I mean fairly well-known people...

Gretchen Franklin
Alan Minter
Terry Waite (kind of)
Rasputin (or at least his brother)
Shaun Ryder
Damo Suzuki
Queen Victoria (except it's a Kinks song)

Um, lots more probably.

Charles Dexter (Holey), Saturday, 13 November 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe that little gnomes reside in Fall songs.

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 13 November 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Ten times your age, one tenth your height, oh they are NOT ALRIGHT.

RickyT (RickyT), Saturday, 13 November 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't need the acid factories
I've got mushrooms in the fields
Julian* said "How was the gear?"
They don't sell things to you over there
A cigarette goes out when you put it down

Said to be Julian Cope, according to his biog anyway.

I've always assumed that "Muzoweri's Daughter" was a reference to Abel Muzorewa, Prime Minister of Zimbabwe in 1979 during its shift to independence. The timing re. Dragnet seems too close to be coincidental.

Also, Link Wray mentioned in "Neighbourhood Of Infinity" and Ted Rogers in "Joker Hysterical Face". Martin Bormann in "Haf Found Bormann". Loads of self-references to Mark E. himself ("Mark'll Sink Us" e.g.). Lou Reed in "Shoulderpads #1" and Pope John Paul I (Alberto Luciani) in "Hey! Luciani"

I've always assumed "John Quays" was just a joke play on Junkies, but I'd be interested to find out if he had a real life counterpart. I suppose some people might argue that Christ from the same song (also "Before The Moon Falls": "thank Christ") is a real person.

Glam-Racket is packed with Suede, Stephen King, and Shadrach (in vogue at the time; The Beastie Boys more famously name-dropped him).

salim (salim), Saturday, 13 November 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Winston Churchill had a speech impediment, and look what he did.

f ath, Saturday, 13 November 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian Curtis was supposedly mentioned in "Various Times" since they and Joy Division used the same rehearsal room.

"I don't like them," said Ian in his black-out threats...

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 13 November 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Disney (and Mickey, Pluto, Brer Rabbit, and Dopey), Big A&M Herb (Alpert), Ramones, Kraftwerk, George Orwell, Megas Jonsson, Peter Cook, Gary Bushell, Queen Victoria in Fall song proper (City Hobgoblins), Sam Chippendale, Moody Blues, Patrick Moore, M. Pike (?), Alan Minter, Kevin Ayers, the great god Pan, the Holy Ghost, Louis Armstrong, Shakin' Stevens, George Best, etc.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Saturday, 13 November 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

M.Pike might be Magnus Pike a scientist who appeared on British TV in the 70's/80's and boggled a lot through his glasses.

mzui (mzui), Saturday, 13 November 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"Put the radio on, get the magazine out
And read about the ‘Essence of Tong’

Checklist:
I never leave home without:
1 Sunglasses: I wear them all year around, and seem to need them more often, it’s a habit
2 Music: cassettes CDs
3 Palm Pilot: it’s my lifeline I think it’s my P.A.’s computer, she rules my diary and I download it
4 Mobile phone
5 Amex card; They made such a fuss about giving it to me but I spent more time getting it turned down.

I was in the realm of the essence of Tong."

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 14 November 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

doesn't he mention some sportwriter and soccer players in The Kicker Conspiracy...i'm not sure if they are real though....i've no knowledge of "football".....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 14 November 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

And you oversee a 'game' magazine. Out, OUT! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 November 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Marble Millichip" refers to Bert Millichip, former Chairman of the F.A. or holder of similar pointless pompous position. Think the other names are jokes.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 14 November 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Pat McGat, the very famous sports reporter?

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Sunday, 14 November 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

No, he doesn't exist AFAIK.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 14 November 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

George Best is not a joke

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 14 November 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

And you oversee a 'game' magazine. Out, OUT! ;-)

and as such it is my duty to avoid all things that require physical fitness!!!

What about that guy who was the basis for "God's Cop"? I think he's mentioned in a Fall song, some very Christian loony police officer in Manchester I think?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 14 November 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

and as such it is my duty to avoid all things that require physical fitness!!!

You will rot and die without having heard the Fall's 50th anniversary album if you're not careful.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 November 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

What about that guy who was the basis for "God's Cop"?

James Anderton, much loved "AIDS is a punishment from God" spouting Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police during the 80s, looked a bit like Brian Blessed. Apart from the Mondays and The Fall (I think you're right but I can't think what track they mention him in) he also gets name-checked in Lloyd Cole and the Commotions' "These Days".

Quite an achievement for a subhuman bigot with a comedy beard.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 14 November 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

And Jimmy Hill's Satanic reign (in Kicker Conspiracy)

Charles Dexter (Holey), Sunday, 14 November 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"It's only music, John" (Totale's Turns) was widely taken to refer to Mr Peel, bless him.

marco (marco), Sunday, 14 November 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Susan vs. The Youth Group is about Susan from Neighbours, the storyline a while ago when she got (hotel) amnesia.

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 15 November 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Cary Grant! And, IIRC, Buster Keaton was at his wedding!

Dr Benway (dr benway), Monday, 15 November 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Buster Keaton never took Hallucinogens (unlike Cary Grant, who took lots)

Charles Dexter (Holey), Monday, 15 November 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Joe Strummer and Jake Burns in (ta-da) "Cary Grant's Wedding"

Ol' Dirty Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Warren Mitchell in the Live At Acklam Hall version of "Pay Your Rates" - "working class traitor"

Ol' Dirty Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian Curtis was supposedly mentioned in "Various Times" since they and Joy Division used the same rehearsal room.

It's actually Ian McCulloch who is mentioned in "Various Times", him and Julian Cope were MES's biggest groupies at the time

Ol' Dirty Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

>Pope John Paul I (Alberto Luciani) in "Hey! Luciani"

Thanks, never knew that. A friend always sings it as "Hey! Giuliani."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Re: "Mark'll Sink Us", could this have owt to do with Mark Sinker? I'm sure MES was aware of the pun at the very least.

Ol' Dirty Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)
