Utada Hikaru

i know she's mentioned on several J-Pop threads but i'm listening to the 'Exodus' album properly at last now and it's a bit bonkers/skewed ala The Knife's 'Deep Cuts' if you ask me

what would a Rough Guide To Utada feature?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

By Your Side is the only thing by her I've heard and it's swoonsome R&B, utterly gorgeous. It's a duet with Kiley Dean, incidentally.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

voice-wise she reminds me of the female vocalists in Bugs, Locust, and Pooka (tho the only thing i heard them do is still just that one Orbital track) - and someone else i just can't place (it's driving me mad!)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Devil Inside has that gothy guitar that's just killing me!

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

By far the best track on that album is "Let Me Give You My Love"

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i think 'Devil Inside', 'The Workout', 'You Make Me Want To Be A Man' and 'Wonder Bout' (Timbaland?) are better. can't decide on 'Easy Breezy' - her voice is too shrill and annoying at times but other times v nice - like Evanescence's Amy Lee in that respect

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a big fan of Automatic. I first got to know it as one of the songs on the Gameboy Color edition of Beatmania 2, where it was a lovely tune, but came out all bleeps and gurgles. And then one day I was having lunch in the Tokyo Diner and they played the original and it was BEAUTIFUL.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

don't forget "Tippy Toe" - terrific hook. i also like "easy breezy" a whole lot in spite of the cringe-worthy lyric, which i guess is a pretty good summation of the whole album - the other track timbaland did ("exodus '04) is also great.

as for her voice, i hear a good bit of late-period madonna in there as well, though sometimes she goes for the histrionic-pop-diva Christina Aguilera-like approach.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite track of hers is the swoony "Tokyo Nights." It was never a single, for shame.

How do people read the (quoting from memory here) "this is how people from the Far East rock" line from "Workout"? "Far East" is such a quaintly un-P.C. term: is its usage ironic or just plan awkward?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i think 'Workout' is halfway to Big & Rich so don't take it too seriously ;)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"Kremlin Dusk" is the best song on the new album. The rest just sounds like Western chart music. I wouldn't even call the ablum J-pop.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the album lots and lots but, yeah, it isn't very "eastern" sounding or whatever. Some of the lyrics are a bit double-take-unexpected which I like, I don't know if the pidjin-englishness is all wink wink intentional or not but I find it a bit neat and funny (which is very condescending of me I expect). Is Kremlin Dusk really a Mars Volta production?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

jae (jazzler), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i was too lazy to take Exodus out of my cd player for about a month and ended up really liking it a lot.

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i went off it quite a bit, but if i could get an instrumental of 'The Workout' that'd be awesome

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

To my ears, what's great about Utada is that her music reflects where she grew up (New York City) without trying to sound especially American. Or Japanese. There's no studied mellisma, no overt gospel or soul references, and no attempt to sound like something other than who she is. And, as befits a studio brat, her production instincts are first-rate.

Exodus is in many ways darker and more sexual than her Japanese albums. Of those, the closest in overall feel would be Deep River, which includes "Travelling," one of my favorite singles. First Love is more conventionally pop, but quite precocious (she was all of 16 when she wrote it.) And if you're really curious as to how she found her legs musically, try to track down a copy of Cubic U, which consists of demo-type stuff cut before First Love.

I love the video to "Keep Trying" despite its cornballishness.

Woah just had an immediate flashback to playing Kingdom Hearts as a teen and like, weeping while hearing Simple and Clean. Definitely going to investigate her other music.

very avant-garde (Variablearea), Friday, 29 May 2020 15:10 (six years ago)

my recommendation is start with Deep River, which is her best album and has the Japanese version of "Simple and Clean" as the closing track

ufo, Friday, 29 May 2020 15:13 (six years ago)

cool, listening to Exodus atm but I’ll give Deep River a listen.

very avant-garde (Variablearea), Friday, 29 May 2020 15:31 (six years ago)

My introduction to her were the killer R&B jams on Distance, her previous album.

There are also the two volumes of the Utada Hikaru SINGLES COLLECTION, released in 2004 and 2010 respectively. You could try those to see what period/style of Hikki’s speaks to you most, and take it from there.

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Friday, 29 May 2020 15:59 (six years ago)

what period/style of Hikki’s *before her hiatus*, that is.

oh yes, that new song is wonderful!

“Time”, the song she dropped earlier this year, is good too:

not quite as transcendent as "darenimo iwanai" but still really lovely

hope she has a new album in the works that's going to have all these recent loose singles on it

ufo, Thursday, 25 March 2021 06:26 (five years ago)

this is from a new EP, but it’s the only new track on it: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Last_Kiss_(EP).
it also contains older songs that Hikki made for the Rebuild of Evangelion film series.

Blick, Bils & Blinky • Let's Skip The Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Thursday, 25 March 2021 11:17 (five years ago)

her previous evangelion themes made it to albums too, which is why i'm expecting "one last kiss" will be on a new album too, i'm just hoping it will appear sooner rather than later. the majority of her singles since 2007 or so have been tie-ins for various films/tv shows/commercials/video games and then later collected onto albums.

it's sure weird to see a.g. cook's name attached to evangelion though

album's out today and it's pretty good, only issue is "face my fears" is rather out of place. floating points is a great pairing for her on the three tracks he co-produced and all the other old singles are still excellent, especially "darenimo iwanai"

ufo, Wednesday, 19 January 2022 06:47 (four years ago)

"not in the mood" is kinda astounding

ufo, Wednesday, 19 January 2022 07:10 (four years ago)

誰にも言わない, the track after "Not in the Mood", jumps out on first listen.

Netflix has an hour long live sessions. Guess it's been out for a month, but just watched it yesterday. Low-key in-studio grooving, worth catching.
