Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Saturday, 13 November 2004 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn you Dr. Bill, you listmaking fiend, for leaving me with no choice but to do this.

I reserve the right to change my mind at any time, since I'm bound to forget loads of stuff.

I tried to choose singles as much as possible ... where I felt I needed to represent my fave albums, in some cases I opted to go with singles unless a particular album track *really* stood out for me.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 13 November 2004 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, I have two #27's! Oh well, top 101 it is.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 13 November 2004 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

That took two hours and now I'm freaking the fuck out ... I want to hear all this shit NOW. I'm starting with #31 and #29.

Damn, this was tricky because when it came to the artists who have made some of my favourite albums (e.g. SPZ, Orbital), I had trouble separating the tracks from the albums ... for instance, "Out There Somewhere" at #58 seems awfully low for the best track from my #2 album of the '90's. However, that track works better as the "In Sides" finale, rather than on its own. I suppose this shouldn't be surprising -- the necessity of hearing particular tracks in the context of their albums is just the hallmark of a great album, no? That's why it was far easier to pick singles, or standout tracks that I am accustomed to enjoying separate from their albums.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 13 November 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

38 Cornershop - "Brimful of Asha"
Meh, that doesn't need to be there ... left over from the 90's ballot ... replace with the godlike "6 AM Jullandar Shere".

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 13 November 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope this thread winds up like this one -- Screw albums: Post your highly subjective Top 100 Singles of All Time as of Right Now.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 13 November 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually like my list for that thread far more than this one. Plus it reminds me that I forgot Secret Shine's "Loveblind" on this list. Oh well.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 13 November 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Cannot even bear to think about compiling a top 100 but a couple of minutes' thought has lead me to decide that "California Love" by 2Pac and Dr. Dre is top of the tree.

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 13 November 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Well my 'short'list was still laying around, so it didn't take too long to order it - except if I'd been planning a top 100, I'd have had a shortlist twice as long, and this list might not have been the same. I note that Pulp are all over the top 40 (which I realise makes me racist in some people's eyes!), and to be honest they could have been just as prevalent all the way down, but once I'd shortlisted a bunch I stopped - and there are other acts who may have been a touch limited by this too (Massive Attack, Underworld, Wu). And I didn't bother shortlisting anything but major favourites in areas like country and soca and African music, as I didn't visualise much of that sort of thing getting on the nominations - similarly I might well have included more reggae, certainly one or two more by Culture. And I couldn't bear to chop ones out yet again (I really found nominating and voting painful, having so few choices), so you get a top 111, since that was what was there:

1. Pulp - "Common People"
2. Underworld - "Born Slippy NUXX"
3. Pulp - Pink Glove
4. Massive Attack - "Unfinished Sympathy"
5. TLC - "No Scrubs"

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 13 November 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand how "Justified and Ancient" really made this poll. The appeal of that seems so much more OMGWTFLOL(ROFFLE)-based to me than actually being one of the best songs of the decade.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 13 November 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I adored it - Tammy is one of my all-time favourite singers, and I think this was her last great performance (even if the KLF had to chop up and reposition her vocals all over the place), and I love self-mythologising in music, and they were the best at that since Mott. Add in a dazzling blend of pop, dance, soul and country, and it's an irresistible record.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 13 November 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The brightly coloured ice cream van on the single cover and in the video (not to mention the goofiness said video) gives it a kitsch/novelty factor that possibly detracts from the record.
My "issue" with J&A being on the list, if you want to call it an issue, is that the three other "White Room" singles all crush it handily (and J&A finished ahead of "Last Train to Transcentral" on the poll, didn't it?).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 13 November 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(the goofiness *of* said video ...)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 13 November 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

a few hours well spent... can't fault it

nick.K (nick.K), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Looking at that list practically makes me salivate.

"Intergalactic" and "La Femme D'Argent" top five, though, dunno about that.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 22 November 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Are we going to do top 100 albums next? :)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 22 November 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course. Soon as the regular poll ends.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 22 November 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

my 90s albums list would be shameful so i'm not doing one

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

oh come on.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, here we go. Notes:

-- I started with the top 30 that I carefully composed at the end of 1999 (most of which I still stand behind) and slotted in the stuff I've discovered or re-evaluated since then. Then I did the same for the next twenty albums or so, etc.

-- As with the singles list, once out of the top 40 or so, the rankings get less precise -- the general trend, of course, is decreasing favouritism as the list progresses. If I look at this list anymore my mind will explode from thoughts such as "WTF? How can that album possibly be all the way down at #72???".

-- Compilations ... there are several on the list... obviously all tracks had to be recorded in the 90's*. DJ mixes that were released in the 90's are exceptions (there was only one such exception anyhow).
Comps that I would normally disqualify my from year-end lists because not all the tracks were new from the year in question or previously unreleased (e.g. #88 or #59) were eligible here, since all their tracks were recorded in the 90's.

-- There are 101 albums here. Remain calm.

*one comp (#87) has a track from 1989 -- the lone exception

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm working on mine, probably done by the end of the night.

It's pretty boring, all things considered. I need to listen to more albums.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's like your singles list then it's not boring.

I'm reasonably happy with my top 100's. The albums list was easier to make since obviously the number of 90's tracks I've heard is greater than the number of albums I've heard. Also, the albums list is more a list of my favourite artists (who are relatively easy to identify), while the track list is more of a mixed bag. But both lists came out fairly representative of what I was listening to in the 90's.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Right, I think that holds true for me as well--the songs list I had to fight to get down to 100 (my shortlist had like 140 songs--cutting off the last ten or so was murder), but the albums last I could only find about 90 or so I definitely wanted to include. The last ten are only semi-favorites. And yeah, it's a much more predictable list.

Anyway:
