So, is it true that Ninja Tune was funded by the lawsuit/out-of-court settlement money from Coldcut suing M/A/R/R/S for sampling their "Paid In Full" remix on "Pump Up The Volume"?

Is it?

I'd find it odd that remixers today, much less in the late 80s, would actually have rights on their remixes to the point where they can control its use in other songs, furthermore being able to fund an upstart record label from winning a lawsuit resulting from it.

I thought it was Stock, Aitken, Waterman that sued M.A.R.R.S., not Coldcut.

and then secretly funding Ninja Tune

I thought it was A.R. Kane that sued Colourbox!

why did you think this was true donut christ?

i would've thought Coldcut had made enough money via their own hit singles to fund the label, without having to sue anyone (they had their own problems with sample clearance at this time as i recall which in turn led to the collapse of their major label deal, resulting in the formation of Ninja - at least that's what i understood to be the case)

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:47 (twenty years ago)

I was told it by somebody who's not known to be one to just spread bullshit, but I guess he made an exception that time!

Anyway, thanks, guys.

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 2 December 2004 00:14 (twenty years ago)

well it could be true but seems too absurd to be so. what's more likely is that the label Coldcut's remix went out on took legal action, probably jumping on the bandwagon after the world and his wife called out Mackintosh and Dorrell.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 2 December 2004 10:26 (twenty years ago)

Coldcut's legal probs led to the formation of DJ Food while the CC name was held up in said wrangles.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 2 December 2004 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Ninja Tune was funded by John Major and Margaret Thatcher. They wanted some DJ mixes they could truly enjoy.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 2 December 2004 13:27 (twenty years ago)

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooh!

Ronan, I think you meant Dennis.

So long as the bag's Jamaican, I don't think he minds.

Ninjatune was partly funded thanks to Coldcut's bad dealings with Big Life Records who failed to promote there second album.

Some settlement was reached in their contract and they eventually got out, but not after much suffering from an arduous long-term label deal. They obviously formed Ninjatune about 18 months after the split.

Can't see CC ever demanding money from sampling as it has been as much their artform for over 14 years now. Eric B & Rakim's lawyers on the other hand....

If you know the duo's stance on major labels, just email them personally and find out yourself to get 100$ proof to your own question?

ninjatune = my fave label of 2004.

been great fun ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:21 (twenty years ago)

What about the solid steel comps, the new Mr.Scruff is excellent, and other course, Coldcut's "Journey By DJ's: 60 Minutes of Madness" has yet to be bettered in terms of mix Cd's goes. It probably is still the benchmark for eclectic fuckkery in sound, I'd say!

Ninjatune was actually part funded by coldcut getting money from a certain big 80's star who is known for being very friendly to policemen. He didnt credit them with a sample and so paid out in a big way.
Kind of odd coldcut getting money for not clearing a sample but there you go

I was going to say... where's the actual Coldcut sample on "Pump Up The Volume" anyway? There's a snatch of Ofra Haza's "Im Nin Alu" which was also sampled by Coldcut on the "Paid In Full" remix... but you could hardly sue someone for using the same samples of other people's work...

Can someone verify Dennis Thatcher's appreciation for downtempo DJ mixes? It would explain a lot......

does the 'paid in full' remix even have any non-sampled sounds on it!?

amon tobin didn't really do it for me at the time... the tension between the organic-ish textures and the cutting edge computer editing made me queasy for some reason.. a kind of micro-scopic not-fitting-together..

brimstead, Sunday, 28 August 2016 00:35 (nine years ago)

same with cinematic orchestra in a way... the drums sounded extremely lucious and tactile but the overall picture just didn't sit right with me.

I've said it before, but this record is still my favourite downtempo/blunted beats album of all time:

http://www.mixmastermorris.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/zen38.jpg
(The Irresistible Force: It's Tomorrow Already)

Such a brilliant set of samples Mixmaster Morris put on this record, and the addition of breakbeats to his patented ambient house swoops and ticks works surprisingly well.

And if Ntone material is okay to you too, Neotropic's 15 Levels of Magnification is a brilliant set of nervous, minimal electro.
