Albums you love but never seem to be able to get all the way through

I love the Ministry album "Psalm 69" but I'm quite sure I've never even heard the last three or four tracks. I always feel I've had quite enough by the time the title track rolls around.

Destroyer - This Night. It's his masterpiece, I believe, but the sheer weight of the thing wears me out by 'I Have Seen A Light' sometimes, and definitely by 'Self Portrait with Thing'.

The album was recorded as it was written and learned by the band, so there's a strange tension to every track, like they were just figuring out where the song could go when they were tracking it. It leads to a dazzling mess, really, that's so unfinished and curious as to make the album hard to get a handle on. I'm still listening to it closely, though, two years later, because of the chaos.

69 Love Songs to thread! Actually, I never have any trouble listening to the whole thing, I just have to make sure I have the time. This is a good thread. Guys who said This Night and Blonde on Blonde OTM, I've always said those feel like the longest albums ever made. Let's see, what else... Something/Anything is pretty long. Crunk Juice too. Actually all rap albums ever. Except anything pre-'95, they had some restraint back then. I've never actually made it through all of All Eyez on Me, so let's make that my official vote.

I don't know if I love it but I used to listen to Ryan Adams's Gold and fall asleep in the middle and wake up and it was still going. Adams's nemesis Robbie Fulks said something funny about using using digital technology to edit out the whole extra CD that was hidden inside that album.

otm. "corrosion" and "grace" are like the extra side orders you order in anticipation of being super-hungry but realize you are too full by the time it comes to eat them.

classic album though.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Tilt. I've tried about a half-dozen times while intending to listen to it the whole way thru, but I've never succeeded, even if for the first 10 minutes I'm thinking it's maybe the best album ever.

bill neil (inabillity), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

LIL JON TO THREAD

(although I got all the way through Crunk Juice and the remix CD the other night and was inordinately proud of myself)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Autovac, those bonus tracks on SF Sorrow are great! 'Defecting Grey' especially.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Fiery Furnaces Blueberry Boat to thread

also all US Maple, all Birthday Party

and SO many hip hop albums, natch

i think MOST albums dip in quality toward their middle / end.

I decree: every album should fit on one side of a 90 minute tape. There I said it.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

beatles white album" too much, too soon and i'm busy but all tracks are brilliant

whitey, Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Steely Dan, Gaucho: I always fall asleep midway through (and this is a good thing).

Sly & the Family Stone, There's a Riot Goin' On: I'm just never in the mood for "Thank U for Talkin' to Me, Africa"

chrome - half-machine lip moves - i dunno, i always get distracted, and dont even get to alien soundtracks on the twofer, unless i start with AS first...

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Pulp - His n Hers...

I think it has something to do with only having this on cassette, and not really being all that bothered about the second side.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You are missing out on the fabulous David's Last Summer!

ledge (ledge), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Def Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat but even one track is enough to make me feel a bit queasy.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

FSOL's "Lifeforms" and Orb's "Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld" are both really great albums. However, I still have a problem being patient enough to listen through double albums that last for much more than 90-100 minutes.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 2 December 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

So many...

Howzabout 'Daydream Nation' and '60 Watt Silver Lining'...?

John 2, Friday, 3 December 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

If you can't make it to the end of Daydream Nation, you need to trade in your ears.
