so i was downloading tracks from unnamed force-inc. style minimal techno act, and one of them turned out to be hard-house in the cheeziest E'd up tradition. and i liked it better! although i have no idea who it is and no way to find out really.

so in the midst of the great file-sharing revolution (TM), have you ever been pleasantly or unpleasantly surprised by what you actually got? enough to track it down?

On Audiogalaxy I thought I had downloaded Britney's last single. It turned out to be some prick singing in a stupid voice with a tedious thrash rock (drum machine and piddly tinny guitar) backing. The lyrics were stuff about characters from Thundercats. I got a much nicer suprise when I tried to download the Manic Street Preachers' version of "Suicide Is Painless", otherwise known as the M*A*S*H theme. I got the original version from the 1970 film, which I liked so much I didn't bother tracking down what I orginally wanted.

I never found out what they were, but some of the tracks originally posing as Daft Punk's "Discovery" album were pretty great, if decidedly un-Daft Punkian.

Before Kid A came out, I was trying to download it all, and came across something labeled as "bonus track (after MPS)." Turned out to be 45 seconds of Styx's "Mr. Roboto"...

Dictionaraoke. I particularly recommend that version of "00PS I Did It Again" by Bratno Spare-us.

Combine the two: It was Wynona with Courtney both naked dancing to some Beck muzak. It actually could be a great video. If you turn off the music that is

A day or two after the the Guns n Roses show last New Year's Eve, Napster got flooded with files marked "GUNS N ROSES - NEW - CHINESE DEMOCRACY LIVE NEW YEARS LAS VEGAS" and so forth. There were twelve different titles. It didn't matter which file you got: they were all the same song, a guy doing a very poor Axl Rose imitation singing, quoting here directly, "Can't quite find a reason/Why you are so stupid/It blows my mind/that you'll never find/a reason to live." The guitar solo was so horrifying as to defy description. Later I found a guy who had actual new Guns n Roses stuff, which was marginally better, though nowhere near as funny.
