"Stick the bone in" - who sang it?

who sang this?? it's recently popped back into my head and for the life of me i can't remember who sang it. as far as i remember it was on the B-side of a 12" single, or possibly the last track on an album. and it descended into a boozy singalong kind of thing. might even have had comedy "barking" in it. also, i suspect it was by a bunch of checked shirt wearing yanks, circa 89/90.

Good God, I had that song somewhere or other! And it was pretty shit whatever it was, wasn't it? I'm singing it to myself now, and it sort of sounds like Soul Asylum, but I don't think it was them at all... I dunno, uh, something dopey like the Electric Love Muffin?

Fuck, it was Soul Asylum, but it's called 'PUT the bone in'.

Put the bone in
She yelled at the store
'Cause my doggie's been hit by a car
And I do want to bring him home something
Put the bone in
She yelled out once more
Because the meat from the pork is so sweet
And the bone from the pork give to me
Put the bone in she begged him
As she paced across the floor
Put the bone in she yelled out once more

It was on Hang Time.

That was originally a Terry Jax B-side to Seasons in the Sun ...

"Jacks", that is.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 12 November 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

good work. not least because i'm now singing seasons in the sun to myself. hope it doesn't make me cry like it did when i was a nipper.

dave225 is right.

Was the original any good?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 12 November 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i actually have jacks "seasons in the sun" on 7" somewhere. jeez, i've got this thing TWICE in my house. must dig it out.

bg, Friday, 12 November 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

...with a view to cremating the thing perhaps?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 12 November 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

some sort of exorcism definitely needs to be performed, definitely.

bg, Friday, 12 November 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

note, that's a double definitely. none of this definitely maybe shit.

That's weird because my wife's college roomate also had two copies of the 7" (on Bell records I think...?)

My recollection is that it was a horribly boring, Don McClean sort of song.

That "bone-us" (as it's listed on the cover of later pressings of Hang Time) is one of the most compelling arguments against putting stupid-ass secret songs at the end of a record.
