Has the RIAA finally begun a crackdown on SLSK? (Not a hoax)

Several times today, when attempting to DL stuff on SLSK i have immediately received this message, each time from a different user:
"Please try browsing me if you get 'File not shared' errors. This is an automatic message, you don't have to reply to it."
Is this a new thing lots of slskers or doing or is there some way that by browsing a user's hard drive they can scour yours (even the parts you aren't sharing)?

the horror. the horror.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 15 November 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm...havent had this happen yet. This just happened today?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 15 November 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

This message is nothing new.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 15 November 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone keep quiet and duck. maybe they haven't heard us.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 15 November 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The message means exactly what it says. Just browse the person's shared directory and click to download from there instead of the search box.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 15 November 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

If they were able to scan parts of your hardrive you weren't sharing, I'm pretty sure they can't do anything to you since you'd have to be SHARING music to be comitting a crime.

jaykid, i dont want my camel pr0n found.
roxy, yes.
I understand the message spencer, I'm just wary that it's worded the exact same way by multiple users, all of whom have great DL speeds.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Monday, 15 November 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I've gotten this message from people since I started using slsk in 2002. I wouldn't worry abt it.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, it is a default slsk message that is generated by the program, not the users.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

this does remind me that I need to reconfigure my shares though and get any RIAA stuff out of there just to be safe

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

this is only generated by people using nicotine or pysoulseek. no worries.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

hooray for unfounded fears.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

*panic*

please, Monday, 15 November 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we change the title to (this is a hoax)?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

but it wasn't a hoax. more like:
Has the RIAA finally begun a crackdown on SLSK? (Nevermind)

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't put your real name and contact details in your user information.

don't share the RIAA shit. simple

Erm... but isn't 99.9% of all the shit on SoulSeek connected to the RIAA?

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i highly doubt that.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think RIAA gives a shit whether or not I am sharing microhouse 12"s, Favela funk, the new MIA mix and old jungle tracks.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder. They picked on people sharing a lot of stuff, full stop. I guess once that they've established that what you're sharing is copyrighted, it doesn't really matter if it's on labels close to the RIAA's heart or not - their aim is just to make an example of people.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

How do you find out what is and isn't RIAA?

Like, is the Jim Jones album RIAA?

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Just upload everything you've got and the RIAA will sort it out for you.
