New Fiery Furnaces... woop!

I haven't seen anyone else mention this anywhere, so I thought I would. Apparently the Fiery Furnaces are releasing a mini-album called "EP" on Jan 24th. It's not as exciting as it first seems, it just rounds together all their b-sides and non-album singles. However, the good news is it has two new songs: Here Comes the Summer and Sullivans Social Club.

I read it on teletext.

yeah, that figures. Just as I've finally rounded up all the B sides and rare tracks myself, spending quite a bit of cash to do so. My own fault for not learning from my mistakes.

Well, this is good news, anyway - their B sides are their best stuff. Color me psyched.

I should mention that where I read this they mentioned the mini-album would comprise of 10 songs in all. Does that mean it'll actually all the b-side stuff, or just a selection? I can't quite remember how many there's been, right now.

Er, if that's the UK stuff, the singles I know they've released are Crystal Clear (2 B-Sides) and Tropical Ice-Land (1 b-side, but the single version is rather a lot different from the album version so that's probably on too), along with Evergreen & Single Again, bringing it up to seven - another two new songs, and one other. Probably they had a different B-Side on 7-inch or something.

b side and single collections that aren't 'complete' are pointless and stupid. Remember that preposterous Smog 'collection?'

Me neither.

I'm not sure if I'd agree that the b-sides are the best stuff, but a lot of them are quite good.

There are quite a few non-album tracks in addition to what William mentions. There are a couple vinyl-only b-sides ("Duffer St. George," "Sweet Spots," and "Sing To Me"), plus "The Winter," "One More Time," and some alternate versions of "Tropical Iceland," "Bright Blue Tie," "My Dog Was Lost..." and "Up In The North."

Hmm. Well, if he read about it on teletext, I'm suspecting a UK-only release (which is odd, cos the Furnaces ain't been that successful over here)... I'm guessing the tracklist is what I suggested plus probably 'One More Time' off the Rough Trade 25 compilation.

Well, I do know that "Here Comes the Summer" and "Sullivans Social Club" were recorded and intend to be another 2-track single, but I figure that the label thought that it might be easier to market an ep or mini-album and repackage the previous singles. I think that's pretty sensible, actually.

Evergreen & Single Again, bringing it up to seven - another two new songs, and one other.

yeah, there was a exclusive-to-the-7" track for that single, too.

That would be "Sing For Me."

It's kinda weird actually, I think a lot of people are of the opinion that their b-sides are their best stuff. I certainly know a lot of people who think that way. I'm fond of a lot of the b-sides, but I'm not sure I'd agree with that.

I think this may well make a nice little package, though. It'll be nice to have them all together, officially.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 25 November 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, but will they be all together? From the rundown above, I'm not so sure now. That'll make or break it for me.

They're my favorite band I never listen to.
