I really hope this isn't true.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 14 November 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That was posted yesterday. I would think the rest of the media would have picked it up by now. (This may just be my way of hoping this ain't true.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 14 November 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't believe it. i've heard that he's dead/ is dying from aids at least a half-dozen times before.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 14 November 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmn. Yeah it looks like you are right. All the other news items are in sequence.

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 14 November 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

In October of 2000, the rapper was almost finished a stint in rehab when he made a run for it, spending a month as a fugitive, during which time he performed at the Hammerstein Ballroom in front of hundreds of stunned fans.
Whoa, that was four years ago already? Making a surprise appearance on stage, walking off, and becoming a fugitive again before he could be found or caught = coolest thing ever.

MTV has a brief story up:

Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard died on Saturday (November 13) in New York, according to his spokesperson.

Sources close to ODB said he had been complaining of chest pains earlier in the day. No further details are available as of yet.

I'm consistently amazed by this kind of silly hyperbole on ILM at the news of a death.

It's sad, but... come on.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 14 November 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Just not right.

I only found out last night when I flipped to MTV Base, who were doing an hour of awesome tracks on which he'd rapped, with an RIP note under their logo. Shed a couple tears. It took me the whole hour to find out the circumstances as Base were scrolling notes about his life on the screen during each song. Totally gutted, that's both 'Coldblooded' singers gone this year (Chappelle connection indeed). I can honestly say that Dirty was one of my musical heroes without any reservations, hesitations or caveats. I put Nigga Please on before going to sleep but had to switch it off eventually. Rest in peace, Dirt Dog.

Popmatters.com's ODBituary.

I read earlier that lawyers have worked out that he's got seven kids: three by his wife and four others from 'out-of-wedlock relationships'.

How many of his famous aliases did he actually record under?

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

From that 10 Reasons ODB was Cool piece:

"While we wouldn't recommend than anyone haphazardly spread their seed (and Jones did have his fair share of legal trouble over failure to pay child support), he should at least be given props for recognizing his paternity. In 1994, Dirty famously loaded his brood into a limo and made his way to the welfare office to collect food stamps — all while being tailed by an MTV camera crew."

Maybe I'm an old fogey, but I don't consider these actions cool.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't like that piece much.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 November 2004 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is that from? The tag says it's a Wu-Tang B-side/unreleased cd, so is it a B-Side, or is it unreleased? Anyway, it's fantastic - I might play it this weekend, depending on many factors.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

As I understand it, this track is from an R+B tribute album for Phil COllins.
I shit you not.

'NEW' OL' DIRTY BASTARD ALBUM ON THE WAY

The first posthumous OL’ DIRTY BASTARD album will be released in January.

But fans need not worry that Tupac-style vultures are already descending on the late rapper’s estate. The mixtape ‘Osirus’ was completed a month ago and always intended as New Year release.

The mix features 14 exclusive new tracks with a galaxy of producers including DJ Premier, The Heatmakers, Dame Grease, Chops and K-Def.

Human beatbox Rahzel from The Roots – currently working with former Faith No More mainman Mike Patton – also guests alongside Inspektah Deck, Killer Mike and Baby Sham.

‘Osirus’ will be released in the US on December 21, and in the UK on January 25. The UK version will, however, feature bonus track ‘Move Back’.

The tracklisting is:

* ’Rahzel Intro’
* ’Pop Shots’ (Wu Tang)
* ’Go Go Go’
* ’Fuck Y’All’
* ’Out Of Control’
* ’Stand Up’
* ’Run Dirty Run’
* ’Who Can Make It Happen Like Dirt?’
* ’High In The Clouds’
* ’Fire’
* ’Pussy Keep Calling’
* ’Down South’ feat Killer Mike
* ’Untitled’
* ’Caked Up’ feat Baby Sham
* ’If Y’All Want War’ feat Ghostface and Royal Flush
* Rahzel Skit

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 21 November 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
I guess this should be mentioned:

An autopsy of rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard reveals his death by heart attack was due to "intoxication by the combined effects of cocaine and [the painkiller] Tramadol," according to Grace Burgess, a spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner's office.
Born Russell Jones, O.D.B. died on November 13th after collapsing suddenly in a New York recording studio just days short of his thirty-sixth birthday.

The wild card of the nine-man Wu-Tang Clan, at the time of his death, O.D.B. had completed a two-year prison sentence for a drug possesion and had been working towards his fourth solo album and Roc-A-Fella Records debut. Osirus, an album recorded during the rapper's last six months, will be released January 4th on JC Records, a label recently formed by his mother Cherry Jones and manager Jarred Weisfeld. A reality TV show, Stuck On Dirty, which wrapped filming in the weeks before O.D.B.'s death, will debut on Spike TV in early 2005.

O.D.B. is survived by mother, his wife and a reported thirteen children.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 21 December 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

That record was really awful. This new one is more like his first solo album, the two highlights of the album for me are clearly going for a "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" sort of thing.
