a lost classic, maybe?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Definitely. It's gorgeous, and totally stood out for me as the best song on Hope and Adams. Sadly, I didn't think the follow-up, "...per second, per second" really had anything as good as this song. Nor did it stand up to Hope and Adams at all.

it's just a paul westerberg song, basically

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait, it's also on per second . . .

Either way, I prefer the hope and adams version.

The band appears to prefer the per second version:

What’s the mystery behind the remake of the beautiful hidden track, “Don’t I Hold You”?

“When we did that song on Hope and Adams, that was the poppiest number on that record, and the one that came the closest to being the song we imagined. In the interim, when we played it live, we picked up the tempo and popness of it, and brought it to the forefront more than it had been. We always thought, ‘wouldn’t it be great to give it a second shot?’

The president of Aware loved the song and suggested they do it, he says. “We kind of didn’t want to do a song already on Hope and Adams. Fans already had it and it felt like a cheesy move, you know? So, a hidden track was a way to have it there and not have it there. And I love the new version. We all do. Sonically, it’s the prettiest song on Per Second. It sounds so goddamn good. So warm and beautiful.”

I love the original version to bits. H&A is brilliant. And 'Body Talk (Part 2)' gives me goosebumps.

I just heard 'per second..' for the first time last night, although I fell asleep part way through (too late and too much red wine). I liked what I heard so far...

i loved medieros and hope and adams, and per second's got some absolute belters on it, but i wish they'd go less down the crowded house road. it all seems to be getting too polished for my lugs.

OTM - too much production was my first thought. yeah, OK, fridmann was pretty slick too (there are parts of H&A where i feel like i'm in the studio with them) but the new one sounds a little too matchbox 20 for my liking

Great Band who I know nothing about which is rare for a sad obsessive like me.

Evrybody I've played them to likes them too.

I think Hope and Adams and Medeiros are at least 7/10 each. Didn't even know about the other one.

Is Medeiros/Medieros an ode to Glenn of same surname?

one year passes...
such a beautiful song

One of my favourite songs, though i'm not sure the second version was ever necessary. The first time i heard 'Per Second...' i was really disappointed, i honestly began to wonder if this was the same band who made 'Hope & Adams'. Still has some good stuff on it, like "I Met A Girl".

Any news on album #4?

I've liked every Wheat album except the most recent one, but Medeiros is still the best.
