no thread on the Freeform Five album? (aka TS: FF vs SS)

they're not going to crossover like the Scissor Sisters are they? despite 'Easy' probably being a better ballad than 'Mary' (mainstream appeal poss. offset by stronger electronic production nous - not just there but throughout the album in fact) and a general similarity (pop-sensibility, disco-love, glamour factor), plus arguably better male and female vocals than SS

yes/no?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:02 (twenty years ago)

is the album good?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:10 (twenty years ago)

I've only ever heard two Freeform Five songs, and really I would never ever have come up with the Scissor Sisters comparison.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:11 (twenty years ago)

the first half seems pretty strong and would reel a lot of people in nicely. not so sure the second half matches up but maybe with more listens.

more than one of their tracks has been v popular in clubs for the last 18 months no? they could use the Groove Armada 'you know them more than you think you do' style tagline really...

they're not as overtly camp as the SS (heh) - it just struck me they have a few things in common, and coming from a similar angle.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:16 (twenty years ago)

hmm. then again I have only heard "eeaaaooowww" and another one, can't remember what it's called, really pounding electro thing.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:20 (twenty years ago)

you'll like a lot of it i think Lex

'Electromagnetic' - sleek sexy pounding electro-pop, very Jake Shearsy vox and great female accompaniment

'Eeeeaaoowww' - not feeling Bounty Killer on this but still a big tune, proven by disco science

'Losing My Control' - bit of a Timba vibe, could be a Christina Milian backtrack pretty easily - reminds me of some of the stuff from the strangely underlooked and equally varied Space Cowboy album

'Easy' - aforementioned ballad - pretty sweet, Tamara's vocals only

'Strangest Things' - hectic floor-filler, not really doing it for me but apparently the remixes is killer

'No More Conversations' - nice straight pop-dance number, bit like something Xenomania would do!

'Let Me Down' - nicks same break as Prodigy's 'Poison' to good effect, bit of a dead end after that tho - bit too filler

'Slow' - another ballad, maybe a response to 'Easy' - more sparse and timid, just not that interesting on first impression

'Shame' - great double handclaps once again, jaunty latin funk thrills

'Ask Me Tomorrow' - pop-rock filler, falsetto vox again but doesn't quite lift it enough

'What Are You Waiting For' - ANOTHER ballad! very comedown, nicely arranged and lush strings but maybe lacking real spark

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:33 (twenty years ago)

'Electromagnetic' rendered me suicidal, but I may acquire the odd track someday.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Strangest Things! That's the other one I have. I really, really love Bounty Killer on Eeaaaowww. From the two I've heard, the concept of a Freeform Five ballad does not compute.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:38 (twenty years ago)

people probably thought about the Scissor Sisters at first as well tho

Barima you don't rate 'Electromagnetic'? have i stepped into a parallel universe where everything is opposite this week?!??!

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Me am liking 'Electromagnetic' for short time! Me also like venereal diseases and rhubarb!

B.I.Z.A.R.R.O. B.A.R.M.S. #1 (Barima), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:45 (twenty years ago)

I'm downloading some stuff now; I had known them before simply as the excuse for a fantastic Ewan Pearson remix

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:51 (twenty years ago)

i hate hair police

Spinning Down Alone You Spin Alive (ex machina), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:06 (twenty years ago)

I really wanted to like this, but I can only enjoy the singles Eeeeaaoowww and Strangest Things (of which I prefer the non -vocal dub mix) I am sad to report.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:28 (twenty years ago)

still totally loving Electrogmagnetic and Losing My Control - the latter could be the great lost Britney & Justin duet

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:40 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Richard X has remixed 'No More Conversations' - this can only be great

Stevem On X (blueski), Thursday, 13 January 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

six months pass...
This Misch Masch mix starts slow but gets all crazy electro funky - yay!

(is there a discussion of this on one of the bobbins threads?)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

bump.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

I have only heard the new Misch Masch in the store but it sounded great. If they split the differences between their inclinations on the mix and their inclinations on their actual album the resulting combination would be perfect, I think.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 21 July 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

the recently reissued remixes of "Electromagnetic" are essential. Lindstrom on one and Tiefschwarz on the other. Tiefschwarz in particular is brilliant.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

I heard somewhere that the album's going to be repromoted this autumn with a bonus disc of remixes. It's well worth getting whatever way it's packaged.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

yeah appears to be alot of repackaging etc going on.

we have one of them, Anu I presume, DJing for us in September.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

This Misch Masch mix starts slow but gets all crazy electro funky - yay!

Sweet funky Christmas is this ever true. I worked the longest day of my life yesterday and would have keeled over dead if it weren't for this mix. I am now curious about their other work.

Also: HOLY JESUS @ the Richard X remix of "No More Conversations". At first I was worried about missing it (I only have the set as one big mixed MP3 until I take thirty bucks to Amoeba). Then I was worried about it getting completely overshadowed by the combination of that Diplo song with whatever song they blended it with (as my English teachers weep). Then it started playing and I immediately stopped worrying, as I had forgotten that Mr. X might as well make music specifically for me and me alone.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Saturday, 23 July 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

Tiefschwarz in particular is brilliant.

I cannot stress this enough.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 23 July 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

yeah it's really the most fucked up great thing they've done since the Phonique or Spektrum mixes isn't it?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 24 July 2005 08:47 (twenty years ago)

The dub instead of the "normal" remix innit?
I think their Goldfrapp remix is way, way better though.

Omar (Omar), Sunday, 24 July 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

I heard somewhere that the album's going to be repromoted this autumn with a bonus disc of remixes. It's well worth getting whatever way it's packaged.

Thr promo I've got has the remix disc in situ. The actual misch masch album is brilliant, the best weird party mix cd i've heard in a good while.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 24 July 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

Charlie, Billy means the Freeform Five album, not the Misch Masch set which comes with the bonus disc as a matter of course (as did Tiefschwarz's Misch Masch release). The remixes on the bonus dic of the repromoted Freeform Five will presumably be focusing on remixes of FF rather than remixes by them - although they'd be insane not to include the Freeform Reform Dub of "Strangest Things".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 24 July 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Also: HOLY JESUS @ the Richard X remix of "No More Conversations"

YES, and

they'd be insane not to include the Freeform Reform Dub of "Strangest Things"

YES.

The first disc is really my favorite DJ mix in a really long time.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

The groove under "Eddik" is a MONSTER (anyone know if it's on that actual record?).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

...or maybe it's this Comateens "Get Off My Case (dub)"!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Misch Masch is easily the mix of the year for me so far.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 6 August 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
just found a promo copy of this in the bins. wow. exactly what i have been looking for.
time to hunt down for that reissue of the album proper then i guess.

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

It is a bit like the Space Cowboy album in a way, minus the full-on euphoric house stormers of course.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Just heard the Soul Mekanik remix of "No More Conversations" which is super HOTT. Still looking for that Richard X version in full - it's definitely one of the top 5 tracks of the year for me (I hope hope hope there's a dub too).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 September 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

fine records site says the "no more conversations" single will be out this month, "Remixes by Richard X, Mylo, Soul Mekanik & Alter Ego". they might want to hurry that along, then.

deaf leopard (haitch), Friday, 16 September 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

I love the Richard X remix on Misch Masch - Spencer's right, it's a stunning DJ mix.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 16 September 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

Even my die-hard rockist strawman co-worker asked me what I was playing and then ordered the disc from overseas! He loves "Countach."

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

There's just so many great moments! I particularly love "Alive & Kicking" which sorta fits my plea a while back for more epic acid-house-pop.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 17 September 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

This is now one of my all time top 10 mixes (maybe top 5). This should be more discussed!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

The Soulwax-Daan-Diplo-Freeform Five segment is still one of the most awesome things I've heard in music this year, period.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Saturday, 24 September 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...

omg the rmx disc looks fantastic!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

that "strangest things" dub is still so, so, so good. the lindstrom "electromagnetic" is v. nice too!

BUCK BUCK, nice shot (haitch), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

too weird. 30 mins ago i dug the FF mix cd out of the library and its totally refreshed my jaded eardrums ..
not seen the reissue. ta for the tipoff.

ps. releasing mixes called 'unreleased' always makes me smile, a contradiction in terms surely?

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

Heaven 17 remix??!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

on first play - i like it

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

has the album proper actually made it into the shops yet ? i haven't seen it.
also - re misch masch - on the second disc of promo edition there is a remix of brian wilson which is very very nice - was this lifted for the proper release version ?

label website is out of date so nothing helpful there ..

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
The Mylo remix is really incredible.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 26 January 2006 05:35 (nineteen years ago)

More weird drum solos plz.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 26 January 2006 05:39 (nineteen years ago)

was this lifted for the proper release version?

It was left off the proper release, yes.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 26 January 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...
has this not dated extremely poorly??

it is finally sunny + 80 degrees on a daily basis and yet i cannot get down with the used copy of FFF's "misch masch" i grabbed yesterday.

shut up you perky, ragga-loving chipmunks. nothing is worth smiling about today if you're not a trustfunded londoner. your midrangey synths are samey, and your choice of percussion instruments is random and lacks symmetry and grace.

your sound will slowly fade from the trendy jeans boutique, and when it has gone, your discs will become foggy and pitted and none shall remember your works.

i am going to go listen to basic channel instead.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

life is not a tent at the goddamn glastonbury festival. i will oppose you and your ilk to my dying breath.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

I don't get the greatness of the Richard X mix of No More Conversations...the Fedde Le Grand mix and the Mylo Radio Edit are amazing though.

musically, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

Listen to it about 1000 more times. It's the vocal chop up melody that's so blissful and melancholic at the same time.

This was easily my favorite track from 2005 (the Richard X remix in particular).

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

life is not a tent at the goddamn glastonbury festival.

MORE'S THE FUCKING PITY.

Freeform Five mostly blow, the album grates like hell, but that Richard X remix of No More Conversations is still sublime.

Matt DC, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

the new version of 'No More Conversations'...why?

blueski, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

ever have those moods where you're like, i can't decide if i want to listen to electrohouse, ragga ragga ragga, latin house, world beat or new wave? and you wish you could listen to them all at the same time?!?

yeah, me neither!! i've felt that way and besides i hate new wave AND world beat!!

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 27 April 2007 06:57 (eighteen years ago)

U MAD

haitch, Friday, 27 April 2007 08:49 (eighteen years ago)

why are they re-re-releasing 'no more conversations' again, though??

haitch, Friday, 27 April 2007 08:50 (eighteen years ago)

i like new beat and wave world

blueski, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:19 (eighteen years ago)
