funny thread about something i care nothing about

JaXoN (JasonD), Sunday, 21 November 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

When the Thurston's sleevenotes leak call me.

hiyaken, Sunday, 21 November 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"Thurston Moore liner notes" has sort of become an expression for me denoting a rush of critical acclaim / bigging-up / coat-tail grasping for small-audience-type music.

Pangolino (ricki spaghetti), Sunday, 21 November 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Moreso the sort of thing where "importance" is conferred on someone's work by virtue of testimonials by celebrity curator-musicians.

Pangolino (ricki spaghetti), Sunday, 21 November 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

what horseshit. Moore was there in the beginning through to the end, was personally involved in their signing plus has a unique position within alt.rock so i think he might be qualified to talk on this subject.

And if you like Nirvana or if you don't, you might begrudgingly might have to regard them as an important band within popular music.

liarlair, Sunday, 21 November 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Pangolino - couldn't be more wrong, dude. The man hardly needs anyone to defend him - his reputation speaks for itself - but I can't think of many contemporary people who've done more for indie / noise / countercultural music, on an international level, than Thurston.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 21 November 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with Roger with regards the high standing of Thurston, though I find his writing Nirvana sleevenotes embarassing, in an odd kind of way.

Where you been Roger? I haven't seen you around much recently.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 21 November 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Kevin. Been working a lot, planning a wedding, recording three albums for three deadlines, recovering from a recent tour, filling orders for the label, going to the woods, travelng, occasionally checking out some porn. You know how it is.

as far as the box set is concerned - somebody tell me what i need to download and then i'll quit thinking about it forever.

Ayler box >>> Nirvana box, and I'm only buying one.

Is "Opinion" on it?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 21 November 2004 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. I completely forgot about "Beans" and how completely retarded it is.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Sunday, 21 November 2004 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ain't it a Shame" sucks. "Do Re Mi" is overrated. "Opinion" is good and has a weird spot in the second verse.

earinfections (Nick Twisp), Sunday, 21 November 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just in a record store where a fat guy in a trenchcoat with a ponytail was talking about it. This is what he said: "You know, it's one of those things that I don't want or care about, but have to buy because I have everything they've ever done. They suck anyways."

San Carlos, Sunday, 21 November 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Liner notes include details on apparently every Nirvana recording session. It seems like there was a Jan. 1994 session where they recorded "Exhausted," "Big Me" and "February Stars," all obv. Dave songs, as well as "You Know You're Right," which I'm guessing was the version on the greatest-hits. Anybody heard the rest of this, esp. the Dave tracks?

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 21 November 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're thinking Ayler or Nirvana, I'd say (based on what I've heard, incl. some but not all of both boxes), take the Ayler. He and Cobain were both messed up, erratic, and idiosyncratically gifted, but there's more of a downward, depresso quality to Nirvana's work, even at its most rocking (or maybe I'm stereotyping Kurt re "bipolar" image; don't know if he or Albert were ever actually diagnosed as anything)

don, Sunday, 21 November 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone know if the notes have been scanned and upped?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 21 November 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Thurston Moore is usually funny, which would be very welcome in this case. I like him , he gets a very high approval rating in our house (of about 50%, I suspect).

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Sunday, 21 November 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

RE: Nirvana's session with Dave songs. There was an article about that in Mojo a while back. I think what happened was that Dave and Krist worked up some of Dave's songs while they were waiting for Kurt to show. Sadly he was off shooting up somewhere. Kurt eventually turned up though and did You Know You're Right using Dave's guitar and equipment - that's why it sounds so different. They did some other stuff, but I'd need to go back and check the article.
None of the session is on the box though.

stew, Sunday, 21 November 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

For those of you on the borderline, Target's got it for 27 bucks.

Chris R, Sunday, 21 November 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I see it as 47 bucks at their website.

billstevejim, Sunday, 21 November 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

If you look in their weekly ad, its 27.

Chris R, Monday, 22 November 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"even in his youth" is a great song.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 22 November 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not trying to prove you wrong, but just wanted to let you or anyone else know if they're interested.

Chris R, Monday, 22 November 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

My first thought listening to this box was that it was one of the grungier major label things I'd heard in a while, and then I realized the pun. Seriously, so much of this stuff is super low-fi, it reminds me of the kind of demo and rarity stuff I've been digging up via Bit Torrent. Except, um, more NIrvanay.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 22 November 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Where are you finding demo + rare torrents?

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Monday, 22 November 2004 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

win mx had 12 tracks for a few hours

rape me boy, Monday, 22 November 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Moore's liner notes aren't especially great and could've used an editor--I liked his NY Times piece earlier this year a lot more (they should've just reprinted those!)--but they're sort of interesting. Didn't really like Neil Strauss's notes.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 22 November 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it when Thurston Moore doesn't consider paragraph breaks in his writing.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I have seen it, shrinkwrapped. It looks like a car registration plate. It must be very difficult to smuggle through customs.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 22 November 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

it will be $27 at Target on Tuesday when it's released.

I've never thought much of Thurston Moore's writing, other than the fact that it's Thurston Moore's.

don weiner, Monday, 22 November 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it when Thurston Moore doesn't consider paragraph breaks in his writing.

-- Ian John50n

Blame Kerouac and his On the Road scroll.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I was actually being sincere! It's pleasant because I can just glance at various sections of text, skipping what displeases me without any nagging thoughts of significance.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 22 November 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Kurt eventually turned up though and did You Know You're Right using Dave's guitar and equipment

Did normally play an upside down right-handed guitar, or a left-handed guitar with normal string order?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 November 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I would buy it for 27 dollars.

Where is it cheapest in Britain, oh consumer reporters?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

CDWow = £36

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Still expensive, I think.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ive never owned a nirvana album. I have to be honest... Im kind of considering this.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend of mine got it early, and we had a listening party last night... my favorites from the first three discs (got too late to watch the DVD):

-even in his youth
-they hung him on a cross (droney electric leadbelly cover)
-drain you demo
-aneurysm demo
-endless, nameless demo
-scentless apprentice demo (heavy and noisy and long and jammed out)
-electric polly demo (not like the incesticide version)
-D-7
-sappy (b-side version)
-old age (the best weezer song ever, and it's a fucking outtake.. this song alone helps make the point against weezer--that they were just a nirvana clone with a slightly altered pop:noize ratio.)
-gallons of rubbing alcohol flow through the strip
-milk it demo

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and "do re me" is fucking beautiful also. Most of the acoustic crap on the third disc ain't for me, though.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

acoustic sliver = other really good acoustic track

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Kurt eventually turned up though and did You Know You're Right using Dave's guitar and equipment

Did [Kurt] normally play an upside down right-handed guitar, or a left-handed guitar with normal string order?

That was the first thing I thought of too... Kurt plays lefty, and he doesn't play with the string order upside-down*, so he'd have to restring Dave's guitar to play it.

*Dunno if anyone cares, but there's another Seattle musician who does play with the "normal" righthanded string order even though he plays guitar lefty. Rusty Willoughby from Flop. Completely freaked me out the first time I saw those guys because I'm a guitarist and spend a lot of time watching the guitarist when I'm attending shows. It took me a bit to figure out what the fuck chords he was playing until I noticed he was forming all of his chords upside-down from the way I'm used to. (Rusty was the drummer for at least one Fastbacks record as well.)

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd also like to say that people complaining about the fidelity of the first disc: MENTALISM. Some of it may sound like it was recorded inside a sock, but the majority of it sounds fine--no worse than Bleach, and that album is a miracle of economy.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

surely someone got it today???

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Might get it tomorrow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i recommend it! cheap at walmart!

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it really $27 at Target? What about Wal*Mart?

John 2, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine should come in the post today.

It's hard to kill a horse with a flute (AaronHz), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Got it. Ripped it. Haven't listened to it yet. Definitely on the agenda. It's a hefty package that certainly FEELS nice.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

You sensualist.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm running my fingers over the raised logo now, Ned. It feels so dreamy.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Keep it in the bedroom, hippie.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

so which is the disc to get if u only like in utero
(but like that *a lot*?) disc 3 right?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheapest I saw it today in the real world was 40 GBP. Ridiculously expensive.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Disc 3 has most In Utero tracks, but it's actually my least favorite disc--too much acoustic junk! But the Milk It and Scentless Apprentice demos are ace. Also the B-Sides from that period = good jamz.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Weird. Target at Santa Monica and La Brea was sold out but gave a rain check so you could get it for $27 when they get more in (or take any other CD or boxset at 30% off)... Best Buy downstairs had it for $50.00. I decided to wait... the $27 is too nice of a price.

Chuckling at the Tomkat's Marquee (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Disc Three is definitely the biggest disappointment out of all 4 discs including the DVD. "Do Re Mi" hopefully is a "grower," since I didn't think it was too great upon the first listen.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, just got mine. The cover is HEAT SENSITIVE FFS. Like those t-shirts you could put temporary handprints on.
I'll report back.

PS: Uhhh, that tracklisting lightly glued onto the back wasn't supposed to stay on, was it? Mine fell off immediately, but it was obscuring some more heat-sensitive coolness so whatevs.

It's hard to kill a horse with a flute (AaronHz), Thursday, 25 November 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, just got mine. The cover is HEAT SENSITIVE FFS.

It's what now? Mine appears to be not heat-sensitive, for F's sake or anyone else's.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 25 November 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yours doesn't change color on the back when you touch it? Bummer.

It's hard to kill a horse with a flute (AaronHz), Thursday, 25 November 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe you're not excited enough. Need hotter hands.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 25 November 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

OK I've gone through the whole thing and....
I think this should have been a two disc set at the most. The acoustic demos (for the previously released tracks) are pretty much pointless, and there's nearly a disc worth of them altogether. Of the electric demo/rehearsal versions of previously released songs only a couple are really interesting at all. The stuff worth listening to more than once could have easily fit on two discs, probably could sweat it down to one if you wanted to be hardcore about it.

I'll probably never watch that DVD again, either. That stuff could have been saved for bonus material on the Live! Tonight! Sold Out! DVD if it ever comes out or a DVD collection of videos/TV appearances whatever. Just by itself though...I won't bother to take it out of the (extremely awkwardly designed) case again, I don't think.

Also, I'm a little miffed that a few of the B-sides have been replaced with inferior versions while others have been properly represented, WTF? Moist Vagina, I Hate Myself, Even in His Youth are NOT in their proper versions, which means that those are still only officially available on their import/OOP singles, compilations etc. COME ON! I thought this was gonna round all that stuff up once and for all, guess not.

One last thing: I really wish the goddamn Fecal Matter tape was on here. They went as far as to put a scan of the J-card and the track listing in the booklet, but no dice. I still haven't heard the thing and would like to, crap that it probably is or no...

It's hard to kill a horse with a flute (AaronHz), Thursday, 25 November 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Fecal Matter tape........crap that it probably is.....
No pun intended, but haw.

It's hard to kill a horse with a flute (AaronHz), Thursday, 25 November 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope someone bootlegs this bootleg box.

Puddin'Head Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 25 November 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Got my copy today, but haven't listened to it yet. I can emphatically second Matos' assessment of Neil Strauss' liner notes, which are obnoxious for so many reasons -- the solipsistic rockcrit pose calling everything even remotely rebellious "punk", even '50s music; trying to make some big statement about how the majority of a sample set of teenagers don't know who Nirvana are; the dead-horse "thank god for '80s alternative rock, which saved us from that awful music for people who owned Italian villas, y'know, Prince, Michael Jackson, their ilk" snootery. That Onion headline makes so much sense in this context: History of Rock Written By the Losers.
