iPod. It's a lifechanging nugget of glory. And it's tiny and portable and you can bring it anywhere, like, say, if you're waiting to pick up a friend at the airport, you can make a playlist on the go and then play that simple knockoff of "Arkanoid" on the screen while you listen to some jams. Definitely iPod.

Wait, how do you play Arkanoid on the iPod? I have one of last year's second-generation iPods, but I don't think I've noticed that.

Go to extras, and then games! It's on there! I forget what they call the game, but you hit the ball with the little paddle and break up the rows of bricks! It's genius!

They have Pong on iPods!

Shit, that's pretty cool — almost as cool as Dope Wars on my Palm Pilot! But I can't listen to tunes on that!

XM's are quite dope. Sleeper of the last two years, the channels playlists are way deeper than you would ever expect for a commercial service.

You don't have to subscribe to a monthly service with an iPod. You can take it with you from home to the car to the office to the airport to your poker night. You get to pick the music.

You don't get Major League Baseball on your iPod, but that's best-listened to on an AM station anyway.

iPod. And get one of these so you can pretend you have your own radio station in your car.

As a Sirius DJ -- I host a weekly metal history show on the Hard Attack channel -- I'm obliged to complicate this discussion by adding the XM vs. Sirius dimension. As far as I can tell, Sirius kills XM -- though it probably varies genre by genre. For metal, hip-hop, garage rock, news and talk, Sirius wins.

An iPod -- or actually I prefer a featherweight USB-ready 128Meg MP3 player -- is just an essential utility at this point. The question is whether you're ready to pay 10 bucks a month for radio.

Howard Stern did what amounted to a 30-minute infomercial for Sirius on Letterman last night. And they make boom-box type systems where you pop the radio out of the car and plug it into the portable, or into your home stereo, I'm sure. the $12/month is what keeps me from checking it out, plus the fact I don't spend much time in my car.

Should I get a 20GB or 40GB?

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Friday, 19 November 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

20GB seems like enough for normal people, but it depends on what you want to use it for (i.e. will you want to store almost everything on it or will there be some turnover.) The minis are a fucking rip off.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 19 November 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

if you're happy with your music collection -> iPod
if you're not -> satellite radio

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Friday, 19 November 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it seems like 20GB would be enough. I have about 25GB worth on my iTunes, but I don't have to have *everything* on my iPod, and I imagine I'll move things in and out -- unless that's a huge hassle.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Friday, 19 November 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I use my iPod more as a jukebox, so you certainly don't need even 10GB at a time. And moving stuff in and out is a breeze. Firewire blazes.

i would hate my ipod if i didn't love it so much. seriously, i'm still fascinated by digital watches.
