Let us now discuss Ja Rule.

Let's shall. Becuase I am at a complete loss as to what specifically is meant to be worthwhile about him, and might, without too much hesitation, go so far as to say that he is my absolute least favorite personality on contemporary radio. Not to be deliberately provocative, but I'd almost say that I am appalled by him, and will be, for the remainder of this thread, inserting asterisks into my name and email address so that no one will ever Google me and discover that I'm willing to even admit his existence. Yeah: he just really, really bothers me.

I'd like a reading on just how receptive ILM is to his work. I personally find it unworkable and smug that he tries to insert tough-guy posturing into fluffy pop tracks (see J.Lo, whose last couple singles would have been pretty likeable if he weren't croaking so aggressively over so much of them or their respective remixes). Solo, I still find this tendency to go against the grain of the production he's working with, as well as to seem forced and unnecessary. He strikes me as the short, frail, unattractive fellow at the bar who makes it that much worse by going on about how wild and crazy he is. Plus he croaks. Quite smugly, if I may say so.

So: here is a pop thread! Please contribute either (a) differing opinions, which I will find interesting, or (b) complete agreement, which I will find correct. :)

Nits*h, Wednesday, 26 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Another way of stating my complaint is this: the croak would work if he came across as a guy who croaks but doesn't particularly care whether you like that or not. Instead he comes across as a guy who croaks and is devoting 110% of his energy to letting you know how much you should take him seriously despite that. I find it unattractive.

Nits*h, Wednesday, 26 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Very funny, NITSUH.

Josh, Wednesday, 26 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops. ;)

Josh, Wednesday, 26 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the tupac thing is fucking irritating but i loved him on 'can i get a...' and that meth/ redman track. i would never buy an album of his unless it was superstar-dream- team-producers thing.

ethan, Wednesday, 26 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Based on what little I've heard, Nitsuck, I'll have to concur. He sounds like he's trying WAY too hard to sound thuggy and gruff--and just comes off as sort of ridiculous, but not in an interesting way.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 26 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a sick fascination thing going on with whatever radio song of his is based on Stevie Wonder's "Do I Do". When I drive my roommate's car, it only gets one radio station (top 40), and despite Ja Rule's awful vocals and anti-charisma, hearing Stevie's backing tracks is often the closest I get to good music on an average car ride.

Jordan, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

First off, I think teaming him up w/ J. Lo produced the most listenable track in Mizz Lopez' unending string of singles. They're perfect for each other, in that they're both trying way too hard to impress you with their thing (oo! I'm dancing! oo! I'm thug! oo! I'm hard as fuck!) Together, they get all gushy and sweet, and it's nice to hear.

I'm vaguely fond of Ja Rule when he's mixing it up with the ladies (especially "Between Me & You") - regardless of how rough and tough and McGruff he gets, it's all blah blah when the ladies come in to sing their part. All I hear, all I see, all I want are the ladies, and it's all good.

That "Holla Holla / Dolla Dolla / Murda" song, though, is 5+ minutes of hydraulic-hopping bullshit, without a doubt.

David Raposa, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Notable only for being on Jay-Z'a brilliant "Can I Get A...". Otherwise, Ja Rule is a footnote to a footnote.

Big Ja Rule fans and big Metallica fans may wish to note that these two musicial giants are collaborating on a song for either a movie soundtrack or for the next Metallica album.

According to another board I read, a lot of Metallica fans (the ones they have left) are not happy about this.

Oliver Kneale, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ja Rule is the the worst thing ever next to R. Kelly.

bnw, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blasphemy. R. Kelly thoroughly redeems all other flaws with that "Feelin' on Your Booty" remix.

Nits*h, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

up next for mr. kelly: feelin on yr menstrual cycle.

i like ja rule. not as much as dmx but i do. maybe he's dmx with the cactus removed from his ass (cuz face it, evem when X is gettin all maudlin for grandma, he sounds like he needs a pillow to sit on.) or maybe an african-american gollum. i think maybe xitsuh is reading too much into his personality; he strikes me as vaguely lovable in a way, like a pitbull puppy you wanna pick up and pet on the head but who might still take a finger off if you get too close. which seems to be his whole shtick of course with his last couple of hits. (for chrissakes, the last one was a disco song!, a real disco song with the salsoul string flourishes and chimey bits and everything! and it's not construed as a sellout move!) it's become inscreasingly clear that the coupling of ja rule w/diva (or at least fey male backup) is less to take the edge of his Wild n' Crazy Thug Life persona than to play up his essential soft underbelly of wuv. i doubt i could take him over the course of a whole album, but on a single by single basis he's more than adequate. at least he has a recognizable vocal personality.

jess, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess has it - the attraction of Ja Rule is the sense of watching a hip hop persona in evolution. The pressure on hip hop stars to arrive with a fully-formed (and hence unchanging persona) seems quite strong, and the way that Ja Rule has progressively let his guard down a little bit more with each pop song - culminating in the touching, charming "I'm Real (Remix)" - is both fascinating and relatively unique.

Process expressed sonically in his vocals for "I'm Real", where the growl is softened to a mildly gruff croon, and you can actually hear the rigid muscles softening.

Tim, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps what bothers me is the fact that his vocals take up so much room in any given track -- they are very overbearing, and the particular sort of gruffness he favors is the sort that sounds as if it's taking up a ton of effort.

Nits*h, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I should note that seeing the video for "I'm Real" helped - he looked very sweet and sort of bashful (actually in all these pop songs he's like an overgrown version of one of the Seven Dwarves), if not necessarily attractive.

Tim, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He caused me to cringe the moment he showed up on "Can I Get A..." (although maybe not as much as Amil's verse) and basically hasn't stopped since. I don't like to go around pointing out who rips off who all the time, but his influences are so transparent and basically limited to 'oh now he's Pac, oh now he's X.' and his flow on "I Cry" is 100% Scarface.

I will say that I was pleasantly surprised by the singles off his second album, and I truly think "Put It On Me" is damn near perfect. The beat, the call-and-response w/ Li'l Mo, all of it, easily in my top 3 of last year. even a blind, croaking chicken finds a kernel now and then, i guess.

al, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

his last album had only 3 good songs on it... one is duet with j lo, other is first single and the 3rd is 3d single - always on time. this one is my favourite...

Okay first of all I feel that Ja Rule is one of the best rappers out today. And so do alot of other people being that every record he has came out with has been a hit. And before he hooked up wit j.lo her song was nowhere being a hit. so thanks to him she had one. And as far as R.kelly being the worst maybe you need to go listen to his records some more because there is nobody better than him. Who do most people listen to get in the mood, R. Kelly.

I think everyone needs to stop hate 'n' on R. Kelly and Ja Rule because can't none of ya do no better.

Yeah, but not many of us want to try to begin with.

I noticed the Jay Z thread is slowing down, only 55 posts today. Will someone tell me whats going on?

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"actually in all these pop songs he's like an overgrown version of one of the Seven Dwarves" --Tim

I am anxious for his malaprop-filled Doc track.

Actually.. on January 27th.. NOBODY posted on the Jay-Z/Nas thing.... perhaps things are flickering out.

If I wanted to post there I would be pretty annoyed by the time the thread takes to load, now.

I really think that with all this hate for Ja Rule, it seems that very few, if any, people have actually commented on what he is doing at the mic. Sure, he may be an example of a hip hop persona in progress or you might hate his gruff and pseudo-thug attitude, but what does that say about his music? Someone said that they don't like his voice--I say that's probably because he's doing something quite different than a lot of other bling bling pop hop mcs. The guy seems to ride a rythym like a Jamaican deejay. It is as if he is doing dancehall with hip hop beats and an American accent. The tonality of his delivery sets him apart from so many other mcs--he balances between singing and speaking with a ruff vocal style reminiscent of the Bobo dread cultural chanters; popular folk in dancehall in recent years. I'd compare his delivery with Sizzla or Anthony B before I'd compare him to R. Kelly or, frankly, any other mc out there. Now, I'm not say that Mr. Rule is necessarily consciously doing this, I just think it is an incredibly unique style that I would love to see more mcs take on. The tonal nature of his delivery is why JLo's song sounded sooooo much better when he was involved. "Always on time" is also a perfect example of what I am talking about. We've got a guy who is doing something subtle, yet really interesting, in mainstream hip hop. I invite you to think more about his music and less about his admittedly annoying persona. I'm not going to say he's better than everyone's recent love (and legitimately so) Jay-Z, but what I am going to say is that Ja Rule is really different and that is why his music deserves an element of respect. Then again, this is only my opinion.

Who do most people listen to get in the mood, R. Kelly.

DON'T THINK SO. I THINK ITS MORE WHAT PEDOPHILES LISTEN TO BEFORE THEY DECIDE TO RAPE YOUNG GIRLS AND VIDEO TAPE THEMSELVES. PERSONALLY IF I WAS TO GET IN THE MOOD, R. KELLY WOULDN'T REALLY DO IT FOR ME. MORE ALONG THE LINES OF MAXWELL, TEDDY PENDERGRASS, MARVIN GAYE...

Let's all send him a "Happy Birthday" - The li'l guy turns eight tomorrow! Tempus fugit, where does the time go? Seems like only yesterday he was that precocious little five-year old, selling millions of albums and signing multi-million record contracts, when most kids his age can barely even scribble their own name. Man, do I feel old...Anyway, happy birthday, Ja. (And we wish you 20 more!)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 28 February 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

so he was...negative 18 months old when he appeared on "Can I Get A"?

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 28 February 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

I never really liked his verse on that song, but it's pretty impressive for a reverse toddler.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 28 February 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

I'm just glad he was never called Jah Rule.

Then he would have needed to have been shot for having a great name and being crap.

omg the cast bios from the movie website:

The ascension of TobyMac’s solo career has been nothing short of spectacular. In an era of declining music sales he has consistently defied the odds and has seen his sales increase with each new album release. This is no small feat. With his fourth studio album TONIGHT, he is poised to take things higher yet again. Having climbed the mountain once with the group dcTalk (4 Grammys, more than 8 million albums sold), TobyMac knows how difficult the journey can be and how much work the process actually takes. Rarely does an artist get to soar to great heights for a second time, but soar he has. He took home his first Grammy as a solo artist last year after receiving Grammy nominations for each of his first three solo projects (Momentum, Welcome To Diverse City, Portable Sounds). And last year TobyMac topped 2 million in total albums sold during his solo career. He has done it with a combination of talent, hard work and humility which has produced songs that resonate with people from all walks of life. Starting with dcTalk, and then going solo when the group disbanded in 2000, Toby still clings to such rootsy notions as hard work, persistence, patience and—perhaps most relevant of all—the power of music, which he insists is still what keeps him going.

The funny thing about this thread is that for several years now I've had intense nostalgia for Ja Rule. The voice is a thing of beauty! One of the most fun days I've had in years involved losing my voice and wandering around the house croaking out Ja Rule singles. A few months back I was listening to his greatest hits record over and over. The beat for "Put It on Me" is a wonder. I think what I am saying here is MY HOW THINGS CHANGE ETC.
