'member karaoke-style recording studios in most malls and amusement parks in the late 80s? (weird cover mp3 inside)

i recently unearthed a cassette containing a fun/scary cover of Jump (Van Halen) from about 1988, recorded in a mall in Binghamton, NY, in 1988. back then, it seemed like these cheapo karaoke recording studios were everywhere. we paid about 9 bucks for the privilege of making this masterpiece. now it's been digitized for all the internets to enjoy! does anyone else remember recording something at one of these places? i think they did videos too. you could wear 'rock star' wigs and ummm... everything.

These are pure gold. I had a tape somewhere of my ex-girlfriend and two of her friends doing 'End of the Road', it was just great.

good thread timing. i was actually wondering just 2, 3 days ago whatever happened to these things. it would get eatin' up. cash cow. etc.

chrizby, that's fah-great.. I tried to get some coworkers to do one once, but they chose "Lean on Me" and wanted to sing it all melodically - with 12 people .. it was a bust. Must find that tape.

hmm. that video thing sounds like that shit that tours college campuses during the first week of school. Video Starz, or some such. where the school entertainment committee gets all this stuff on campus (carrot top, magicians, inflatable suit wrestling, etc.) to show freshmen how fun and whacky Student Life is.

Damn, I used to have a karaoke machine. I wish I still had the tapes.

Wow - that's almost Klaus Beyer-ish.

Heh, Klaus Beyer - I just saw an excerpt from a documentary about him last week.

Didn't Mary J. Blige actually get discovered by circulating a tape she recorded at one of those kiosks of Chaka's "Sweet Thing"?

I have an absolutely devastating tape of a large group of several 8th grade friends spreading the "Stop the Violence" message with a virtually avant garde take on "Self Destruction" recorded at King's Dominion in Doswell, Virginia in the early summer of 1989. The Ms. Melodie and KRS-One verses are particularly gripping, as they quickly devolve into a collection of potent "weiner" rhymes.
