i'm reluctant to start a thread on the 2004 MTV European Music Awards...

but i noticed a couple of things that are 'interesting' here.

1) Four of the acts nominated for Best Group are based in hip-hop - a first?

2) No Best Dance Act, so not just the BPI thinking it's now too difficult to maintain, even tho they could've given it to Basement Jaxx easily enough whilst also nominating Scissor Sisters, Eric Prydz, Prodigy (assume the album went in at #1 in many European countries) and Armand Van Helden in addition.

3) isn't it weird thinking of Muse as one of Britain's best-selling/most popular rock bands internationally?

HAHAHAHAHA

Best hip-hop
D12

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

'Bout bloody time Britney won an award this year too, but this is some vile comedic shit. Will Kanye vow never to return to this one?

B.E.P. being nominated in Best Pop but not Best Hip-Hop also funny.

I didn't see any of this year's awards, which is a first (sign o' times? or just because i don't have MTV?)

It feels like they were really struggling/lacking that 'big name' quality this year. Nobody that big has done anything much in the twelve months have they?

BEP are nu-metal these days.

Who is "that big"? You don't mean Radiohead, do you?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand this whole alternative category/rock category business. I would have put Muse in the latter probably, but then again, I guess I haven't really been paying attention.

Not as wierd as when it was Bush.

also, George Michael snubbed shockah

i suddenly imagined these awards (and others) five years from now - who would be winning and for what - and felt depressed about the idea that these things just plough on regardless out of custom rather than actual worth.

1) Who is "The Rasmus"?
2) Is Anastacia American? Judging from these categories she would appear to be huge in Europe, but she hasn't had any real hits over here, has she?

Chuckling at the Tomkat's Marquee (Ben Boyer), Friday, 19 November 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know where your "here" is, but yes she is American. The Rasmus are a Finnish rock band whose singer wears feathers in his hair.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 19 November 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Best Italian act: Tiziano Ferro.

AAARGH!

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Saturday, 20 November 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The only thing at all interesting about this show was that I learned that I'd gladly listen to a full version of "Toxic" for tenor, piano, and violin.
