Dizzee Rascal on Band Aid III's Feed The World - C or D?

i remember reading a while back that he doesnt see himself as part of the grime scene anymore (that might just him heading towards martyrdom though) and that he's competing with the craig davids and lemars as far as 'urban pop stars', i didnt think he was THAT serious about it though. i suppose its a tricky issue, seeing as its a charity record, and im not saying he shouldnt help out or anything but musically, im thinking this is a mess.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 15 November 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

does this mean DTKIC will FINALLY, as logic begged, have a little rap on it?

but at what cost?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 15 November 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

This actually gives me something to be positive about, with regards to DYKIC.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 15 November 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

That should be DTKIC. Of course you know it's Christmas, you've got clean water.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 15 November 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

DO You Know It's Contaminated?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 15 November 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not saying it's not a musical mess, but Dizzee still being part of the grime scene is not mutually exclusive with Dizzee being on the Band Aid single! All it means is that he's had big hits, which is a great thing.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

That isn't exactly an accident (that he doesn't see himself as part of the grime scene). Anyone close to it will tell you that he's a smart kid and he has smart people around him, and all have made certain that a separation from a dead-end is *exactly* what he's doing.

Now that has nothing to do with participation in the Band Aid thing, which is of course probably pretty disasterous aesthetically (but not that big a deal in the long run).

Wiley's Dead, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss Craig David.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Dizzee can do what he likes.

Band Aid is still shit though.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Band Aid 20 - Who sings what

Chris Martin (Coldplay) - It's Christmas time, there's no need to be
afraid. At Christmas time, we let in light and we banish shade

Dido - And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of joy. Throw
your arms around the world at Christmas time.

Robbie Williams - But say a prayer, Pray for the other ones. At
Christmas time it's hard, but when you're having fun.

Sugababes - There's a world outside your window, and it's a world of
dread and fear.

Fran Healy (Travis) - Where the only water flowing

Fran Healy and the Sugababes - Is the bitter sting of tears

Fran Healy and Justin Hawkins (The Darkness) - And the Christmas bells
that ring there are the clanging chimes of doom

Bono - Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you

Will Young and Jamelia - And there won't be snow in Africa this
Christmas time

Ms Dynamite and Beverly Knight - (Oooh) Where nothing ever grows, no
rain nor rivers flow

Group of 10 and Joss Stone - Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

Tom Chaplin (Keane) - Here's to you

Justin Hawkins - Raise a glass for everyone

Dizzee Rascal - Spare a thought this yuletide for the deprived, if the table was turned would you survive

Busted - Here's to them

Justin Hawkins - Underneath that burning sun

Dizzee Rascal - You ain't gotta feel guilt just selfless, give a little help to the helpless

Joss Stone and Justin Hawkins - Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

Tom Chaplin - Feed the world

Tom Chaplin and Chris Martin - Feed the world

Tom Chaplin, Chris Martin and Sugababes - Feed the world

Everyone - Feed the world, let them know it's Christmas time again
(repeated)

Fran Healy - Wooo

Group of 10 - Feed the world

Everyone - Feed the world (repeated to end)

Joss Stone - Ad-libs over outro

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet that Justin Hawkins invests his lines with the gravitas they deserve.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Bono - Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you

Wait, he just sings the line again? HAW HAW. Justin's moment of glory snuffed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah - the BBC quotes him as saying how he hates the line, but somehow he won the battle anyway.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that's 3 minutes of my life I'll never get back. Makes the SAW version sound like gy!be fronted by the four tenors. A more lumpen arrangement featuring third-rate club singers you could not imagine. Dizzee sounds like a Radio 4 parody of 'da yoof'.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Who sings "The greatest gift they'll get this year is life"? It seems to be missing from the above transcript. Otherwise, top work, Alba!

I'm sure I saw Neil Hannon in one of the publicity pics. I must say I was surprised at the time, but it seems I just got it wrong.

Dizzee's bits look like they'll sound *awful*.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Jaysus, the Edge!

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

who remembers the post-sept 11th cover of "Whats Going On"? It was awesome! "HUMANS USING HUMANS FOR A BOMB!" - Fred Durst.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never read the lyrics to DTKIC before. Complete shit.

Busted - Here's to them

Justin Hawkins - Underneath that burning sun

I thought the raps were the best part of the "What's Going" re-make. You're feeling me, right? (right)

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It wasn't my work (pasted from BBC) and it turned out that someone had posted to them another thread first anyway. I haven't heard it yet, but for some reason I couldn't sleep last night wanting to. But not enough to set the alarm early.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Fran Healy - Wooo

DJ Mencap0))), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds like community workshop music

coco, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

who remembers the post-sept 11th cover of "Whats Going On"?

how did this do in the US charts? i'm not sure it got released in the UK (thank thuck)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

dizze's bit is THE ONLY DECENT BIT, the rest is an ill-conceived mess, mainly due to the lack of pace, or even a decent beat, and the adlibbing nonsense at the end...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

shockah

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Fran Healy - Wooo

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The post-9/11 What's Going On got to #6 over here. The original version wasn't a hit.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the only decent bit, but it sounds horribly shoe-horned in.

I can't decide whether the worst bit is Dido's spectacularly unsympathetic voice; Bono's painfully self-conscious revision to his line; the fact I can just tell Joss Stone is grunting away with her eyes closed to prove that she means it man, or the way Justin Hawkins pronounces 'glass'.

coco, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going to see if i can actually NEVER hear this record. it will be an exciting Likely Lads-esque challenge of doom.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, why did all the members of both The Thrills and Snow Patrol turn up? With McCartney lobbed in, that's at least three bass players. Soundsystem!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a lost opportunity for a massive and unexplained fire in the studio, that's what it is

coco, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"Fried Damon, love..."

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

dizzees bits sound awful and embrassing. like he was drafted in cos they needed someone repping 'the youth' or 'the street' or something. but i cant see it gelling over time, hes a RAPPER, theyre SINGERS. its gonna sound stupid.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i can imagine this being worse then nelly and nas on that remake of whats going on last year.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Joss Stone - Ad-libs over outro"

May be the most depressing sentence I've ever read.

jim (jim5et), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard it this morning. Dizzee's bit was so embarrassing my toes curled back on themselves and have refused to unlock since.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i can imagine it being worse than the song 'imagine' on his album in terms of lyrical corniness.

yeah, the fact joss stone isnt singing a pre written line but is making HER OWN up is terrible. that means cod-fake-shit-soul singing warbling and melisma attacks ahoy.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I would gladly give away all my worldly possessions and my bank account details if it meant i never had to listen to it even once, rather than spend a few quid on buying the actual record.

Neil FC (Neil FC), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Help the motherfuckin' aged"

Jarvis predicted this not once but twice didn't he? Once on Da Ali G Show, and once in the absolutely fantastic "Bad Cover Version" video. Hmmm.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

That "Bad Cover Version" video is a phenomenal video. So many highlights - the pisstake of Jamiroqui must surely rank as one of the greatest things ever.

Neil FC (Neil FC), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"Fran Healy and Sugababes" nearly made me giggle out loud. The transcript is both funny and sad. Saw the rehearsal on BBC News 24 and just groaned, especially when they showed Joss asking her older companion for Bob Geldof's name as she talked to the cameras outside the studio. And then when the voiceover talked of "Britain's biggest popstars", they cut to Katie Melua, who I did not recognise at all.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

you're outa touch!

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

no, Joss and the Busted boys not having heard of Geldof was definitely one of the redeeminmg factors! There is no reason why they should have.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

She thought his name was Gandalf!

mms (mms), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh good lord, that would be a vision.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Bob is a nice guy and Joss has no redeeming factors, hence groanage.

Ned, I'm torn - would you and Dan be Gollum or Gandalf and Saruman?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Gandalf? They're about the same age.

Barima you are nuts, Joss is awesome despite her faults, and Geldof is vile, I mean did you not see or hear about that awful 'family values' programme he did?!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i like it in the new Joss Stone song where she suggests that maybe, at one point, she MIGHT'VE been cool with taking some cocaine!

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Fran Healy - Wooo

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

If Joss Stone moved away from the trad production that even Jools Holland's Rhythm'n'Blues Orchestra would shy away from and teamed up with a decent modern R'n'B production team she would be pretty good.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The fact that she's even vaguely OK while having that production is quite impressive.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

the production on 'You Had Me' seems as good as anything from the last Alicia Keys album - i assume that was the aim

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

If Joss Stone moved away from the trad production that even Jools Holland's Rhythm'n'Blues Orchestra would shy away from and teamed up with a decent modern R'n'B production team she would be pretty good.

Like that guy from The Roots!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm suddenly in love with Joss Stone.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

(for the Gandalf thing, not the ad-libbed outro, which I have yet to hear)

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Fran Healy - Wooo

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, I'm torn - would you and Dan be Gollum or Gandalf and Saruman?

I think we agreed on the Gollum/Smeagol split elsewhere. Mind you, the wizard route has its advantages.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

fucking hell i just heard this. dizzee is a TOTAL embarassment and sounds utterly out of place (not to mention, just fucking stupid). the darkness' guitar parts are funny though.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

What about The Thrills' guitar parts?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

didnt hear those. but the darkness' parts sound just like their usual Queen-ish selves. the thrills parts were probably so twee i missed them.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish they just re-released the original of this.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Fran Healy - Wooo

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The chorus vocals to 'You Had Me' (especially) made me want to replace the blood in my veins with nine pints of burning molten lava.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's funny how obviously they allocated the lines.

Chris Martin (Coldplay) - It's Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid. At Christmas time, we let in light and we banish shade

Coldplay - bit profound, great for all that clever light and shade imagery.

Dido - And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of joy. Throw your arms around the world at Christmas time.

Dido - cuddly and nice, evocative of hugging.

Robbie Williams - But say a prayer, Pray for the other ones. At
Christmas time it's hard, but when you're having fun.

Robbie - Everyman spiritual leader, as evinced by popularity of funeral anthem 'Angels'.

Sugababes - There's a world outside your window, and it's a world of dread and fear.

Sugababes - err.. black member, some black people have dreads?

Fran Healy (Travis) - Where the only water flowing

Fran Healy - bit of a hippy, in touch with nature, showed senstivity to river imagery with his touching childhood memoir 'Driftwood'. Slightly undone by solipsistic approach to sub-Saharan drought, though.

Fran Healy and the Sugababes - Is the bitter sting of tears

Teenage girls will always break your heart.

Fran Healy and Justin Hawkins (The Darkness) - And the Christmas bells that ring there are the clanging chimes of doom

The Darkness sung about bells last year. No one else has a clue. Fran kept on for the doom angle.

Bono - Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you

He might not want to sing it, but the pro bono publica demand it.

That's enough.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

the pro bono publica demand it

I am now suddenly aligned completely with Nicole regarding your general worth.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

That doesn't explain Fran Healy - Wooo though.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

No, keep going. Fran Healy - Woo. There is significance, surely?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must go Wooo.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom Chaplin (Keane) - Here's to you

Acknowledge me, dammit!

Dizzee Rascal - You ain't gotta feel guilt just selfless, give a little help to the helpless

I'll never do another PSA jingle again.

Justin Hawkins - Underneath that burning sun

Would getting a fake tan make me black? The dilemma...

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I want a Eurodisco band aid, with the bloke from Aqua going "come on Barbie lets save Mali" in place of the Dizzee lines.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

You brilliant bastard.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"Touch my emergency aid package, this is life"

I have now heard Band Aid 20 - albeit on a tinny clock radio, so Macca-free - and I declare it to be...not nearly as awful as I feared. Dizzee gets away with his bit, even if it sounds really self-consciously shoehorned in, and really, it's a very strong song that has stood up to the last 20 years of seasonal airwave bludgeoning.

I do think it's a shame none of the (purportedly) "quality" songwriters onvolved couldn't come up with a new song, but there you go. The Darkness guitar bits fit remarkably well!
