a question for people who aren't djs, but sometimes listen to music as if they were

of what consists:

1) your current imaginary playlist

2) your imaginary audience demographic

let me answer 2) before 1). there's a dj collective thing here that's kind of our answer to (what i imagine is the scene in) williamsburg, ie. lots of dfa stuff, some electroclash hangovers, daft punk, maybe a streets track if yr lucky. but it's pretty antiseptically white, so zero rap (except very occassionally in bootleg/mashup form), no dancehall etc. i think i could successfully pander to the hipsters while introducing some dancehall/booty-ish bass /crunk lite/straight up huge electro-house into the mix.
not in actual order of play:

1) teddybears shtlm - cobrastyle
2) kelis - trick me (tiefschwarz mix)
3) this track from 'favela on blast' that's killing me
4) ada - maps
5) the knife - heartbeats (rex the dog mix, obv)
6) cassius feat ghostface - thrilla
7) 2raumwohnung - spiel mit (alter ego mix)
8) diplo riddim ft vybz kartel
9) ludacris - roll out (dylan remix)
10) federation - hyphy
11) dizzee - stand up tall
12) archigram - padre

Mitch's list is fantastic and kind of mirrors mine in a few ways. Anyway, right now I'd go for:

Seenluft - Manila (Ewan Pearson mix)
Alter Ego - Rocker
Vitalic - Candy
Mylo - Drop The Pressure (Erol Alkan edit)
Depeche Mode - Photographic (Rex The Dog mix)
Tiefschwarz - Ghosttrack (Black Strobe mix)
Black Strobe - The Abewehr Disco
Rex The Dog - Frequency
Orbital - You Lot
Hystereo - Winters In The City
Junior Jack - Stupiddisco
Ada - Maps

My ideal demographic would be my friends, mostly off their tits.

(also one more general question: i often get my greatest pleasure out of music when i imagine listening to/playing it in a social setting, though this is actually a pretty rare occurance for me. and since i've never been a clubber proper or gone to a 'rave qua rave', it can't be pegged down to the lasting aftereffects of an ex-lifestyle. i'm wondering how many other people feel this way (i imagine those who most closely mirror my listening approach actually do or did participate in some dance 'scene' at one time, but maybe i'm wrong).

you can handle a few zings, what with infinite glory that your ears are about to behold when your download completes (i assume you've queued it up)

I just downloaded the remix by 'Rex The Dog'.

I find it a little repetitive and mechanical, but I suppose that is the point?

Mitch, I liked it when you said 'antiseptically white'.

Surely playlists are not imaginary but rather, by definition, suggestions of events past or present?

haha that was beautiful, mark.

the cassius grew on me over the period of about a year. there's a (curious) streets remix of the track, btw.
