Documentary about african-americans who're into/creating rock music and the problems it can create. Anyone seen this?
Someone in the forum said: "NO one thinks it's weird for a Chinese to be a Rocker, A Raver, A Mod,a Hip-Hopper etc.. or whatever, but being Black you are pigeonhole the most. That's it."
So true. The same goes for whites, obviously.

Festival yesterday was a good time, very see and be seen crowd. Loads of beautiful people interspersed with a lot of middle aged white guys. I have little illusions as to which category I fit in. Yesterday was Le1f, Rye Rye, Mykki Blanco.Today is The Coup, Living Colour, Prince Paul, Chuck D, Death, Big Freedia, Danny Brown, ?uesto.

day 2 notably better than day 1trash talk was the most aggro pit I've ever seen; at the end, the lead singer incited the crowd to demolish the fire lane barricadewatched security knock a few idiots on their ass but surprisingly mellow. lotta bloody noses and road rash faces/arms/legs from the asphalt

the 23rd lineup is lenny kravitz, kele, thundercat, raury, jesse boykins... it's like they did a girls day and a boys day. The 22nd is gonna sell out in a minute, i dunno about the 23rd.in any case, they're hard ticketing at $40 a head this year; the festival's been out of control for two years. Curious how this plays out.

$40 to see Lauryn Hill, Kelis and Grace Jones is a fucking steal imo

This mix wasn't planned as "an Afropunk mix," but I'd say by virtue of many of the artists represented having been part of Afropunk festivals in the past/present, it's at least Afropunk in spirit. Really exciting music. Hope you'll dig it:

First video by them:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yC91GYRqwH0
- http://pan-african-music.com/en/new-video-tshegue-muanapoto
Shot in Abidjan, capital city of The Ivory Coast, the striking new video harnesses the primal energy of ‘Muanapoto’s kinetic drumming loops, beneath the no-f*cks-given attitude of French-Congolese frontwoman Faty Sy Savanet’s rhymes, to articulate a story which is actually about silence and isolation. Speaking about the film, which tracks a profoundly deaf and mute young girl negotiating her way out of a world devoid of sound, Argentinian directors Pantera say; “From the moment we first heard ‘Muanapoto’ we knew we wanted to make something that did justice to its insane rhythm and trance feeling. ‘Muanapoto’ speaks for African immigrants in Europe who upon arrival are forced to deal with the unknown, surrounded by new customs, foreign languages, different food and climate, all of which can lead to feelings of alienation. Muanapoto also feels like a release, a letting go, and that translates to the girl in our video, who feels the need to express something and is able to do so through dance and her body.”
