NY POST still has the dirt:

November 16, 2004 -- Pandemonium broke out during the taping of Vibe magazine's award show last night, when a man was stabbed during the ceremony, sending stars fleeing from the mayhem in their limos.
The violence broke out as rapper Dr. Dre rose to accept the Vibe Legend Award from presenters Quincy Jones and Snoop Dogg, a witness at the Santa Monica event told The Post.

An unidentified man sitting with Death Row Records chief Marion "Suge" Knight lunged toward Dr. Dre with a knife — but members of rapper 50 Cent's entourage intervened, the witness said.

It is unclear who was stabbed. MTV reported that he might be a member of the rap group G-Unit's entourage.

The victim was in stable condition, police said last night. The stabbing occurred roughly one hour into the planned two-hour award show, which resumed after a 40-minute delay.

Many of the scheduled performers, including Alicia Keys, had already left. It is unclear how the incident will effect UPN's broadcast of the show tonight.

Knight and Dr. Dre feuded a decade ago about the direction of Death Row, a label founded by Knight that launched the careers of rappers like Snoop Dogg and the late Tupac Shakur, who was murdered in a rap feud.

Knight has been in and out of jail since 1997, most recently getting hit with a 10-month sentence last year for parole violation.

"All I know is that someone from Suge's table ran forward to get to Dre, but a bunch of people from 50 Cent's table blocked him," said the witness.

"Whoever was stabbed was not a celebrity."

The witness said that the production, co-hosted by supermodel Tyra Banks and rapper L.L. Cool J — was immediately shut down and celebrities were spirited out of the ceremonies, being held at Santa Monica Airport's Barker Hanger.

"It was pure panic," the witness said. "I never saw anything like it. Those cars were flying out of here. Russell Simmons ran out of here crying."

Another witness told MTV that Knight had run onto the stage, screaming obscenities at the audience of about 1,000. Several people in the crowd were pepper-sprayed, the network reported.

Banks and L.L. Cool J returned after the delay to finish the show. The model urged the crowd to "have more love in the room" and to "respect one another," the witness said.

The after-party at a nearby hotel was canceled.

One Person Stabbed at Vibe Awards Taping

By The Associated Press

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - One person was stabbed and several were involved in a chaotic fight that broke out at the second annual Vibe awards as rapper Snoop Dogg and producer Quincy Jones were preparing to honor Dr. Dre with a lifetime achievement award.

Dozens of people sitting near the stage Monday inside a hangar at the Santa Monica Municipal Airport began shoving each other as the show wound down about 7:30 p.m., a photographer who covered the event for The Associated Press said.

News video showed chairs thrown, punches flying, people chasing each another and some being restrained.

"To my understanding ... the show was going on when the stabbing occurred," said police Lt. Frank Fabrega in a news conference after the fight.

It was unclear if the stabbing preceded or followed the fight. The victim, a 26-year-old man, was taken to a hospital and was listed in stable condition.

Police were looking for the assailant and no arrests have been made.

Witness Frank Williams told KCAL-TV that Dr. Dre was involved in the brawl.

"I saw Dr. Dre fighting somebody," Williams said. "I don't know if he was fighting back. But there was a guy taken out basically bloodied."

Andrea Ferguson, employed by a public relations firm that worked with Vibe for the awards ceremony, called the incident a "disruption" but declined to provide details. She added the show was allowed to continue but it was halted for about five minutes.

Dr. Dre, who was scheduled to receive a Vibe Legend Award for his lifetime contributions to hip-hop, had not come on stage yet when the fight erupted. Jones and Snoop Dogg stood on stage without saying anything.

About 1,000 people attended the event, some of whom scurried for the exits when the fight broke out.

"It's really important that we don't take a negative incident like this and do away with the awards," Suge Knight told reporters.

The show was taped Monday and was expected to be broadcast Tuesday. R&B singer Usher led the awards with five nominations, followed by Alicia Keys, who has four nominations.

Vibe magazine focuses on urban culture and entertainment. The awards are voted on by music journalists and "regional tastemakers."

the signing of Petey Pablo is so wierd...wtf is Petey thinking?? It's like jesus Crooked I's record has been delayed for like 4 years and Petey's been on non-stop rotation in the last year between Freak a Leek and Goodies....so um how exactly is signing w/Death Row going to help your career?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

how does Suge even have money to run a label anymore? The royalties for Doggystyle and the Chronic can't be that much anymore (definitely not enough to float a major label), and with the cops cracking down on him he can't possibly have that much illegal revenue coming in... and it's not like everyone in the hip-hop community is ignorant of his totally insane and incompetent track record...

CALIFORNIA: POLICE ACCUSE RAPPER IN STABBING AT AWARDS The police accused an up-and-coming rap musician, Young Buck, of stabbing a man who they said punched the rap producer Dr. Dre at a music awards ceremony on Monday night in Santa Monica. The police said that a warrant was being prepared and that they were seeking Young Buck, left, whose real name is David Darnell Brown. A video of the event, the police said, appeared to show Mr. Brown attacking the victim, Jimmy James Johnson, 26, who was being shielded by security guards. Mr. Johnson suffered a collapsed lung and is in stable condition, the police said. Young Buck's albums are distributed by the same label as Dr. Dre's, Interscope Records. Jeff Leeds (NYT)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

SANTA MONICA, CA, Nov 16, 2004, -— The Santa Monica Police Department issued a warrant for the arrest of G-Unit rapper Young Buck on Tuesday (November 16) in connection with the melee at Monday’s Vibe Awards.
After reviewing a videotape of the fight, investigators believe Buck (born David Darnell Brown) stabbed 26-year-old Los Angeles native Jimmy James Johnson after Johnson assaulted Dr. Dre during the ceremony at the Santa Monica Municipal Airport hangar.
Buck, who will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon, was one of three men seen on the videotape with knives. The other two have not been identified.
“Mr. Brown is seen lunging over another male and swinging the knife at Mr. Johnson’s upper body while Johnson is looking away from him,” Santa Monica Police Department spokesperson J.T. Butts Jr. said at a press conference Tuesday (November 16). “He is clearly depicted holding the knife after the assault and was a number of fight participants sprayed by pepper spray. Brown then fled the scene and was not identified until earlier this morning. … We are asking Mr. Brown to surrender himself to the Santa Monica Police Department immediately.”
The encounter began around 7:25 p.m., when Johnson approached Dr. Dre for an autograph and began punching him several times.
“As private security persons attempted to control Mr. Johnson, several males attempted to assault him,” Butts said. “Two uniformed officers attempted to intervene and they themselves became victims when unidentified men threw chairs at them.”
James was stabbed in the chest and suffered a collapsed lung. He was rushed to a local hospital and is in stable condition, Butts said.
James, who is on parole, has not yet been interviewed, nor has Dr. Dre. “We have a call in to him, he has not responded, but we will interview him at his earliest convenience,” Butts said. “This investigation is continuing and we are in the process of identifying several other assault suspects. We have a lot of people to interview.”
Butts said he has no idea what sparked the assault and made no connection between Johnson and Suge Knight, a longtime Dre rival who attended the awards.
Initially only two officers intervened, but Butts said 56 officers were on the scene within minutes, including more than 30 who were patrolling the Vibe Awards. Metal detectors were used at the doors, Butts said.
Young Buck has several arrests in Nashville on his record for minor offenses, Butts said. A spokesperson for the G-Unit had no comment.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, when that "Shorty Want a Ride" video came on the other day, I laughed out loud about wannabe-bad Young Buck. Nobody tell him, okay?

I only caught the wierd, dispirited end of the Vibe show -- can anybody who saw the whole thing tell me how the editing worked out? Was any of the fight shown? Did Dre get his statuette?

And WTF - ALICIA KEYS won artist of the year??? Kanye's gotta love that.

briania (briania), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

well, it seemed as though the always hilarious Tommy Davidson took over emcee duties after Banks and LL fled in their limos. I guess they returned to finish up in completely anti-climactic form.
