it's almost time to give this its customary three weeks of rotation...

i wonder if this is their biggest selling album?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Well it's the only one I have.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

do you like it?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it

steven schenk (skenker), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

thoroughly classic. thanks for the reminder to dig it up again.

but i can't imagine it's anywhere close to their best-selling. more like their least i'd guess - though the gap ad raised its profile immeasurably, it was a self-released extra for fans, not a full-blown low album that's ever been widely available in, like, you know, *stores*.

asl, Wednesday, 1 December 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought it because I loved 'Just Like Christmas', which someone had given me on a minidisc compilation. This was maybe, 1999? I hadn't heard of Low before and didn't know that JLC was not typical. I didn't really give the rest a chance, to be honest. Maybe I will one day.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

not a full-blown low album that's ever been widely available in, like, you know, *stores*

Well I got mine in a store (or shop as I call them). Most of the record shops around here dig a pile of copies out every year and punt them for a fiver.

Classic.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i speculated on it being best-selling as:

- the gap ad would have helped it
- it would probably get a relative flurry of sales each year, unlike the other low records? (the likes of hmv seem to have quite a lot of copies on the shelves round december)
- also, it was just as high-profile at the time of release as any low record, no?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

This seems to back up the annual flurry theory -

Christmas: Amazon.co.uk Sales Rank: 664
Trust: Amazon.co.uk Sales Rank: 8,036
Things We Lost In The Fire: Amazon.co.uk Sales Rank: 7,212
Secret Name: Amazon.co.uk Sales Rank: 20,681

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Things We Lost In The Fire seemed to be a breakthrough album of sorts, in the UK, anyway. I don't think albums before that got much press coverage.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Really enjoyable and lovely album -- yeah, now that it's December I get to break this out again, along with a slew of other fine things to listen to...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

From across the pond -
Christmas: Amazon.com Sales Rank in Music: #4,294
Things We Lost... : Amazon.com Sales Rank in Music: #8,380
Trust: Amazon.com Sales Rank in Music: #55,283
Secret Name: Amazon.com Sales Rank in Music: #58,537

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

do we have any idea what those Amazon rankings mean in terms of sales? i wouldn't be too surprised if it represented, say, a dozen copies of Christmas sold in the ranking period, eight copies of Things We Lost, and zero of Trust and Secret Name. bottom line being not a great difference in number of copies sold.

i would think all of their Kranky discs (heck and maybe the Vernon Yard one) have sold more than Christmas due to distribution if nothing else. in recent years Christmas has been more available but i'd guess for at least the first two years you could only buy it at a show, on their web site or in Minnesota.

maybe Lowficionado Pete Scholtes can weigh in on this one

asl, Wednesday, 1 December 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought it off Amazon in 2000 I think.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Anytime I think of Christmas songs, 'Just Like Christmas' always comes first. And the rest of it is also very nice. I think I tried playing it to my parents once, they didn't especially go for it...

It's the only Low record I own, for some reason, which is odd cos I've liked everything else I've heard by them.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Just checked my Amazon.co.uk order history:

Order Date: 15 Jun 2000
Order #: 026-3891276-2825202

Items:
1 of: You Will Have Your Revenge
1 of: Christmas

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought the Christmas album, from a shop, shortly after the Christmas it was released (99?). To the best of my knowledge it has been widely available ever since.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet it's their biggest (cumulative) seller for the same reason Nick Cave's "Murder Ballads" is his biggest seller. Never underestimate the power of a ringer like Kylie or a Gap ad.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the only Low record I own, too, and i do like all their other stuff.. thought i was the only one, this is strange

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaron, Wednesday, 1 December 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it's cheap.

I don't think I've ever seen this Gap ad. Maybe it was only in America.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Geez - I am clearly a bit of a low fanatic by ILM terms.

Working on a christmas cut up tape to give away at the club - the idea was going to be lots of this, Spector and other Christmas tunes. Unfortunately, it is up against the splendid chop-n-chase that will be UK no.1 singles at Christmas, which has some real gems to work with. I think I might put low on the other side out of guilt.

3underscore (___), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The Gap ad was shown in the UK, lots of children running around in snow to 'Little Drummer Boy'.
Just did a quick google search and many sites say it was 'Just Like Christmas' but I definitely remember it as 'Little Drummer Boy' - maybe they used a different song in the US.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Saw Low last Dec. here in Chicago. They asked the audience what they wanted to hear, and everyone wanted Christmas songs. They did Blue Christmas and maybe another as well. Love Low, love the Christmas disc, which I got from them at the show. Esp. classic is the line "If you were born today, they'd kill you at age 8"

nattering nabob, Wednesday, 1 December 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, the album that got me into low and still my favourite. My parents love it too.

No probs with distribution over here (UK) as its on Tugboat/Rough Trade as with the rest of their recent stuff. I'm sure I read an interview with someone reputable who said that it was their biggest seller.

Ben Dot (1977), Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

the UK gap ad was definitely droner ... heh, drummer boy.

and i'm 99% sure the album came out in '99. i remember i bought a copy - whence i remember not, but i'm sure i was panicky about it being a limited edition and selling out - *and* got one from a friend for christmas. not sure what i did with the second one, actually. i must have given it to someone. hmm. lucky bastard.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 2 December 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Listening to it again now. Majestic. And I forgot how playful "Just Like Christmas" is despite/because of the subject matter!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 December 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i love the low christmas album but find the rest of their records dull. this does not appear to be a unique position after reading above.

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 3 December 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the new low album produced by david freidmann is really awful.

chaki in charge (chaki), Friday, 3 December 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

they try to be upbeat and poppy. it doesnt work.

chaki in charge (chaki), Friday, 3 December 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

It's that time of year again. Lovely.

onimo, Thursday, 20 December 2007 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

Heard Just Like Christmas playing in Next a few days ago, among the Bing Crosby and Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. Fitted in quite well!

Matt #2, Thursday, 20 December 2007 10:29 (eighteen years ago)

I guess the follow-up would be Wild Billy Childish's christmas album from this year.

Anyone heard it?

Mark G, Thursday, 20 December 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

Nope. I shall investigate.

So far I've been playing the Low one, bits of the Bright Eyes one and some of Sufjan's "Songs for Christmas" along with the usual poppy ones that I have just started a poll about.

onimo, Thursday, 20 December 2007 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

the ONLY christmas album allowed in my house.

Pandaloo, Thursday, 20 December 2007 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

The Low one is lovely and the Sufjan set is fun. Love 'em both.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 20 December 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, I was just looking to revive this thread. Relistening to the album now.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 December 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

"Long Way Around the Sea" -- sleeper highlight?

Mentioned it elsewhere but seeing Kiki and Herb combine "If You Were Born Today" with Alphaville's "Forever Young" is one of my favorite concert memories anywhere, by anyone.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 December 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

"Just Like Christmas" is great.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 21 December 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

is it a christmas-themed "just like heaven" cover?

cuz that would be the best thing in the world.

s1ocki, Friday, 21 December 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

think twee-er

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 21 December 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

the seasonal greetings compilation on mobile records (featuring low, hood and saint etienne) is/was very nice.

djh, Friday, 21 December 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

So I think the actual Christmas tour is under way -- anyone catch it? I'll be seeing the LA show in eight days.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

i had forgotten about the existence of this, finding it trawling through the christmas music was such a pleasant surprise.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

thirteen years pass...

Alan's dad's homegrown yacht rock Xmas songs are pretty sick
