bulbs (bulbs), Saturday, 20 November 2004 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

and i think i remember kc flightt sampled them?

bulbs (bulbs), Saturday, 20 November 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

There was some rap single back in 1990/91 -- no idea who it was by, but it was sampled the chorus to "Once in a Lifetime," Byrne's singing and all. The thing was, the VIDEO for it featured Byrne recreating the part!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 November 2004 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

don't remember that, but from Hard Knock Life:

Jay-Z: "It's Alright":
"Once In A Lifetime" + the opening of Kraftwerk's "Hall of Mirrors"

(Jon L), Saturday, 20 November 2004 06:10 (twenty-one years ago)

also Danielle Dax's cover of "Tomorrow Never Knows'; (first cover song I'd ever heard which actually samples intact bits of the original): at the end, inexplicably drops in 8 bars of "Once In A Lifetime".

(Jon L), Saturday, 20 November 2004 06:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i think thats the kc flightt song ned

bulbs (bulbs), Saturday, 20 November 2004 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a Chicken Lips song that is built around a loop of I Zimbra

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 20 November 2004 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't the "Once in a Lifetime" song by Too Short? I remember seeing that on "Yo! MTV Raps."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 20 November 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Shawn Colvin's version of "NAive Melody" is pretty decent. I'm serious. I like it a lot.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 20 November 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

simply red : heaven,
on their vastly under rated debut PICTURE BOOK.

better than you'd think kids.

piscesboy, Saturday, 20 November 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I was about to say that Simply Red had covered "Heaven". And that I really, really wished they hadn't.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 20 November 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't Scandalise Mine by Sugarbear always springs to mind when I think of T.H. sampling rap or dance tracks, I'm sure there's a few trance tunes have sampled it over the years too.

mzui (mzui), Saturday, 20 November 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

KC flight..planet E acid mix..

Tom Jones and the Cardigans - Burning Down The House!

Patrick Allan (adr), Saturday, 20 November 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Ida: "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)."

Also, I'm told that one component of FGTH's "Relax" is a one-note sample from "Psycho Killer."

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 20 November 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, wonder whether that was a bass note -> bassline thing then. It'd sort of make sense.

Also, doesn't quite count, bur obviously there's Mariah! Fantasy, sampling the Tom Tom Club's Genius Of Love.

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 20 November 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)" is gorgeous. Oddly enough, the whistly synth part got quoted (that's replayed, not sampled) for the Spice Girls' "Mama" (!!!).

This link was in the Arcade Fire at Bowery Ballroom thread

todd (todd), Saturday, 20 November 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

bahtology, Saturday, 20 November 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

beulah used to do a live cover of 'psycho killer' that i liked a lot

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 20 November 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

KC Flightt's "Planet E" was one of the first 12-inch singles I ever bought.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 20 November 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

no talking "just head " was a covers cd - Michael Hutchense track especially. "Punk Lolita" -i had never heard of any of these songs-i don't think any of them were singles so it's a strange choice.

monkeyboy, Saturday, 20 November 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The Vienna Boys Choir did Burning Down the House too.

3underscore (___), Saturday, 20 November 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

al green did a great cover of "take me to the river"!

JaXoN (JasonD), Saturday, 20 November 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Phish did an awful cover of "Cities" on a live album, and did all of Remain In Light for one of their Halloween shows. I heard some bits of it and actually dug parts of their "Seen And Not Seen" and "Houses In Motion."

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 20 November 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Just watched "Cool Runnings" last night, and the soundtrack included a cover of "Wild Wild Life" by Worl-A-Girl.

(polkaholic), Monday, 22 November 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sugar (Gimme Some)" off the new Trick Daddy album, featuring Ludacris and Cee-Lo, is an interpolation of TH's "Sugar On My Tongue", which is kind of obscure (was it released anywhere besides Sand In The Vaseline?).

Al (sitcom), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Howbout Living Colour's "Memories Can't Wait"?

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

no talking "just head " was a covers cd

no it wasn't, it was talking heads w/out byrne and with guest singers doing new songs. also, it was crap.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i was at an african restaurant a while back. the music they were playing obviously borrowed some basslines from Talking Heads songs

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 22 November 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

No one has mentioned Luna's 'Thank You For Sending Me An Angel' yet. I like it.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 22 November 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread probably should not go without an honorable mention of "Genius Of Love", which is possibly one of the most sampled songs ever.
