TS: H.N.A.S. vs. N.W.W.

I'm listening to Nurse with Wound "Spiral Insana" and comparing it to Hirsche Nicht Aufs Sofa "Im Schatten Der Möhre." HNAS gets tagged as being NWW-copycats alot but I think they might actually surpass NWW in this case. Am I crazy?

the thing about Nurse with Wound that turns me off is when they try to be intentionally dark/scary. that settles it then, i'm getting rid of this cd.

this could also be the H.N.A.S. - c/d, s/d thread as well I suppose since there doesn't seem to be one.

they get compared frequently, which is unfortunate. Stapleton produced Melchior and put it out on united dairies, and that's enough to freeze the opinions of certain critics.

The five CD reissue program got a two paragraph review in the Wire from Haynes that basically said 'not as good as NWW, except for Melchior'. Haynes worships even the lesser NWW albums, but judging an entire seperate band against NWW because they collaborated once... impartial, unfair, sloppy thinking.

I hear HNAS much more as an 80's cassette-culture Faust, with the freeform instrumental collages given equal weight to the full fledged mutant concise pop songs. The abstract sections frequently culminate or explode into these catchy little numbers, unlike NWW; the few 'songs' on his albums are much more carefully delinated.

Some HNAS stuff is very spotty, I'm not too big on Melchior myself. But Im Schatten Der Möhre is really good, and the pop numbers at the end of Musik Für Schuhgeschäfte -- unbelievable.

There are two reissues of Im Schatten Der Möhre, one on Streamline, the other on DOM. You want the one on DOM, with the cover image of the carrot off-center -- it's got an extra 20 minutes.

I've been hoping to pick up copies of the other reissued CD's used, but that may have been a mistake. They were limited, and the people who bought them aren't selling...

i agree with the Faust comparison, which probably explains why I like that record so much. and I do have the Streamline one. wtf? there is plenty of room left for extra 20 min, so why did they leave that off of that version?

the Streamline was reissued by Heeman, the DOM by Achim. I suspect Heeman just wanted a straight archival release. (I have the Streamline one too, was bummed by the DOM reissue later but didn't re-buy it)

Heeman & NWW are a bit more easily compared, as Heeman solo either sticks to unfolding soundscapes or violent cutups. Aftersolstice is a five star example of the former, the Magnetic Tape Splicing 12" the latter.

eight years pass...

man I love H.N.A.S. so much, never saw this thread before. never saw the Wire review referred to, but Melchior is def the worst and the only orig LP I sold off. all the CD reissues alluded to above are killer, with tons of bonus tracks that cover everything you could possibly want (comp tracks, singles, unreleased). Some still seem to be around for sale!

I miss this band and wish the members could get along well enough to do some reissues

poor Hirsche Nicht Aufs Sofa, they only get a thread shared with NWW

I'm more of an Achim fan tbh! but I dig Christoph's work as well

that "Ach, Dieser Bart" LP is a perfect example of a band that had tensions and resorted to giving one side to each member, of course I vastly prefer the Achim side

plus I'm pretty sure Achim did the weird pop stuff on Music For Shoeshops, but hey I could be wrong

the Andreas Martin records are all great too! there is a 10" on Robot, compiled on 2CD with a bunch of other solo Heemann/HNAS stuff
