i pick (7) david bowie.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 29 November 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

A boring answer, but (1), with (3) coming in second.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 29 November 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Fiona

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 29 November 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The, er, Beatles released two different versions of it....

scotstvo (scotstvo), Monday, 29 November 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Laibach

Bimble (bimble), Monday, 29 November 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer the inkblot that looks like Catherine Deneuve. Oh wait...

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 29 November 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The Beatles, Beatles Anthology version. (I can't say that I've heard even half of those listed however.)

LaRue (rockist_scientist), Monday, 29 November 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

(People who scorn the Beatles Anthologies are nuts.)

LaRue (rockist_scientist), Monday, 29 November 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Fiona

miccio (miccio), Monday, 29 November 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Germania, Laibach's female choir, did their own ladies only version. It is excellent.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Monday, 29 November 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never been affected so much by the song, except for the version that "GI" Joel Sherman (2002 National Scrabble Champion) performs towards the very end of the Scrabble documentary Word Wars that premiered at this year's Sundance festival.

So I guess (37) "GI" Joel Sherman.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 29 November 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Fiona Apple. One of those cover that for some of us are even better than the perfect original one.

elgolfo, Monday, 29 November 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Fiona.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 29 November 2004 06:22 (twenty-one years ago)

All the Fiona mentions are giving me hives. I'll vote for Laibach.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 November 2004 06:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Laibach with the Beatles coming in a close second.

hector (hector), Monday, 29 November 2004 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

(1) & (20)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 29 November 2004 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Beatles versions breakdown:

1a) The Anthology version (swirly sitars)
1b) The "Charity" version (girl backing vocals)
1c) The "Let it be" film version (heavy handed drums)
1d) The "Let it be" album version (orchestra)
1e) The "Let it be Naked" album version (umm not sure, maybe the same as 1c)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 November 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The Bowie version is a blot on the otherwise perfect Young Americans.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Monday, 29 November 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"None" is an option if I fucking say it is. Can't stand the bloated self-righteous dirge.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 29 November 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

As much as I love 10cc and Bowie, there really is no doubt here. In 99,9 out of 100 cases, the original is the best. And it certainly is when it is by The Beatles.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 29 November 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Fiona.

Just Kate (papa november), Monday, 29 November 2004 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

not one of my favorite lennon tunes - i much prefer him in ranty self-righteous mode to spaced-out self-righteous mode.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 29 November 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with Marcello - it's a terrible song, and I can't choose one out of the few I've heard.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 29 November 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

laibach .. and the bowie.

mark e (mark e), Monday, 29 November 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Laibach.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 29 November 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Germania, Laibach's female choir, did their own ladies only version. It is excellent.

Yes it is!

rwillmsen (rwillmsen), Monday, 29 November 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

it's my favourite beatles song. i have only heard the original version.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 29 November 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

At first glance, I thought number two said *Mose* Allison. Even if it doesn't exist, that's my vote.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Fiona Apple version. It led me to take another listen to the original. I guess that's the mark of a good cover version?

mcd (mcd), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone played it?

I've always found the timing of it very odd. is there one of those 2/4 bars in ther eat the end of "universe". that was common in beatles stuff.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yet another vote for Laibach.

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

beatles charity version. who does the version that is stinking up the commercial television airwaves on some advert?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

is there one of those 2/4 bars in ther eat the end of "universe". that was common in beatles stuff.

sometimes they add a beat after "universe" and sometimes they don't. sometimes they cut two beats from the turnaround and sometimes they don't. if i didn't know any better, i'd guess lennon cut it live going totally on instinct, without even realizing what he was doing in those parts. and i don't know any better, so i'm sticking with that theory. the original mix, which appears on past masters 2, sounds pretty much like a demo anyway.

i've never heard rufus wainwright's version on record, but i saw him do it live on tv and it was great.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

11, 24.

(but really, fiona too. how dull.)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I HATE Rufus Wainwright's version of this song. I guess my favorites are the Let It Be verson and the Fiona version, but I haven't heard very many of the others...
