Compilation Compiling Question

many of you know that plain parade is approaching its second year of booking awesome fun time goodness, and this saturday we're throwing a party to celebrate the occaision.

one of the "party favors" is a CDR that collects 2 years worth of bands which have played with us. originally, sara and i envisioned this cd that could have both local and touring bands.

but as im putting this thing together, i notice that well, 700MB is only so much. and i feel like ive barely represented 2 years worth in this thing.

i normally dont get so worried about editing things down, but here i am. i dont know what to cut, or whether i should forsake the out-of-town portion of this cd totally and focus on compiling local bands. i mean, its been a while since philly had a local music compilation. [maybe im just thinking too much of this project already.]

what would you do in this situation? feel free to ask questions.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i tend to groan at local boosterism but that's totally the way to go here

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say go local, but then I have a conflict of interest in the matter.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

BAHAHAHA. just how did you know you were on it?

[i kid. am-alt is on this.]

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

but, some of our biggest shows have been thanks to out of town bands like the lucksmiths / etc and i feel like they need to be included on this, even if for historical reasons.

plus, what if i overlook a local band? man, would i feel like shit.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Will The Roots be on it?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the roots have never played a show with us.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

ps: please re-read the question. do not pass go. do not collect $200.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

and why this has never bothered me before, suddenly i feel like a local cheerleader if i go the all-local route.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, just giving you a hard time. You could have played a show with the Roots, though!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

no, we could have never done a show with the roots. plain parade does not work with guarantees and those dudes are waaaaaaay expensive. plus, they'd never fit into the tiny clubs we book.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

will smith!

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, the Lucksmiths are pretty good but they probably don't need to be on your comp as much as struggling (ahem) local artists do. Not to mention that I think in Philly's case there are probably enough great bands to make another local comp worthwhile -- Buried Beds, National Eye, Capitol Years, Like Moving Insects, etc. (you've booked shows with all of those guys, right?)

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

which lucksmiths song would it be?

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

cinniblount: will smith, totally. he always plays for cheeeep at tritone.

hurting: you're right, there's plenty of local bands. but then i feel bad for ignoring groups like LOW SKIES who could use awesome exposure [in like, 5 people will actually listen to it] from something like this.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

im not sure if they just dont like me or they really are that busy, but plain parade has never done a show with the capitol years.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

if you have enough to cover each letter, pick bands so that the first letter of each band name spells out PLAIN PARADE. Actually, do THE PLAIN PARADE and start the thing off with Trouble Everyday.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit. Well why not do two CDs?

BTW we opened for Lucksmiths once. I must admit, even I found them sort of dreamy.

Also, did you know that Jeff (guitarist) from Cap Years used to be our steel player? What a character. Anyway, at this point they probably are pretty busy -- I heard they were the house band for Carson Daly or some shit one week recently, and they did some shows with The Pixies.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, the only non-local track that has to be on here is "plain parade" by the cardigans. i mean, what would we have been named without it?

manthony: sadly, i dont think there are enough bands in philly to spell out our name BUT I AM GOING TO TRY.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

hurting, if you want to help me burn cds in the next two days, ill do two cds. but i guess you have that show in pgh, so you cant help out, which means due to time constraints, i can only use one cd.

all im sayin' is, thank heavens i have a new computer that can burn cds. because if i had to mass dub cassette tapes again [like i did for the sugar town 2 year], i might go berserk and kill everyone.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

didnt jeff used to date a girl named hale? she and i graduated from metuchen the same year. THE WORLD IS SMALL.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, all roads lead to Rutgers. I don't know Hale though, at least don't think so.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, central jersey. the center of my universe.

but back to teh question -- im sensing a consensus [if two people count as one, that is] that i should do a locals only cd...

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh! I'm sorry, I assumed Plain Parade was a band, not a booking group.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

nono, its OK. i was foolish to assume people know what plain parade is.

[btw, http://www.plainparade.org]

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Tough call, cause while I like the local idea, I can see that if you've booked some good nat'l acts you'd want to strut a little, not to mention helping them get some notice. Maybe you can split it, but that seems like it leaves not much room for either, so again I'm no help.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

this just means that plain parade has to do an official compilation somewhere in the next year, because we're totally running out of space on this one.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Or perhaps meritocracy is the way to go -- just pick the best stuff regardless of local or not. If it's really about Plain Parade, make it a kaleidescope of all the best that Plain Parade has to offer.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way, you should post a list of all the bands that you've booked on your web site.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 November 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Low Skies cool? I think my band is playing with them in a few weeks.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Friday, 19 November 2004 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, I hate to offend Maria's tastes, but I wasn't so into them. The lead singer sort of creeped me out, the drummer played way too loud for the style of music, and the songs weren't that interesting. They had some good moments though, and seemed like cool guys.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 November 2004 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

ive seen them a few times and i have to say saturday was not their best. otherwise, i think they're pretty great.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 05:29 (twenty-one years ago)

So are you giving these cds away or selling them, Maria? I was involved in a similar project last summer up here in Portland, OR. A group of volunteers and I put together a 3 day music festival and released a double cd to coincide. I originally wanted this cd to just feature local bands (being of course, I'm in one and I'm selfish :)). Anyway, I got outvoted and we ended up with a mix of about 30% fairly well known Portland bands (Thermals, The Shins, Quasi, Helio Sequence) and 70% lesser known local bands. I was disapointed, but the fucking thing ended up selling out three times over and they're still selling.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is if you realling want people to pick these things up, you may need to drop a big name or two on there if you sincerely want people to get excited about the Philly scene. Then, as a result, the other bands on the comp will get great exposure, start getting better shows, ect. - at least that's what happened in our case. Hope this helps.

darin (darin), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

give away an mp3 CD filled with millions of songs! people can put the CD in their computer and have access to many many CDs worth of songs. Then they could burn their own. Maybe a crazy/stupid idea, maybe not.
