DOPESMOKER (smile), Thursday, 11 November 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok let me preface this by saying my Jazz, Rap, Country etc. are currently filed seperately from Rock/Pop, or these would be different.
ABBA/AC/DC/Aerosmith
Beach Boys/Beatles/Beck
Chemical Brothers/The Clash/Clinic
Oh no! no Devo! ( I used to have "Are we not men?", need it again eventually )
Einsturzende Neubauten/Brian Eno/Fairport Convention
Faith No More/The Fall/Faust
Fleetwood Mac/Peter Gabriel/Serge Gainsbourg
PJ Harvey/Jimi Hendrix/The Hives

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

othing: AC/DC : acid mothers temple
beastie boys : Beatles : bedhead
circulatory system: The Clash : leonard cohen
dead machines: Devo : double leopards
Brian Eno - don't own any (shocking!)
everlasting the way : The Fall : faust
Peter Gabriel - don't own any (never did)
Jimi Hendrix - don't own any (anymore)

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 11 November 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

(Pretty clever there, requesting only "A" thru "H" and calling it "Pt. 1". That's using your head, peepee!)

[CDs only; checking vinyl requires heavy lifting]

Abba...AC/DC...Ace of Base
Beastie Boys...BEATLES...Beau Brummells
Dave Clark Five...THE CLASH...Claw Hammer
Deviants...DEVO...Dictators
The English Beat...ENO...John Fahey (Strange: I USED to have Melissa Etheridge. Either it's lost or I sold it)
Faith No More...THE FALL...Faust
Funkadelic...PETER GABRIEL...Diamanda Galas
Richard Hell...JIMI HENDRIX...Bernard Herrmann

Something of minor interest: "The ENGLISH Beat" isn't an actual band name, of course - just an altered name forced upon The Beat for their North American releases. So, if I lived in the UK, but had the same CD collection,

"Beastie Boys...BEATLES...Beau Brummells" would become:
"The Beat...BEATLES...Beau Brummells"; and
"The English Beat...ENO...John Fahey" would become:
"Duke Ellington...ENO...John Fahey"

Fascinating, yes?

STACK OF VINYL-TO-BE-SOLD:

(don't be alarmed, it's late-'80s ac/dc, 'blow up your video,' and i'm not sure what i'm doing with it in the first place.)

don't have any devo or gabriel in any format, or for sale. hendrix is in storage in a box deep inside a closet and i don't have the energy to dig it out and see what's in storage next to it.

Beach Boys, BEATLES, Beck

Cibo Matto, CLASH, Clem Snide

Elastica, ENO, Everything But the Girl

(No AC/DC, Devo, Fall, Gabriel, or Hendrix -- well, okay, a Fall mix CD that N/A made me, but I file those separately)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 11 November 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't actually have a single CD by *any* of the artists mentioned! I have much of them on mp3, but it's still surpising, even to me!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 11 November 2004 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, I also have NONE of the mentioned artists... but here's what I have around the gaps.

A Camp -- Afghan Whigs
Badly Drawn Boy -- Beaumont
Cibo Matto -- Club 8
Destroyer -- Dire Straits
Electric Light Orchestra -- Esthero
Jason Falkner -- the Flaming Lips
Mitchell Froom -- Galaxie 500
Michael Hedges -- Kristin Hersh

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 11 November 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

ha! I would only have Devo and The Fall BUT mine and my boyfriend's record collections are merged (well serious, innit) so I think I have them all.

The Action -- AC/DC -- Adam And The Ants
The Beach Boys - THE BEATLES -- The BeeGees (Okay, so far none of my own records have come up in this)
Aha! No Clash. Good Good.
Deep Purple (aaaagh no) -- DEVO -- Dexy's Midnight Runners (*phew* the last two are mine)
The Embrooks - ENO - Roky Erikson
The Factory -- THE FALL -- The Fat Tulips
(or, on CD this time) Eugenius -- THE FALL -- The Famous Monsters
No Peter Gabriel, thank God (although I'm sure Mr Emily has a single somewhere)
Cool, no Jimi Hendrix, either - I hate the wanky little adolescent.

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 11 November 2004 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Emily that likes Deep Purple and AC/DC better.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I like ANYBODY who doesn't like Deep Purple and AC/DC better. (Well, this could be untrue, actually).

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 11 November 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

like your boyfriend?

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

No, not much. (This could also be untrue.)

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 11 November 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I just like the way you're all like "Ew, that's icky boy music".

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not "icky boy music". I like Merzbow, goddamn it! It's just crap music. (This IS TRUE.)

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 11 November 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, are you trying to tell me that The BeeGees can be described as "icky boy music"? I mean, they are pretty icky.

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 11 November 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I started a joke that started the whole world crying.
But I didn't see that the joke was on me.

For that song alone, the BeeGees totally rule.

AC/DC is not crap music on any planet I've heard of.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Beatles are bookended by The Zombies and The Kinks (Section : '60's giants')
Currently on either side of the Clash are The Subway Sect and X-Ray Spex ('London Punk')
Eno is next to Talking Heads and Roxy Music ('Eno and friends')
The Fall are next to The Passage and The Blue Orchids in CDs('Manchester non-Factory') and The Distractions and Ludus in vinyl.

You might have gathered that I don't like alphabetical filing.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, to be fair, you could possibly argue that AC/DC have particularly male qualities, if you were going to be idiotically stereotypical about it. But both The BeeGees and Deep Purple would then be relegated to GURLY GURL music status.

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa, have you ever actually listened to Deep Purple?

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep. Sounds pretty GIRLY to me, gurly-boy.

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

HA, you are mentalist. Check, please.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you sure you're not thinking of Deep Blue Something?

I mean Space Truckin? Highway Star? Smoke on the Fucking Water? Girly? You're joshing me.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

No, seriously, they have the big guitars and everything, but there's something about it that's really effeminate cock-rock. So, I would place them on the girly side, if forced to do so. Personally, I think attempting to segregate what's masculine and what's feminine about music is kind of stupid, though.

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

You started it.

BTW, Ian Gillian when he's singing in say, the Highway Star video, is one of the least effeminate men I've ever seen. Even compared to Bon Scott.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I started it? What, pray tell, is this?

I just like the way you're all like "Ew, that's icky boy music".

GAH!

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

You made a point of noting which ones actually belonged to your boyfriend.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but not because he's a BOY, merely because they are not mine, and I wish to remove myself from the potential stigma of owning RUBBISH. And anyway, plenty of the others are his as well, but obviously as they don't fit into your pantheon of maleness they were not worth commenting on.

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

um no, pantheon of maleness has got nothing to do with it. That was a joke and I don't care about that either.

The implication of your post is that The Action, AC/DC, Adam And The Ants, The Beach Boys, The Beatles,The BeeGees, The Clash, Deep Purple, Peter Gabriel and Jimi Hendrix are all "RUBBISH" which should get you laughed off any music board that I would post to.
You're intitled to your opinion though. Not that it was asked of you on this thread.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

entitled, whatever.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I would have to find those records. Ever since we redid our room, I just stuck the CDs in there not caring about order. WHich means I need half an hour to find a record and I usually end up with sth else.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, you can erase The Action, Adam And The Ants and The Beach Boys from that list (they were only really in there because I did find it a bit strange that none of my own records had been next to one of the named artists yet), and you will be left with a list full of toss.

The stigma thing was kind of a joke, too, as I am well aware that these artists are somewhat popular amongst the youth of today(although Peter Gabriel strikes me as a bit off).

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I file my records in an order labyrinthine and incomprehensible to anyone except me. Thus, for example, Criminal Minded by Boogie Down Productions has always sat next to Back In Black by AC/DC on my shelves for no other reason than "Dope Beat" off the former samples the title track of the latter and I felt like making a note about it sometime in 1987 and somehow they've stayed together, like the Duckworths.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah my method's my own - it's not particularly hard to work out, but there are some idiosyncrasies.

I like these dumb questions because they encourage me to go rummaging through cupboards and I end up listening to something I haven't heard for a while. I don't file alphabetically and I don't gots no Devo, so:

UB40 -- AC/DC -- Stan Freberg
(nothing, end of row) -- Beatles -- Love
Rip Rig and Panic -- The Clash -- M/A/R/R/S
Rush -- Brian Eno -- Astrud Gilberto
The Third Wave -- The Fall -- T.Rex
Haircut 100 -- Peter Gabriel -- The Psychedelic Furs
Billy Bragg -- Jimi Hendrix -- Paco De Lucia

As you can probably tell I acquired most of the above (on vinyl) in the early '80s

Am I the only one who files Hendrix under J? The act's name is The Jimi Hendrix Experience so they go under J with me, much like the Rolling Stones would go under R and not S.

Anyway, he/they are lodged between the Happy Mondays and David Holmes I think.
