How good is this song, seriously? I don't even know that I've heard anything else from All for You, but maybe I should. Maybe we all should.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 17:25 (twenty years ago)

great song

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Edit! Rock mix!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I misread this thread's title as the god's honest truth that it is:

JANET JACKSON DOES NOT REALLY MATTER!

`Nuff said!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:16 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was

Janet, It Doesn't Really Matter

and should have been

Janet, It Was Really Nothing

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:20 (twenty years ago)

:(

But Alex, it's a great song (from a fairly recent album that doesn't get a lot of props, as far as I know), have you heard it?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:24 (twenty years ago)

The single that preceded it, (from memory) "Everytime", I think deserves more praise, as DRM was quite a big hit that got quite a lot of love from ILM-type people. I distinctly remember an early FT focus group really liking it.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm halfway tempted to go buy All for You and Invincible after work (and then maybe mix out all the ballads from both to create a killer single disc).

Not from me it didn't. But then again - I've always hated Janet Jackson and I've never heard anything in her music worth defending. Her voice is a meatless, fluffy whisper. Yuck.

So, that said, you should probably ignore what I have to say on the subject.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:43 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard anything in her music worth defending

y'know, I'll take that back, as I like the Sly Stone sample in "Rhythm Nation".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:44 (twenty years ago)

haha "meatless"

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Yuck. Hate that song.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Yuck.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Okay, okay, I get the point.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 19:22 (twenty years ago)

The... hell? How did the second post get into the thread ahead of the first one (which I assumed failed to get in, hence the second post).

Contra Edward I'm not a huge fan of "Everytime", although it certainly sounds a lot better to me than it did back in '97 when I thought it was just a knock-off of "Again". Now it sounds disturbingly similar to Britney's "Everytime"! Though not as good. As I've said elsewhere the *really* pivotal Janet ballad is "Empty", one of the most beautiful and forward-thinking songs from 1997. I love "One In A Million" to absolute death and I know it came first, but this is the *real* archetypal R&B-jungle lovesong. I wish there were more tracks like it.

"Empty", "Doesn't Really Matter" and "Someone To Call My Lover" form some sort of brilliant intergalactic trilogy charting R&B's rapprochement with idyllictronica (copyright Simon Reynolds), I love them all to death.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 01:15 (twenty years ago)

There is some good stoff on the "All For You" album. However, that first single is not among the good stuff. It is way too staccato, way too similar to the R&B crap dominating way too much of the current charts.

The title track is better, with its classic early 80s beat replacing the contemporary R&B sounds.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Unsurprisingly, I love the staccato modernist production of 'DRM'.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Her voice is a meatless, fluffy whisper. Yuck.

Back in my college days I made demos for an aspiring songstress who was utterly consumed by Janet Jackson. We're talking posters- t-shirts-double-vinyl-Japanese-import-remix-collections-obsessed, and while I thought it was kind of an endearingly goofy part of who this girl was, I couldn't help but think "Why idolize Janet? She's a marginal talent at best, and she would have gotten absolutely nowhere without Jam & Lewis' hitmaking bunker behind her."

The sad part was that this girl could really sing, but insisted on doing this schticky Janet imitation that's only become worse over time - I've heard her self-released CDs over the years, and they're increasingly unlistenable.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Is this on the same album as "Someone to Call My Lover"? 'Cause I really like that one.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:30 (twenty years ago)

AMG says yes.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:33 (twenty years ago)

'When I Think Of You' is on the radio right now. It's a lot better than 'DRM', but that's still a decent Janet single.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:35 (twenty years ago)

my favourite Janet single remains 'If'

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:37 (twenty years ago)

I love 'If'.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Janet singles that don't get their deserved props:

"You Want This"
"Go Deep"
"Son Of A Gun"
"All Nite (Don't Stop)"
"Got 'Til It's Gone"
"The Pleasure Principle"
"Come Back To Me"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Well, don't get their deserved props from people other than you and I, Dan (and the various 'All Nite' fans).

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:11 (twenty years ago)

(Hahaha I am having a gigantic flashback to Tim's "Dan lists a bunch of songs that share trait X" post from the ORbital/Underworld thread)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, I love this song. Isn't it a Jam & Lewis production? Maybe I'm wrong on that, but the staccato arrangement holds together because the melody is slammin. The jerkiness kinda kills the dancefloor quotient, unfortunately. All For You is great as well.

pheNAM (pheNAM), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:52 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

SO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD

Surmounter, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

Why did I hate this?

The Reverend, Thursday, 2 August 2007 05:23 (seventeen years ago)

i have no idea, ur crazy?

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 13:54 (seventeen years ago)

Last week, I just got the strongest desire to listen to Janet Jackson. Like, out of nowhere. So now I'm looking for her albums.

Anyway, I really loved this song when it first came out.

Ivan, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

the urge for janet is stronger than most urges i know

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

she really sinks in like a drug. i'm not quite sure what it is.

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

i think it's a textural thing, the smoothness of her voice atop all the synths.

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

I used to be obsessed with that part in "If" where that arcade game sample comes in. I think it's from an arcade game. I'd listen to that over and over.

Ivan, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:36 (seventeen years ago)

yes. If in general.
