Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, The Fugs and The Edgar Broughton Band are truly wonderful. Also, The Flaming Lips, Fiery Furnaces and Super Furry Animals, whilst I understand why many people dislike them, are far too pop to have anyone thinking they should be in this category. What's difficult about them?

I don't really get the whole pretending to like something because it's trendy idea, but I'd say maybe LCD Soundsystem. I enjoyed Losing My Edge, but it's not amazing, and everything else I've heard is crap - hipsters, however, cling onto the idea that it's cool. Maybe.

emil.y (emil.y), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't heard anything by LSD Soundsystem (Freudian slip; I'm leaving it) except "Losing My Edge" which was kinda funny the first three or four times.

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and The Shaggs are great too, but they certainly couldn't be played at just any time, in any mood.

emil.y (emil.y), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

MORrissey. Just painful these days.

Pointer Sisters, a band people try to grit their teeth and pretend to like? (A call out to Dominique)

EXPLAIN!

Granted, I don't think they were the most outstanding female R&B group ever, but for The Pointer Sisters (1973), Steppin' (1975), and moments on Energy (1978), they should be highly commended and re-examined.

"How Long (Betcha Gotta Chick On The Side)" is one of the greatest R&B/funk jams ever... period. Serene, dynamic, perfect. (Daddino, I can dropload this bomb to ya for your CDRGO if you want.)

Ignoring the above, "He's So Shy" and "Automatic" are also great singles... (I'm a bit tired of "I'm So Excited" and "Jump" myself, and they've released a lot more to ignore since...granted, once again)

But Pointer Sisters being a band "people try to grit their teeth and pretend to like"? I don't think any record stores carry Pointer Sisters CDs anymore... where's the peer pressure cabal that I've been missing here?

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 13 November 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Re Yellow wristbands:

You just need to get a black wristband and join the Disco Nihilist Tobacco Farmer Relief Fund. With your purchase of a black wristband we will use 100% of the proceeds to buy cigarettes for kids in grades 6-8 to help get them started on a long career of pure pleasure. With Everybody crying about the cancer risks, no one is looking out for all the destitute farmers that have had their lives destroyed by the holier-than-thou anti-smoking crusaders.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Saturday, 13 November 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I popped into Other Music today just to kill a few minutes and they were playing something that LITERALLY made me grit my teeth -- it was honestly painful to listen to. I should've asked who it was that I may have included their illustrious name here.

Failing that, I'm going to cite Scout Niblett.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 13 November 2004 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

every time Scout Niblett is mentioned an angel loses it's wing. ooops.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Saturday, 13 November 2004 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Saturday, 13 November 2004 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

When were the Pointer Sisters "trendy", though?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 13 November 2004 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

...was it circa their camoes on the "Love Boat" when Isaac convinced them to give up their jobs as chamber maids and embrace music?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 13 November 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, come on, the Pointer Sisters have been all the rage recently over at the Pitchfork News room and The Wire board meetings! Shuh!

Pointer Sisters, a band people try to grit their teeth and pretend to like? (A call out to Dominique)

hahaha that was a joke! I thought this was a joke thread

Dominique, Thursday, 2 August 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

My Chemical Romance of course. I like a lot of their stuff, but I suspect that many people out there who write about music / play music have to do a lot of pretending.

Beyonce. Pointless. Yes, I know, ban humansuit.

humansuit, Thursday, 2 August 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

I can't stand Gene Loves Jezebel.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 2 August 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

Please, people -- on what distant planet are (or were ever) Gene Loves Jezebel trendy?

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 2 August 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

Ever time Scout Niblett's records are played, a jackalope is bludgeoned by a ball peen hammer wielding hobgobln.

Wow.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 2 August 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure many DJs hate Daddy Yankee as well, there's another one.

humansuit, Thursday, 2 August 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure many human beings with fully functioning ears hate Daddy Yankee. As well they should.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 2 August 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah but speaking to the particular audience that would be expected to pretend that Daddy Yankee is so worthy of being played all the fucking time when in your heart you want to puke. Or in your mouth.

humansuit, Thursday, 2 August 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

reggaeton in general.

Jordan Sargent, Thursday, 2 August 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

I know, man -- my neighborhood is full of these Puerto Rican hipsters acting like they like reggaeton, but if you looked on their iPods it'd be all Billy Bragg and Barry Manilow.

that's crazy cause all the white hipsters i know pretend to like billy bragg and barry manilow but if you look on their ipods its all yomo and don omar.

Jordan Sargent, Thursday, 2 August 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

various "extreme" metal groups.

rockapads, Thursday, 2 August 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

Mentioning SFA, Brian Wilson, Klaatu and Flaming Lips in the same thread as Modern Talking is a crime towards music.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

And you just did it in the same sentence!

Mark G, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

Since when are extreme metal groups trendy at all, except for about three months at the end of '06?

Bill Magill, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

and now your entire human existence has been invalidated thanks to something you absent-mindedly posted on the internet. i hope you don't ever try to run for office. xpost

Richard Wood Johnson, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

Geir also did it in the same line, which I believe is grounds for group spanking in many cultures.

humansuit, Thursday, 2 August 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

What a scary image.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 2 August 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

Spank humansuit.

The Reverend, Thursday, 2 August 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

We'll do a circlespank then but I'm not behind Geir.

humansuit, Thursday, 2 August 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

Yomo & Don Omar >>>>>>>>>>>> Billy Bragg & Barry Manilow

Puerto Ricans OTM.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

marmotwolof, Friday, 3 August 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)

This is totally putting words in his mouth, but I think when the dude says "extreme metal groups" he means bands like Mastodon, Isis, Pig Destroyer, etc. that somehow managed to break out of the pack and get lots of love from Pitchfork and other hipster venues, thus making them trendy for a time. And I can totally see how those bands might be somewhat hard to listen to for people who aren't normally into metal. But that's just my guess.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 3 August 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)
