Great 'singles' between 6 and 7 minutes long

There's a lot of great sub-6min songs, right, and a lot of overwrought but classic over 7 minute songs. But there's this dead zone in between! If a pop group is making an over-6 track they better have a good reason, right! This is an easy one if you've got all your stuff as MP3s of course. The only rule is that the song has to be relatively friendly, ie no field recordings tacked on the end or Mahavishnu Orchestra songs.

Bonus Statistics:
# of Peter Gabriel songs that showed up in this Smart Playlist: 15
Number of XTC songs I couldn't include since they were long because of a godawful "rap" in the middle: 1

Just a sample:

Built to Spill: Randy Described Eternity [6:05]
Squeeze: Black Coffee in Bed [6:07]
Peter Gabriel: Lay Your Hands on Me [6:09]
Radiohead: Paranoid Android [6:23]
Faith No More: King For a Day [6:35]
Wilco: I Am Trying To Break Your Heart [6:56]
Jim O'Rourke: Get a Room [6:57]
My Bloody Valentine: Soon [6:58]

hey jude, of course

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hey Jude" is above 7 minutes (would have been a better record had 3 minutes been edited away at the end though).

"Like a Rolling Stone", however, is one of those canonical classics that clearly belong here.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Pulp : This Is Hardcore 6:26

Shooz (shooz), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Elton John-Tiny Dancer 6:06

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I have seen "Bohemian Rhapsody" clock in at 6.00 in some CDs. However, in others, it is just 5.58 or something.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Errr... an awful lot of dance tracks.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i always had a soft spot for 'Whatever' by Oasis.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba: mostly looking for pop/verse-chorus-bridge tracks

caspar (caspar), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

If memory serves, "Why Can't I Touch It?" (Buzzcocks) is exactly 6:30.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder - "Together In Electric Dreams" 6:25
The Gap Band - "Early In The Morning" 6:31 (I suspect a lot of funk that charted fits into this category)
Tears For Fears - "Shout" 6:33
Belle & Sebastian - "Stay Loose" and a few others
Wham! - "Wham Rap" 6:41 (though the single mix was much shorter)
The Smiths - "How Soon Is Now?" 6:43

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Prince - "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" (Comes in at 6:29 on Sign 'O' the Times, though the radio edit is only 3:40)

Parliament - Mothership Connection (Star Child) 6:13

Gregory T (tubesocks), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The radio edit and live versions of "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" far outshine the album version. I put the latter on a mixtape once and it *killed* the momentum.

Other suggestions:

Tears for Fears, "The Seeds of Love"

Bon Jovi, "Bed of Roses" (their last Top 10 hit and only good power ballad)

Bran Van 3000, "Astounded"

Wilco + Billy Bragg, "Remember the Mountain Bed" (is the title right?)

Raspberries, "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)" (I think it goes on this long)

Wham!, "Careless Whisper" (cheezy but still effective after all these years)

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Delgados - 'No Danger' (6:32)
Jeff Buckley - 'Hallelujah' (6:53)
The Kinks - 'Australia' (6:47)
Gene Clark - 'Strength Of Strings' (6.33)
The Kingsbury Manx - 'Silver Trees' (6:45)
The The - 'Uncertain Smile' (6:52)
Sonic Youth 'Teen Age Riot' (6:59)
The Wedding Present's best song - 'Octopussy' (6:21)
Television's best song - 'The Dream's Dream' (6:31)
Maybe the Pet Shop Boys' best song - 'Left To My Own Devices' (6:20)
Maybe the Smiths' best song - 'The Queen Is Dead' (6.24)

Cor, our Hongro's a right Nordic nutbag, isn't he?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 11 November 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeez, is there no sense of history here? The original "long" single was the album version of The Doors'"Light My Fire", at 6:50. Not my personal fave, but it effing changed the world.

The Electrician - Walker Brothers (6:10)

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Thursday, 11 November 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

JC Chasez - All Day Long I Dream About Sex

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 11 November 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"Paranoid Android" - Radiohead, 6:23.

The movie quote is from the mighty Big Lebowski.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 11 November 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hey Jude" certainly would be better without the last three minutes. I mean, the song itself is a quite nice melodic ballad, typical of McCartney's ballad style at its best, and it has deservedly become part of the songbook "canon".

Those boring and repetitive sequences towards the end are dragging the entire thing down a lot though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 11 November 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Funky 4 + 1 "That's the Joint" 6:12

Not That Chuck, Thursday, 11 November 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, how long is the Optikonfusion mix of Acen's "Close Your Eyes"? Because even though it's a dance track it still broadly follows a verse-chorus-bridge pattern.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The version of 'Rock Your Baby' by George McCrae that I have is six minutes twenty. Pretty damned lush.

Then, explain the inclusion of "Soon" in your list...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe "Leave it All Behind" by Ride is at least 7 mins. long and was released as a single.

Isn't "Jesus of Suburbia" by Green Day like 7 mins. long too?

Killing Joke's 'Love Like Blood' and the Chameleons 'Swamp Thing' are both around that sort of length, but I really can't remember if they were edited down for the singles or not.
