Things Apart from your music collection That Render You a Consumate Geek About Your Fandom

- On my answering machine, there is a message from ex-Killing Joke drummer Big Paul Ferguson (he was calling me back about scheduling an interview). As God is my witness, I shall never erase it.

- One of the windows in my daughter's room has a tendency to slam shut suddenly (like a guillotine). The wife and I keep it propped up using a drum stick that used to belong to Pete Tweedle (drummer of the flash-in-the-pan Brit band, The Primitives) thrown from the stage at the late, lamented Cat Club and caught by me sometime in 1989.

- I once actually flew home from college to see The Mission at the Ritz in NYC (of all bands),....like a dick.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 20 November 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

nothing :(

i seem to have lost thae stupid enthusiasms that used to result in a good time.

bulbs (bulbs), Saturday, 20 November 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

unless you count my job. and that doesn't result in good times.

bulbs (bulbs), Saturday, 20 November 2004 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Attending three out of five Terrastocks, for a start.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 November 2004 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

erm, posting on ILM?
that's so obvious it should have included in the thread title.

it reflects more my general music geekery than artist-specific fandom, but how about making mix CDs exclusively of cover versions of favorite songs, e.g. '17 versions of "Pretty Polly"' or 'Caravan to Tunisia: 8 versions of "Caravan" and 4 versions of "A Night in Tunisia"'

max davenport (axehead), Saturday, 20 November 2004 06:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Y'all know that these rockstars are people just like us, right?

I don't know if they put their pants on one leg at a time, though. Some of my heroes don't wear pants or have their pants put on for them.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Saturday, 20 November 2004 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

When you say pants, you mean trousers right?

You crazy Americans!

gramps, Saturday, 20 November 2004 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the best thing I've ever read here ~
"One of the windows in my daughter's room has a tendency to slam shut suddenly (like a guillotine). Sir, this daughter will develop into a leader, as the fire is my witness.

The most geeked out thing I do is keep all concert ticket stubs in the CD case of the album the band happened to be touring. Perhaps even geekier, I fret about what I'll do with said stubs once CDs go the way of the 8-track.

a proud lurker, Saturday, 20 November 2004 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of geeked out things, I actually think that's a terrific idea, which is sad.

Bruce S. Urquhart (BanjoMania), Saturday, 20 November 2004 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Well really what else are you going to do with them? It's not like you'd ever *gasp* throw them away.

a proud lurker, Saturday, 20 November 2004 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I have every single stub in a pair of old pencil cases in my desk.

Bruce S. Urquhart (BanjoMania), Saturday, 20 November 2004 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm a ticket stub keeper too, though it never occurred to me to put them in cd cases. i throw them all into a shoebox. it used to annoy me when i'd see a really good show at a bar that didn't have any paper tickets and i therefore wouldn't have a stub to take home. in recent years, though, i've learned to accept this.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 20 November 2004 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

my beatles mousepad is pretty geeky (and rockist!). it was a gift, so i'm not completely to blame. but i chose to actually use it, so i suppose most of the blame is in fact mine.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 20 November 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you ever dated a bona fied hottie and encouraged her to steal your Jethro Tull and/or Siouxsie & The Banshees and/or Cure concert tshirts, so that her attention-grabbing torso would serve as a distended billboard for bands you'd like less kneejerkedly associated with fanboy geekdom? Well have you?

no but i've had her dress up for the bedroom.

Okay, I saw Chris Knox in Boston a few years back. Got an autograph, but the only thing I had on me was a $2 Canadian bill. He signed it, making a nice doodle over the Queen's face. It's a rare item, I guess, as the $2 bill has since been replaced by the twoonie coin. Still have it somewhere, although I don't think it's legal tender anymore.

my son -- named after my favorite musician (Miles).

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Saturday, 20 November 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, lovebug, my mother not only named me for Ian McCulloch (I have no qualms with this) AND Ian Astbury (...and there I shrug), but my middle name's Nicholas because of Nick Rhodes (my mother's first celebrity crush!). I also have the seventh most popular name in Scotland.

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 20 November 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course, I think that renders her a consummate geek (aside from at one point owning Japanese import versions of Duran Duran records...in fact, I think she still has the Jap version of Nite Romantics, if I recalled the name of the record correctly).

As for myself, I'm not sure what would render me as such. I'm not terribly obsessive.

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 20 November 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a poster of Kraftwerk's Man Machine on my wall at home, and tons of records hanging on my wall in my college home (ranging from Curtis Mayfield, to Human League, to Minutemen to Leonard Cohen)

Making unsolicited music videos for a band and sending them to them.
Making & posting flyers for a show I have nothing to do with.

I am obsessed with Mike Doughty's cover of Mary J. Blige's Real Love and have attempted a mashup of the two versions.

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 20 November 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and I keep re-reading Lester Bangs' Psychotic Reactions & Carburetor Dung.
More than half of it is just cough-syrup-induced-hippy-dippiness, but the Lou Reed square-off interviews are priceless. Ditto the Kraftwerk interview.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 20 November 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Also great: the bits about The Godz, Tangerine Dream, his horrible neighbor, and The Guess Who's "American Woman."

a guitar pick that i grabbed off the ground at a Low concert that i attended in high school. still got it somewhere, i think.

(x post) Oh - and I have all my ticket stubs from shows seen between 1984 and 1989. Plus I still collect club flyers, going back to '86. Why, Lord, WHY?!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i did this too. as well, for the period between 95 and 2001 i kept pretty much every music listings section from the Detroit Metrotimes to analyze the career trajectory of different bands. totally fucking geeky but interesting to see when alanis morrissette and others played dinky-ass clubs in detroit long before their rises to fame

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

by the way, that shouldn't be an indication of me liking alanis. i don't. serious.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

-when i was setting up a college radio show doing open mic / call-in poetry, the "poem" i used on the flyer was the lyrics to the fall's smile.

-when a new friend shows me his guitar, and offers it to me to play a showoff lick, i instead try to pick out the melody to whatever song is in my head at the moment. after a few tries, i get it, and then hand the guitar back, saying something like, "that's been in my head all day." often it's a radio commercial jingle or something ridiculous like that.

-i keep my exes organized in my head by what i was listening to at the time, because their reactions of disgust or fascination are so vivid; because i know when i was into various bands, i can then extrapolate the time periods when i was with them

-when "high fidelity" came out, everyone i knew made fun of me in various ways related to it

-i've had sex in musty basement stacks of huge record stores, and it's quite a turn-on

-i am not really interested in the world news and the political scene of southeast asia, and suspect this is because i don't much like the music of that area and think gamelan is horribly overrated

-if i'm driving through a big city in the middle of a road trip, i'll make new presets on the radio even if i'm only in town for an hour's worth of traffic, because i end up scanning the dial compulsively the whole time as i try to analyze the city's musical vibes

That must get tougher over time, as more and more radio stations become Clear Channel-ized.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn this is a great thread. I was enjoying it at work today when rudely interrupted by pesky things to do.

it used to annoy me when i'd see a really good show at a bar that didn't have any paper tickets and i therefore wouldn't have a stub to take home. in recent years, though, i've learned to accept this.

Ha ha! Life is HARD, I know...

I've seen Radiohead 40 times in 23 cities around the world in the past 4 years. And...yeah, that's about it.

Good enough for me. I'm almost embarassed to admit I flew down to L.A. once just to see them in 2001. But hell, Bush's tax cut gave me the money to do it. All the more embarassing/perverse, I guess...

starting (but never finishing) a screenplay for an animated full-length set entirely to the swans - great annihilator (many disembowlments, skull crushings and goth sex scenes were planned but never realized, unfortunately)

I am definitely sad this didn't pan out. I'm convinced there's a whole world of art/film just lurking beneath the surface of Swans waiting to be birthed.

And me? The geekiest thing? Well, I have two large boxes of alphabetized index cards upon which I wrote every single band/song I had taped off the radio from '85-'88 or so, one card for each artist's songs. The card would tell me what tape I could find the song on and I had each tape's sequence of songs written down in a separate notebook.
Of course this was college radio, before Clear Channel, when there was a better chance of the existence of God.

oh, God, yes. Ask any Brown and they will go on at length. also...the email address, the Built to Spill tattoo, the Fall setlist on my wall next to the Mission of Burma setlist, etc. I'm too indie to live, much less have a happy relationship

simple as that. as a dad of 2 time demanding kids i really should grow up. but the search for the new as well as remembering the old keeps me bashing away on the keyboard.

Just the long distance trips:
I flew to San Francisco to see the Jazz Butcher.
I flew to Glasgow to see Lloyd Cole.
Does driving four hours each way to see an hour show, alone, and then coming back home at 3:00am count as anything?

I record nearly every show I go to (in the last 5 years.)

I have made silkscreens to make ONE t-shirt (each) of Pere Ubu and Lou Reed.
