Ultimatum Records

Are there any records (i.e. albums OR singles) that, if someone saw nothing in it to like, you couldn't be their friend (or lover)? I know this sounds harsh, and I'm not completely serious, but I was thinking about how sometimes it's the little things in a relationship that really count. A friend of mine said his girlfriend thought 'Spinal Tap' (the movie) had no redeeming qualities and was complete trash, and I thought to myself, if that were the case for me, I don't know if it would ever really work out. Anyway, goforit.

I'm not a rabid Beatles fan, but I have met a few pople who say that they don't like anything the Beatles have ever done. That's when I shut them off - They had a pretty wide spectrum of music -there's got to be something appealing.

And when someone within 5 years of my age tells me they've never heard of the VU or Iggy Pop or don't know anything by Neil Young - why go on?

Simpsons, too for that matter. When people tell me "I don't get the Simpsons" ... That's kind of a litmus test with me.

Relationship-wise, there's no real deal-breakers. I don't think I'd want to live with someone who hated chart pop unequivocally but the situation hasn't arisen. Almost everything you cant understand someone disliking or liking is balanced by something else you agree with them on.

As for friendship, it would depend if I thought we had anything much in common beyond liking music. I'm not going to hang out with somebody if all they want to talk about are the fucking VU, but then I'd be unlikely to hang out with them even if all they wanted to talk about were Daft Punk and Roxy Music. One of my best friends has absolutely shocking taste in music - real Dido and David Grey territory - and we get on fine.

To us music is such a big thing but to most people its fucking nothing. its so insignificant really.

Based on what you just said, Ronan, I'm afraid I don't think things are going to work out between us... ;-)

Opposite really. If you're both into the same stuff then how can you learn from each other? It seems almost like incest. Plus, being attracted to somebody because of their CD collection is pretty juvenile. (No offence to actual juveniles.)

One of my ex's couldn't eat cheese or really any dairy at all. That was interesting--though not unworkable. But one of my other ex's liked Enya--and was a conservatory student to boot! That did not go well.

Clarke, when I saw that heading, I thought you meant Ultimatum Records, the label--thank God I was mistaken!

Why, Mickey? What are they about?

Unlike what their name might suggest--they are neither a deathmetal nor a Christian music label. (Funny how one could be construed in such contradictory ways.) Instead, the lofty ephitet refers to a well- meaning, I suspect, label which has produced quite a lot of mediocrity, and the most frustrating thing is that I have no idea why any of these bands, for the most part, deserve a deal. It's kinda like seeing a bad indie film in which obviously alot of people had put energy--so depressing when you consider what else could have been done with the money. I mean, we all are pretty cynical when major labels pump out stuff that isn't great, but Ultimatum just pumps out bland bland music.... here's their roster:

Incredible Moses Leroy, who is not so much incredible as incredibly annoying, Dogstar - Keanu Reeves plays bass, J Mascis, who is most definitely the best thing on Ultimatum, Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, Sugarcult, and 6gig. The last two of which exemplify naming schemes which should have moratorium/(a?) placed on them.

Ronan's comment was interesting. I know some people for whom music is so incidental it would seem to be very difficult to get it together with them, even I were tempted. A friend of mine was out with his then girlfriend and who should walk by but David Bowie! My friend was suitably awestruck, while his partner appeared not to care less. There are many reasons why people stay together or otherwise, but that, apparently, was the beginning of the end.

But it works both ways. We may find ourselves offending them with our lack of knowledge of what they like. I know that such is her passion for food that my partner gets livid when I forget a particular dish we've eaten, let alone the name of the restaurant where we had it!

A bit of tact and respect...

It's really hard to imagine any music being a real deal-breaker, but now that I think about it, the Simpsons comment (which may have been a joke) might actually apply. The show colors my personality and worldview... of course, the friend would probably sicken of me first in this case. This worries me , so perhaps I'm exaggerating. I sure hope I'm exaggerating...
