Without A N Y doubt it had to be the debut from Franz Ferdinand. I would really wanted to vote for an electro album but it's unbelievable how THEY rock!!! Yeah baby, yeah!!!!

Panagiotis Pileidis (Panagiotis Pileidis), Monday, 15 November 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

alliterative names will always be suspect, won't hey?

(I vote Nellie McKay)

miccio (miccio), Monday, 15 November 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

won't they?

miccio (miccio), Monday, 15 November 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

superpitcher - here comes love

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 15 November 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Madvilliany maybe.

Secret Machines

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 November 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going for "Goodbye" by the Czars this week, as I couldn't pass a CD player without putting it on this weekend.

Braces Tower, Monday, 15 November 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

another vote for Nellie McKay here.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

comes down to scorn vs mia/diplo for me.

:| (....), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Junior Boys or Madvillain.

The Good DR. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

FF are possibly the most overhyped band of 2004...there's a band like this every year: very instantly-gratifying but ultimately void of longevity...It was Hot Hot Heat last year, though they are quite better than FF

Best albums this year is either Animal Collective - Sung Tongs or Madvillain - Madvillainy

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone else dissapointed by "Here Comes Love"? - I've been trying to let it sink in but I can't lose the feeling that nothing on it comes close to "Heroin" or "Tomorrow"

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

very instantly-gratifying

except FF aren't even this.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

So far none of these is even in my provisional end-of-year Top 50!

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 15 November 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Mara Carlyle - "The Lovely"

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

so far its liars - annie is on my list today, though.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Mara Carlyle is great.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 15 November 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

big & rich by about five miles.

chuck, Monday, 15 November 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Dizzee vs Streets vs Go! Team vs Fiery Furnaces four way fite at the moment. I don't think there's a single one of these I unconditionally LOVE, mind.

Are we likely to be seeing the Roll Deep album before the end of the year? Unlikely, isn't it...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

This one of those "there are a lot of really good albums, but NO wow okay that's my #1 record years". But there sure are a lot of very good albums.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

no roll deep till 2005. 'aim high vol2' mix is out at the end of the month, wiley is gonna put out a self-released album early next year.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, now it seems as though annie might have eclipsed the liars album.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, as A Grand Don't Come for Free is the album of the 21st century, and it was released this year...

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 15 November 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Arcade Fire or Futureheads, I can't decide.

cdwill, Monday, 15 November 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Anniemal in terms of Things That Have Come Out Already but it's a pretty safe bet that in two weeks time Girls Aloud and Gwen will be scrapping it out for first place.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Pinback, Summer in Abbadon

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Streets and Kanye have swapped back and forth as my favourite of the year, and now the Go! Team may bump them both out of the top spot.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I have bought like two new records this year, would I like any of these? Please tell me

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye or Big and Rich or Jon langford

I like Franz Ferdinand pretty well. It might make my top 40

chris herrington (chris herrington), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to say "Smile" but no, it's gotta be "Real Gone" by mr Waits.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

This one of those "there are a lot of really good albums, but NO wow okay that's my #1 record years". But there sure are a lot of very good albums.

Fuck my original answer, I'm in this boat. I want to put some southern hip-hop at number one just because my focus has been overwhelmingly on that shit this year but I can't say that there's been one album that has really held it down for me. Maybe Trick Daddy or David Banner or Trillville/Scrappy, but I donno.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

talking of southern hip-hop wasn't Trina supposed to release an album this year? Her website says she has but I can't find any other evidence of it.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard T.I.'s album is going to be coming out at the end of the month. Can someone confirm?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ghostface. Devin. Ratatat. McKay. Dizzee. And a BIG vote for the Katamari Damacy soundtrack!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

hey djdee - trick daddy will probably wind up making my top 10; i like banner and scrappy/trillville as well, but not nearly as much. what about lil wayne, though? he might make my top 10, too. (as might *favela booty beats*, but that's too far south to be south, i guess. the federation would probably be in my top 20, but they merely *sound* like they're from the south, being from california and all.)

chuck, Monday, 15 November 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - don't understand what was so polarizing about 'here comes love'.
superpitcher always was poppy.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yeah that Katamari Damacy has some wigged out music...good stuff!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Fave albums are Joanna Newsom - Annie - Stina Nordenstam

Fave compilations are M.A.N.D.Y's Get Physical Mix and Le Monde Electronique by Francois De Roubaix

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Federation's album is pretty great, Chuck you need to assign someone to do a piece on the bay area-dirty south connection for the VV, its a subject no one's really done much research on that I've found. There's defintiely a connection what with E-40 and Too Short being influential in the south and Master P used to be making music in the bay area etc.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Also the Lil Wayne album IS very good, I don't know if its top 20 for me right now though. You are right about how great Trick Daddy is though.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

" you need to assign someone to do a piece on the bay area-dirty south connection for the VV, its a subject no one's really done much research on"

does this count?

http://villagevoice.com/issues/0443/chang.php

chuck, Monday, 15 November 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

(probably only counts slightly, i know. but it's a real good federation review, and i haven't heard anybody else talk about that album!)

chuck, Monday, 15 November 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha, Trick Daddy was on Howard Stern two weeks ago as a celebrity on 'Hollyweird Squares,' sitting next to Daniel Carver and Wendy the Retard.

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

John Cale - Hobosapiens is up there. . .

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Monday, 15 November 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

first half of 2004: Nellie McKay!
second half: TOM WAITS

bill neil (inabillity), Monday, 15 November 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

SMiLE. By a looooooooong shot.

Hey Alex in NYC, is the new Secret Machines much different from than their debut? I've only heard "Nowhere Again" (which I love), but I had sort of a lukewarm reaction to the first album.

darin (darin), Monday, 15 November 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Mara Carlyle is great.

-- mrjosh (jrothma...), November 15th, 2004.

Nice to know there's another person who actually KNOWS about her in this board. What other records have you enjoyed this year?

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Monday, 15 November 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The Nick Cave double album -- my ears are fascinated

Je4nne Ć’ury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 15 November 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It's been growing on me slowly, but Dizzee is my current favorite.

(x-post - Yeah Jeanne, it's really good isn't it. I'd been reasonably comfortable with my gf's Nick Cave obsession, but the new one is the first that I'm going to burn for myself.)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 15 November 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

(probably only counts slightly, i know. but it's a real good federation review, and i haven't heard anybody else talk about that album!)

Its a start!!!

The Streets edge out Animal Collective for me.

Magic City (ano ano), Monday, 15 November 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

this week it's the stina nordenstam album. last week it was the AMC album. who knows about next week.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 15 November 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably either Blood Brothers or the first Devendra album at this point.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 15 November 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The Franz Ferdinand does it for me. Mind you, I haven't heard most of the albums mentioned here.

And while the hype slam on FF is to be expected I have read more than a few opinions of people that either didn't buy into or bristled against the hype until they saw them play live. And nobody can make an assessment on longevity based on one album. Maybe just a flash, maybe not. We'll see. Their newer stuff sounds good.

gspm (gspm), Monday, 15 November 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

billstevejim, Monday, 15 November 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"This one of those "there are a lot of really good albums, but NO wow okay that's my #1 record years". But there sure are a lot of very good albums."

OTM. It's the best year for dance mixes that I can remember though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The best album of 2004 was supposed to have been released in 1967.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

arcade fire

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Lil Wayne and Teena Marie are both up there for me. Its been a slooow year, but then since I got back into school (mid-aug) and for various reasons prior (since juneish) I've been too busy to really stay up on everything. Mission Of Burma still holds it down for me on the rock front. The Christina Milan is alright but not consistent enough for me, and same with the R. Kelly. Usher?

The T.I should be hot though, judging from the single. The T.I. vs. Flip mixtape is probably my best mix for the year. The reggaeton/latino rap thing is one to watch for too -- the mixtapes have been coming solid, but we still need an album to put it together (the N.O.R.E. single is a good start, but the beat is sorta meh..)

Unrelated, but is the new Fabolous just killing the old stuff, or what?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

SMiLE is my favorite as well. I feelk dirty about it, because, as someone points out, seems like the second best record of '67 shouldn;t win in 2004.

Otherwise, it's been a suprisingly strong year for the indies, with Elliott Smith, Neko, Waits, Tegan and Sara, DBT and TV on the Radio all releasing records that have a good shot of making my top 10.

Have yet to hear Dizzee or Streets ... but gotta believe one of those will win the Pazz & Jop, judging by the enthusiasm here.

Also, Lil' Flip proves the connection of the DS to the Bay ... he's a wittier version of Too $hort. The N.O. guys, too, strongly evoke the Bay -- have done so for years and years.

Chris O., Tuesday, 16 November 2004 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't LOVE the new T.I. single, it is good though. Mostly I just think T.I. is like the best rapper out of ATL right now.

New Fabolous is head and shoulders better than old.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

no dubstep here? maybe i'm just so late to the game that horsepower and monolake both sound incredibly relevent. anyway, someone clue me in the right direction since there's no jess to harass my ignorant ass.

i'd say bruno pronsato's silver cities is the biggest grower still at this point, but morgan geist's unclassics really has stuck.

youngn (ndeyoung), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

and djdee, you really need to make a folder of some of that your top hiphop singles from shrimp. i swear, i've completely dropped out of any hip-hop for the last couple months and it's taking it's toll on my music.

youngn (ndeyoung), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

From: Katie
Date: Mar 11, 2004 08:49 PM
Subject: Franz Ferdinand!! (soo rockin!)
Body:

Ok, so my good friend turned me onto this new band Franz Ferdinand. And may I say... freakin' AWESOME!! It has been so long since I heard songs sooo good and sooo rockin' that I have to blast it and actually jump around and dance and shake my booty! Seriously, this band rocks, and I mean that cool old fashioned funk edgey raw type of rock, with the catchiest hooks, but pure music all the way thru. An album that will make your head bop and foot tap involuntarily, for sure. Everyone should run out and buy it NOW!! You will NOT be dissappointed!
