes, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I really wanted to like Staind because their name was so archaic, like something out of Spenser.

Tom, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mickey (I feel like some huge U2 fan answering this); I guess Gavin is around the same age as the other guys. I think the story was they grew up near eachother in Ireland, and as youngsters they gave eachother funny names. I'm sure someone else can confirm this.

Sean, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

According to ye olde AMG, Jo Callis (Rezillos, Human League) was also known as Luke Warm.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

El Duce... Sickie Wifebeater... Dr. Heathen Scum... collectively, THE MENTORS. And King Diamond ain't bad either.

Andy, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to say Hoobastank again. And so I have.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always liked Klaus Flouride and East Bay Ray, almost enough to actually buy a DK record.

Mark, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but jess Nikolai Volkov is excellent! Mr. Volkov's seductive slavicity on "Passion" and "Bushes" kept scaring everyone at my halloween party each time Ramon put it on.

to answer the question yes; i doubt W.A.S.P. would have made it into my collection otherwise.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's too bad Klaus Voorman never made any records (that I'm aware of. Actually, he probably was on some records, but that didn't sell me on any of 'em.)

Dave225, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

would help i actually read anything deliberately ever - 'nikolai volkov' = 'marcus nikolai' which is decidedly <

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fuckin' Del the Funky Homosapien

Keiko, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bret Michaels, Bobby Dall, Rikki Rockett, CC DeVille = Poison!

james, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

going back a bit (not that I was there at the time thbough), I always though the lead singer of Herman's Hermits had a great name. Peter Noone...sure it's Noone as in "noon" but it also reads as "no one"

g, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Darby Crash and King Diamond are gaymo names. System of a Down have Armenian names like Shavo and Akasdjkjwrjedl. British heavy metal stars always have awesome band names, but their reg name is a bore ie: Rob Halford or Bruce Dickenson. Thats just like "Heres my awesome kickass brutal band Immortal Defication with Al on vocals." The combination of the words "Axl and Slash" were pretty powerful in the late 80's if i remember correctly.

chaki, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Didn't Pop Will Eat Itself credit most of their songs as written by the 'collective name' of Vestan Pance.....

But i think the overall winner in the Bad Band Name But Great Music category has to be the Kitchens Of Distinction....

Peri Komo, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the name Darby Crash.

Sean, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How 'bout Howling Pete Ahlqvist of the Hives? In fact, they've all got pretty neat monikers.

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Err sorry Howlin' Pelle I think is his name. I'm tired and confused.

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nanker Phelge

fritz, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Charlemagne Palestine

Johan, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

WORST: STEVE PERRY....not as a name, but the image it brings

You mean shag cuts, gargled throat exercises and a shit-eating smile carved out of the finest aged American cheese slice package?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Names of bands/albums I've had to overcome my distaste for b/c the music was good: Kitchens of Distinction, Timbaland (sorry, I thought the whole "referencing sweet-ass boots" thing was wack-as-fuck, like NyKie or something), Comsat Angels, Echo and the Bunnymen (Chriiiiist), etc. (I'm tired!)

Names that are spelled "wrong" annoy me like shit: STEPHIN Merritt (wtf?), WINDY and Carl (ohhh, punch me hard), any artist named MICHEAL ("Hey, honey, wouldn't it be cute if we reversed the "a" and the "e"--then he can spend an entire lifetime correcting well-meaning and sensible clerks and secretaries!"), hmm, there are more.

Speaking of misspellings, at the time this phenomenon annoyed me, but now I think it's classic: the unrelenting plethora of slangly-spelled words on hiphop albums and songs in the early-to-mid 90s. I guess it happens still, but it seemed to be REALLY insane back then. I'm just making one up off the top, but you know like "FUKKIN WIT DA UPSTAIRZ NABUZZ" or something. Hmmm, this is a fun thread possibility... ;-)

Clarke B., Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

MICHEAL ("Hey, honey, wouldn't it be cute if we reversed the "a" and the "e"--then he can spend an entire lifetime correcting well-meaning and sensible clerks and secretaries!")
Erm, I think you'll find that's how most well-meaning and sensible clerks and secretaries in the UK seem to spell Michael/Micheal!!!

Anyway, wot about some of the brilliant UK punk names: Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious, Rat Scabies, Vic Vomit, etc., ... And some of the gabber DJ names are pretty interesting too eg DJ Fistfuck, etc.!!!!

Old Fart!!!!!!

Old Fart!!!!, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blixa Bargeld.

Viv Savage - Yes. David St. Hubbins - No.

And then there's this band, who I don't know anything about - but I bet they're like BoysIIMen, which would make me want to snap someone's neck - Boyoyo Boys. I always thought that was a great name - too bad they suck.

Rat Scabies is a good one. And John Doe, Billy Zoom, Richard Hell, Raven Slaughter, Crocus Behemoth. NOT Bily Idol.

BTW - Echo & the Bunnymen used that name intentionally so they would never take themselves seriously. (Apparently, that trick didn't work.)

Dave225, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

re above, Klaus Voorman played on lots and lots of records, including most of Lennon's solo stuff. But better still, he was once in a band called Paddy, Klaus and Gibson. No 'combo' in history has ever sounded more like a provincial solicitors practice.

Snotty Moore, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I could never like a band called Biffy Clyro. The mere thought of that name makes me feel queasy. However, I like the sound of a DJ called The Shoreditch Twat.
