Jimi gives us:

"This is a song by Mr. Bob Dylan, that's his grandmother over there."

"Yeah, I know I've skipped a verse, just wait a minute I'll get back to it"

Jonathan Richman gives us:

"You know, we've got a lot of hard work to do (today?)"

"We're not going to start this next song until we're in precise Modern Lovers order."

Please build your case with an example or two, if you have one.

You can also talk about who makes better guitar solo faces, if you like.

I've always liked when Jonathan, having stated his case in the first two or three verses, implores the Modern Lovers to confirm FOR SURE that he's telling the truth.

"I asked the Modern Lovers what they thought and they said.."
"I asked Leroy and Asa and D. Sharp and they said..."
"Modern Lovers, tell 'em all about it".
Jonathan:"Don't you love her too" Modern Lovers "Yes we do"
Jonathan: "Then tell her she's okay". MLs: "You're okay, you're okay"
etc.

etc.

Or before the guitar solo in Abdul and Cleopatra:

"Tell them, Leroy"

My very favorite Jonathan asides are on the (still unreleased) Modern Lovers studio version of "Fly Into the Mystery": Just before the first chorus he mutters under his breath, "I love Boston." Then after the line "I wanna drive out in the car past Beverley," he adds, "It's so pretty." All of which sounds much cooler and perfecter than it scans in print.

This is Jonathan's greatest moment, surely? Also the live version of "Ice Cream Man" where he won't let the song end is genius.

Yeah, although this is kind of a dumb thread, I have to say that I give it to Jojo. Vocal asides and adlibs have been so much part of his act that he is something of a master. They are rarely pointless, too, always pushing the music forward, or filling in a bit more of the story.

Jimbo:

"The monk bought lunch... yeah he bought a little"
"Remember when we were in Africa?"

et al

Once I saw Jonathan perform for some kids. He did an excellent cover of "Le Freak," just to hear him say "Ah, Freak Out!" in that voice of his was good enough for me, but later on he topped it when did "Sex Machine" (he sounded great on guitar) and at one point he said "All right now, our drummer's name is Tommy and we're going to ask Tommy a question, we're going to ask Tommy a question. Tommy, can you take it to the bridge, can you take us to the bridge?"

That's great! How about when goes into a version of "Night Fever" in the middle of "Give Paris a Second Chance"?
Also: search full-length intro to "Dodge Veg-O-Matic"

oh, i love him. at one show, a friend kept screaming "I'M STRAIGHT!" in the hope that he would break with the no original modern lovers thing and play it (this was quite a while ago). the last time she yelled it, he said, "that's not really my problem."
