The current odds for Christmas Number One are:

Band Aid 20 – 1/8 from 1/5.
Ronan Keating and Cat Stevens – 10/1
'The X Factor' winner – 16/1
The Undertones – 25/1
Ricky Gervais and Noel Gallagher – 25/1
Kylie Minogue – 25/1
Madonna - 25/1
Paul Holt – 25/1
Westlife – 25/1
Girls Aloud – 25/1
Bar – 33/1

Right, so allowing for the Band Aid thing to still be number one (most prob) , ignore.

The Ricky/Noel song is not being issued.
The Undertones one is unlikely to be reissued. (I would have thought).
Ronan/Cat? You have got to be joking. Number 20? (I have heared it!)
Rowetta? (Oops, sorry, the X factor winner) will it be ready in time?
Bar (after splitting up with Otway and ret?) who knows...

do you win anything if you get a christmas number one? like a fruitcake or something? A year's supply of figgy pudding?

Ol Dirty Bastard 'Shame On An Elf'

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

what about William Shatner's "Common People"? it was doing well in the download charts recently and may still have sufficient momentum to do well in the UK singles sales chart

Anyone else noticed the deluge of "Mad World" clones appearing? Some A&R guys somewhere need slow-clapping.

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still hoping Midge Ure's attempted comeback will bomb.

Silly Brits. Acting like people actually buy singles anymore.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

As long as Woolworth's exists, Brits will buy singles.

Eminem should release 'Like Toy Soldiers' for Xmas

Pikmin, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure he will.

Ah, betting people. 'tones and Gervais have already both declared they won't be releasing, and the X Factor winner is being held over to be the first post-Xmas number one. Girls Aloud are going to be deposed by Band Aid in a couple of weeks, Westlife's last two singles were download only...

This is basically "let's pretend it won't be Band Aid", isn't it? No-one's gonna want to be the grinch that steals Christmas from Joss Stone ad-libbing over the outro.

And also, Fran Healy: Woooo

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Band Aid will need to stay at number one for four weeks to manage it though... how long did the other Band Aids remain at #1? I'm guessing the majority of sales are all going to come in the first week, so I'd be happy to lay against Band Aid III (or "Scheduled guest list for next series of the Frank Skinner Show) still being there come Dec25.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Five and three weeks respectively, though they both had the post-Xmas shortfall factored into that.

But still, this record is not going to be bested by Ronan Keating or Nadia off Big Brother.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Keating was the pre-Band Aid III favourite, he's going to be there or thereabouts. The sensible bet is e/w on Ronan, if he's not #1 he could well be #2.

what the Nadia from Big Brother single is actually happening? what in the name of god will it sound like?!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know. I don't want to know. Annoyingly, I'm eventually going to find out.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

And Avid Merrion is also doing another single too.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, you must really regret doing the Top 40 threads at this very most wonderful time of year

What do you expect it to sound like?

Yes, it sounds exactly like that. Lame eurobeat with a poor quality 'singer' over the top. She speaks one of her "I must have cigarettes" catchphrases over the outro. Expect it to be a big hit, for the same reasons as "Just Lose It" was (Pavlovian reaction to celebrity with little in the way of quality filtering applied)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It was on that B4 Channel 4 video prog this morning.

For lame eurobeat, substitute lame Ricky Martin style beat.

Actually, Will Young has secured the number one spot for Band Aid in advance, very cunningly indeed:

Ronan Keating and Cat Stevens – 10/1

Please tell me this is a joke..

I think I'm rooting for Kylie.
