sing along sessions

When I was in Brazil I was constantly amazed at how well people know the lyrics to seemingly every song. Even foreign language songs are sung along to, even if the person didn't know that language! At parties, it was common for an acoustic guitar to come out and someone would strum and everyone, but everyone, would sing along. I thought it was lovely. It was not uncommon for me to be asked for a contribution in English. I was usually totally stumped. We just don't seem to have this tradition here. I once tried Nowhere Fast by The Smiths, with lousy results! I tried Bizarre Love Triangle, but I didn't know all the words. My Brazilian hosts were, like, How can you NOT know the lyrics? Anyway, my question is, what do you sing when uninhibited people ask you for a contribution in such circumstances? Do you manage to remember all the words? How do feel about singalongs?

I played Big Balls by AC/DC in the Will Oldham style in the summer when we were in Prague on the street. people looked at us funny and tourists gave us money.

i`m a bit of a miserable sod in that i hate sing-alongs. the songs chosen are invariably the really obvious ones(among my mates anyway), y`know "wonderful tonight", various beatles tunes, "wonderwall"...ok so everyone knows the lyrics but still its BORING. personally i`m crap with lyrics only managing to recall the most random ones. i once did the wham rap for a bit of a comedy moment, and despite not having heard it since the age of 9 i knew it off pat, yet when i tried to do the "state i`m in" which i`d listened to countless times i was left fumbling for the words.

i too hate singalongs.... I remember when i was younger, school disco type affairs.. and everyone would be singing along to some shit like the 'Timewarp' and i'd just be standing there with my arms crossed like some kind of moody bouncer... "when are they gonna play some human league?" i used to think...........

At a recent party, a friend and I, being guitarists, started a sing- along. At one point, someone requested Nirvana, and a lot of people thought it was pretty funny that I knew so many of their songs. Not impressed-funny, but kitschy-funny, which I thought was strange. At least no one requested Stone Temple Pilots. I've been known to do a mean rendition of "Plush"...

one year passes...
Ronan is The Dandy Warhols. Nelly posts! And there's hate for "Time Warp", which is just wrong...ILM was a very odd place back in 2001.
