what is this stuff about? what is it like?

*@*.* (gareth), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

it's great. it's about freedom and energy and love.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 12 November 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

dood, buy *folk scene* before you die. you will thank me and then thank me again.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 12 November 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

'eared the new one yet? haven't, but i must gripe about the tower rec. reunion that didn't even play new york. doesn't like, half the band reside here?
that aside, the new matt valentine & erika elder long-player, ragas & blues, is pure melt. and better yet, it added another 9 to the usually impossible CoM editions of 99, making it 999! mass consumption, ahoy!

Beta (abeta), Friday, 12 November 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

come see them in dundee, *@*.*

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 13 November 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

the new one is pretty good! I like the extendo-drones better than the tiny snippets on folk scene, but i think the overall vibe of folkscene was more magical; this one's kind of a downer.

Ian is the new one The Galaxies’ Incredibly Sensual Transmission Field? Has anyone else heard it? I would love insight into if it's a good one to get first--it's the only one I've ever seen in shops!

Nanker Phelge, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

That is the new one, and I really, really, really like it! It's six tracks and fairly 'song-y' in approach. (whereas a lot of their other albums have lots of collaged together fragments this one sticks with six more structured pieces.)

I just picked up Fraternity of Moonwalkers for $4.99 brand new. There's more at the store if anyone's interested. Anyone? I haven't heard much of them and the limited edition vinyl I once had of Furniture Music is long gone, but I expect this disc is probably pretty good. Or at least worth what I paid for it.

Goodbye Brain, Monday, 27 June 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

I have the Galaxies' Incredible Sensual Transmission Field and I haven't heard Folk Scene so I can't compare the two, but the album is great. I'd recommend it.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I'd like a copy of fraternity of moonwalkers! email about it and whatnot.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 27 June 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Ian, if you live in NY, it's $4.99 at Academy Records on 18th street. Through the Academy website it's $8.00, which is still an okay price considering it seems to be kind of hard to find. You can get it here: http://www.academy-records.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=201925

I had been wondering why nobody snagged it in the 3 weeks since I first spotted it. When I finally decided to go ahead and buy it today, they reached around back and grabbed one of several copies and then returned the one with the $4.99 price tag back to the display shelf.

You were the guy who used to go by the name of Helios Creed, right? I recognize the dr.carl.sagan email from searching the archives for Helios Creed. Now that I see you're still around, I will have to go check and see if you contributed to my Helios Creed thread I made yesterday.

i haven't heard the first one, "parlor tricks and porch favorites" but the guy who runs amish, m@tt h@rm0n, sez good things about it and i'm gonna pick it up soon. definitely go see him live.

just got a promo link for the new pg six record -- sounds really good! more guitar heavy than usual, very much of a richard and linda thompson "pour down like silver" vibe.

tylerw, Monday, 27 June 2011 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

ooo sounds good. i loved The Well of Memory; never clicked w/ Slightly Sorry though.

nerve_pylon, Monday, 27 June 2011 16:09 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, this one improves on the sound of slightly sorry, i think. i liked that record, but it was lacking in something...new record seems to be a lot more muscular. great full band sound, more confident singing.

tylerw, Monday, 27 June 2011 16:11 (fourteen years ago)

awesome. i think there's a PG Six/Metal Mountains split LP in the works too..

wow, nice. when's that from?

has anyone seen mv&ee touring with their special sound system and live visuals? great show in london last night, that sound system really brings out the best in the gnarly neil young guitar solos, and after a slowish start i really got a ~thing~ going on with the visuals. perhaps it goes without saying but throughout i was thinking how amazing it would've been if i had been stoned.

But thank you all the same.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Sunday, 3 March 2013 07:44 (thirteen years ago)

didn't hear too many people talking about it, but that last pg six record was pretty happening.

tylerw, Sunday, 3 March 2013 15:08 (thirteen years ago)

oh i guess i was talking about it upthread a little bit.

tylerw, Sunday, 3 March 2013 15:12 (thirteen years ago)

maybe MFB and I are neighbors. sorry for the lack of heads up, i forgot to post it until later. pat is not great at promoting his shows.
i also really like the last pg six record.

only heard bits and pieces of pigeons, will have to check 'em out more.

i'm really spotty on my '77 dead, couldn't vote.

but. the copy on the link you posted is fucking golden:

WHAT DEAD HEADS HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT...

NEW HAVEN 5/5/77
"Here is a prime example of the saying ‘the whole is greater than the sum of the parts’ … It’s called synergy and the Dead wrote the book on it.”

BOSTON 5/7/77
“The music they laid down brought me places I had not been before.”

CORNELL 5/8/77
“...the single best rock performance anywhere, anytime, by anyone.”

“There was just some kind of magical connection this night between the band members and the band and the audience - some texture, or some type of cosmic or celestial force is in the room.”

"This show is, was, and always will be Mecca.”

BUFFALO 5/9/77
"...an awesome display of the Dead’s captivating power"

As I've said in this thread before PG Six solo joints are good!

The next PG six record on drag city is beautiful and sad, beware listeners if you’re feeling fragile. It’s got more harp than any of his other solo records I think; does not rock like starry mind did. It’s truly beautiful and I can’t wait for y’all to hear it.

ian, Tuesday, 14 March 2023 20:17 (three years ago)

What's it called? I can't find anything on Drag City about a new album. I just keep coming up on the Amish Records reissue of the debut.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 14 March 2023 20:21 (three years ago)

Called murmurs and whispers. Dunno when release will be, hoping this year? He played it for us (wife and I) when he visited a couple weekends ago.

ian, Tuesday, 14 March 2023 20:23 (three years ago)

Oh, got it! Thought maybe I missed something, definitely stoked to keep an eye out for this one. Thanks for the heads up!

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 14 March 2023 20:25 (three years ago)

Sorry, but trying to get anyone psyched before it’s time. I just played it again and so I thought to comment. It’s super. A lot of the songs he has been playing live for a long time but with different arrangements in most cases. I haven’t been this stoked about a new record in a while so pardon my gushing enthusiasm.

I was at this show and remember it fondly!

Sat close to the front, and when he asked if anyone had any requests, I said Quiet Fan For SK, and he replied awkwardly that it was improvised, which I knew, but thought it might be possible to play around with. Anyway, curious to see now that that track has over 1 million(!) plays on Spotify. About ten thousand for the other tracks. Curious if it was used in a tv show or something, or else just another one of those odd algorithm boosts?

(ㅇㅇ) (+ +), Friday, 12 May 2023 15:37 (three years ago)

The first two albums mean a lot to me, and are some of my favorites from this century. I like Starry Mind very much too.

(ㅇㅇ) (+ +), Friday, 12 May 2023 15:38 (three years ago)

"Quiet Fan For SK" is on the Dead Man's Shoes soundtrack. that could explain its relative Spotify popularity.

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Sunday, 14 May 2023 22:23 (three years ago)

no, wait. that was "The Fallen Leaves That Jewel the Ground." yeah, maybe an algorithm thing.
