TS: Franz Ferdinand - "Take Me Out" (Daft Punk remix) vs. Chemical Brothers - "Life Is Sweet" (Daft Punk remix)

It's interesting that the same group is on both ends of the remixing spectrum:

"Take Me Out" remix: a track that does little to the song's actual structure but changes it just subtly enough that you can detect a distinct uptick in the song's actual "oomph", an extension of the track's length and impact but still instantly recognizable as far as source material goes.

"Life is Sweet" remix: completely unrecognizable as a remix rather than a stand-alone track; I've listened to it upwards of 50 times since the first time I heard it in '97 and I still can't figure out which bit of the original Chemical Brothers track they actually built around. It almost seems like one of those Aphex pranks where some big-time rock act would ask him to remix their track and instead he just sticks the song's vocals on top of one of his own tracks that he'd already started working on. Only the Daft Punk remix doesn't even have vocals.

Which works better, then?

i'm pretty happy to see a full on return to old school remixing, tweaking tracks, increasing their impact and/ or extending them. I have nothing to say about the remixes you are referring to though, sorry.

I totally forgot about the "Life Is Sweet" Daft Punk remix! Classic. The only part that I recognize from the original song is the "Check it" sample (actually, they only use "check" and it sounds like "jack").

The Franz Ferdinand one isn't actually them, right?

it is.

i prefer the 'Life Is Sweet' ultimately i think - like that remix tho it gets a bit boring for the length

I haven't even heard the Life is Sweet remix, but judging by how dire the Franz Ferdinand remix is, I would have to say it must be better.

the franz ferdinand mix is amazing.

you need big speakers to realise the difference it makes, big bass drum and crazy synths=club of people going crazier than ever to the record without even realising it's a remix. (well, the non nerds don't anyway)

I should probably hear these.

The Franz Ferdinand mix is great. I play it when I dj and the punters don't notice a thing (because they only dance to things they know).

How is "not noticing a thing" a good remix? They would, as it sounds, not notice a thing if you just played the original - it just wouldn't have Daft Punk written on it too.

they react differently, for sure, but they don't know it's a remix. I said this already.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

it just makes me feel better about it (i don't like franz ferdinand by the way, but the punters ask for it every week)

I read what you said, but it felt like a daft punk fan being happier to play Franz Ferdinand to me. I just don't get it. TI thought there would be a lot more to it than there was - something that I might want to play or something (which was asking a lot for me from the background). I was hugely disappointed. I didn't want Franz Ferdinand with "oomph" I guess.

Actually the first time I heard the remix I didn't really notice what Daft Punk did to the song, except the warming up record player sound at the beginning. But with every listen I've heard something new.
