What on earth is 5 doing in there then?

Tom, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not the Gregory Isaacs record which I bet is ace.

11: Eartha Kitt, ‘I Wanna Be Evil’
That voice scared the SHIT out of me when I was young.

helenfordsdale, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(well yes, in fact this = my perfect 30 yes, tom, but surely it is distracting to explain that?)

mark s, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thumbs up from the SE19 jury for 4, 8 and 10. It's cold outside.

That voice scared the SHIT out of me when I was young.

That voice scares the shit out of me now, and I'm definitely not young anymore.

15. Yeah!!!! "Oh Kato, will I ever see you again?" I'd been trying to find this song for over about 15 years till Napster came around. God bless filesharing. I just put it on an Xmas cd for Anthony, actually. Who was the singer, Mark? Did she do anything else?

Arthur, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh. I mean 14. Which is a number, obviously. Terribly sorry.

Arthur, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lori Larty. L&tCs (= Bill Drummond and David Balfe) made an LP, The Lonely Spy, for Korova — but more I know not. Can't find her on the interweb except in ref Touch or Spy.

mark s, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

O.k., Mark this is strange, I was just playing Eartha Kitt's song, that very one, tonight.

But what the hell is Cath Carroll doing there? Isnt that for the over fourty goth set?

michealchallis, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am over 40 micheal! so it's allowed

i got a Eartha Kitt best-of CD for my dad at xmas: he has all these fantastic old 50s EK LPs, but now he's bed-ridden and couldn't really work the LP player even if he wasn't so CD is where it's at, cuz he can work that.

mark s, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am under 40 and like Cath Carroll. I heard 'True Crime Motel' only the other day and it has aged v. v. well.

Andrew L, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well, you got me on this one, because I've only heard three of these: Adverts, Joan Jett, and Orioles. And only remember the latter two offhand.

M. Matos, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

10: Dollar, ‘Videotheque’

Yes...and I recently picked up the 7 inch of "Mirror, Mirror" with the intention of re-selling it, but now I've decided to keep it because it's so good.

David Inglesfield, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark, Eartha Kitt is mad genius. Love the design of the early 1950's covers.

Didnt she, wasnt she brought down becuase of her vovacious sexual appetite leading to a number of lovers leading to unwanted gossip leading to her recording career and film life becoming strictly b- list, when at least, her recordign career was a-list?

definite original riot grrrrrrrrrrl with a lot of glamour and to piss off several people i will say she was the black courtney love.

a true star.

micheal challis, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"the only etchings I've seen have been behind glass" My parents had to explain that one to me.

"I want to wake up in the morning with that / dark, brown taste." I understood this one pretty well from the get. The only EK song I like better is "Monotonous".

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(Tracer you just reminded me of my dad trying to explain to me aged 7-ish an off- colour Flanders&Swann joke: the one that sings has just in a song invited some ingenue up to see his stamp collection, and ad-libs as an aside, "all unperforated heh heh heh"; which i didn't get, understandably — i didn't get dad's explanation either, tho i now realise this is becase he bailed just at the point *he* realised that he was in a moment going to have to describe the physical diff between virginity and after, in a girl, and what causes this to occur… "Anyway it's a very dirty joke," he concluded lamely, w.a big grin on his face. Around same time he taught me the word "twat" and then said I was nevah evah to use it.)

mark s, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark, i am perturbed by your choice of flm over respectable. explain please!

gareth, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I might have heard three of these, but do not "know" any of them. Kill me now, if you like.
