Riddim, Stand Backward!

You get to the show and the rhythm section guy you know and love, instead of staying back where he belongs, has had his head turned by the sweet smell of solo projects, and is now front and center w/ acoustic guitar in hand, strumming and singing. In the drum chair or, let's say, the bass seat, is some Rent-A-Musician Utility Bass Player who veers between being inaudible and being way too audible. To be charitable to him, he has done better than his peers, who are still back home couch surfing in [AB][uo]st[io]n. I don't have too many examples, right now, Nick Lowe, Blake Babies, Grant Hart, but I know I don't like it.

What say you?

Like, uh, Ringo?

Maybe, but I don't think he will be playing out with his original band anytime soon.

I was actually considering mentioning Paul, but I haven't been following his career since he parted ways with Denny Laine.

Right, but I might actually go see Ringo if he was playing drums for his band rather than touring with two other drummers and singing the whole time.

Oh, who am I kidding, I wouldn't go anyway.

Oh, I thought you were trying to draw me into a trap, but you were serious. In that case, I agree with you. If I were to go and see Ringo, I would want to see him do his thing. If I want to see fancy drumming, I'll go buy an instructional video.

If you've ever seen the Carl Perkins tribute thing from the 80s, there is a bit where Carl Perkins asks host Dave Edmunds "who else you got back there?" and Dave says "well, Richie's here" and Carl in mock surprise says "Richie? Ringo!" Then Ringo comes out and plays on some reduced kit which actually sounds really good. No other drummer is visible. I guess Old Carl brought out the best in those boys.
