Jools Holland

I'm watching the whacky pianist from Squeeze doing a "double keys" thing with Elton John.

As usual, I'm wondering "how did it come to this?". But also, "how do I understand what's happening on my TV?".

In an alternative universe, would it be called Later... With Lynval Golding?

Later... With Chris Spedding?

Or without fantasising, what would be the equivalent show in America / France / Oz etc?

Okay, "Gangsters" is now on VH1 Classic. I wish the TV would stop being sentient and mocking me.

whom do you wish
me to stalk, tv? betty
boo? your wish is
my command

I feel awkward just watching that Keane singer ungracefully flap around the stage.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Saturday, 20 November 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

it's all about JOLIE Holland. She's the queen.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 20 November 2004 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

ten years pass...

I didn't watch it, but I know what you mean. There was a time where I wouldn't have missed an episode of Later..., but these days I'm not really as arsed about it as I used to be. If I'm flicking through the channels and it's on, I'll watch it, but it's been a long time since I thought to myself "ah, Later... is on tonight, can't miss that".

The '90s was easily the best time for the show, IMO.

Now the BBC Studio has closed, it's more difficult to get good guest artists to make the trek to where they film it now.

Ronnie Spector and Wilko Johnson were good to see, the rest was generally alright but no great 'stop whoa' moments

Mark G, Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:21 (eleven years ago)

Who else was on?

umm, off the top of my hed..

Goulding, Sheeran, Paloma, Stone, Nutini..

William Bell, Boz Scaggs, Hayward Dixie,

Something called the Julian Holland Rhythm and Blues orchestra..

Think that covers it..

Mark G, Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:30 (eleven years ago)

Oh and Ruby Turner, but she's more a permie in the big band.

Mark G, Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:31 (eleven years ago)

this was terrible except for william bell, who even got joss stone to loosen the lugnut that keeps her together one quarter turn

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:34 (eleven years ago)

was gonna say William Bell is the name that leaps out of that lot but jesus fuck watching a Jools Holland

Gombeen Dance Band (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:34 (eleven years ago)

yeah i made it about 20 mins tbh

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 1 January 2015 22:53 (eleven years ago)

Oh, I dunno, it was all fine as background to the festivi, the only truly dire and terrible bit was Paloma Faith "doing" "River deep and Mountain High". At least Ellie Goulding's version of Michael Jackson suited her voice and was OK.

That sort of thing, anyway.

Mark G, Friday, 2 January 2015 09:31 (eleven years ago)

Ed Sheeran was pretty good I have to admit and I generally dislike the guy....Paolo Nutini is awful and Paloma Faith is kinda annoying

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Friday, 2 January 2015 18:18 (eleven years ago)

paloma faith sang eight or twenty times, let us note, she was as well to have been slinging twenty ps into a fuckin karaoke machine. if someone of her talent had grabbed the mic at a work do like that shed have been brained by the waiter

local eire man (darraghmac), Friday, 2 January 2015 18:35 (eleven years ago)

i was quite impressed by the guests, unfortunately they were all the audience 8)

> Ronnie Spector and Wilko Johnson were good to see

this, basically.

the trick is to not watch it live - record it and ffwd through the terrible bits.

koogs, Friday, 2 January 2015 18:56 (eleven years ago)

local eire man (darraghmac), Friday, 2 January 2015 20:44 (eleven years ago)

Ottbot jr (NickB), Friday, 2 January 2015 20:51 (eleven years ago)

Didn't see WBell much, some of his first, but when he did Private Number with ANyone, did run away.

Apparently, I crawled into bed last night still ranting about the guests on this.

djh, Wednesday, 1 January 2020 16:11 (six years ago)

They don't film it live y'know

it's after the end of the world (Matt #2), Wednesday, 1 January 2020 16:28 (six years ago)

I once went to a recording(of an ordinary edition rather than a New Year's one). There was very much a message "You will look like you are enjoying yourself". I've no idea why I was there or who I saw - I want to say Massive Attack but this could be delusion.

djh, Wednesday, 1 January 2020 18:49 (six years ago)

I've put in for hootenanny tickets each year, never got. Although, quite pleased I didn't get them this year (apart from Stormzy)
