JD from CDepot, Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Maroon 5. USA!

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It's just occurred to me how incredibly lame both their names are. 'Coldplay' - what is that supposed to do for anyone?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

VS

(still, Coldplay win by virtue of, er, not being Maroon 5)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Anal fisting vs. Ice on genitalia

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Erm. M5 are actually nice people. But yeah, but no but yeah...

Abby (abby mcdonald), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not comparing the bands to those acts, just their names. So you know.

(x-post)

Maroon 5 are funnier and they're both equally affecting emotionally.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Maroon 5 are funkier and have a less boring singer. I vote for them.

chuck, Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris Martin doesn't have a camp wave, and thus loses.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The Maroon 5 singer makes me want to make babies make kittens chew glass.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel that way about Chris Martin but I still like "Yellow" and "The Scientist." I like the first three Maroon 5 singles.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think 'The Scientist' is the one I like too! Is that the running in circles one?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

At least you can dance to that this love song.
but timbaland likes coldplay

Magic City (ano ano), Thursday, 2 December 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I love Coldplay. Maroon 5 have a cool intro on "This Love" and, well, that's more or less it basically. So not much competition here.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I support Americans for Coldplay

Cheek0 (Cheek0), Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You'd like "She Will Be Loved" if Neil Finn sang it, Geir.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Maroon5 isn't bad (at least when compared to most of the useless R&B crap on the hitlists), just that their songs don't quite work, being seemingly too riff based or something. They remind me a bit of New Radicals or Toploader in that respect.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

THEY SHOULD BE ATTACHED TO ROCKETS AND BLASTED DIRECTLY INTO THE SUN

Alex in SC (latebloomer), Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"This Love" has a hot video, and Maroon 5 is a less arrogant band. But Maroon 5 also sucks more.

babyalive (babyalive), Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

SNOW PATROL!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Coldplay.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Tough one. Both have one song I love unreservedly ("This Love" and "Yellow"), but then Maroon 5 is merely bland where I find Coldplay to be downright evil. It's a draw, I guess.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, soddit, 'Brothers & Sisters' was great, 'Shiweeeeeooo Billuh' was cack. Devonian-led starey boys easy.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

A point worse considering: "She Will Be Loved" is the most poorly titled song in history. I mean god, what a fucking passive, non-committed title--didn't these guys learn in high school not to write like that? Of course the chick isn't going to go for them if they sing her such a goddamn bland ode.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The only band blander than Maroon 5 is Hoobastank. Both of 'em make matchbox twenty sound like Pussy Galore. Coldplay by light-years.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get it. He's making a promise.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 December 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I still want to know what exactly about Coldplay isn't "bland" (even if you like them).

sixto brown, Thursday, 2 December 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Coldplay is okay;
Maroon 5 has potential
and this year's best song*

*"She Will Be Loved" -- and I'm not sure I believe this, actually. It's top ten for me though. Dr. Bill has been stripped of his "The Good" crown for spending time parsing the title of a pop song, especially one that talks about a girl with a broken smile in the pouring rain, dood that's poetry that is. Put it this way: I'm more interested in M5's next move than in Coldplay's.

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 2 December 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

man if i end up listening to rock radio just so i can hear this 'she will be loved' song and it suxx there will be hell to pay!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 2 December 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not rock my friend
try "hot 97" or
vh1 maybe

at first it's pop pap
but the hooks are beautiful
and his heart's SO FULL

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 2 December 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

so yeah you'll hate it

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 2 December 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Cinniblount, see the video on Launch. High drama, Dynasty-style! Sophie Muller direction. The singer is having an affair with the mother of his girlfriend and they all live in the same villa in the south of somewhere.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 December 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

the line about the broken smile gets to me for some reason.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 December 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get it. He's making a promise.

Then why not call it "I'll love you forever" or "You'll always be the one for me," or something like that? The third-person reference to the loved one is impersonal and boring, as is the use of the semi-committed future tense.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

they shoulda called it "i'm gonna put it to you"!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 2 December 2004 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the best part is when he's laying on some classy fold-out chair with the girl and the mom is pretending not to care and even rubbing the leg of her abusive husband (who she hates of course). The singer stares at her with unwavering stern certainty that she needs his ass, that he knows her, that she can't lie to him, that she WILLLLL BE LOOOVED, etc. and the mom spazzes and runs away. I wish I could make a face like that.

Dr. B, the point of using the third person is that its not about HIM and his intent but HER. SHE will be loved. There's so little she can depend on but that SHE will be loved.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 December 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

also when she runs away the other anonymous members of Maroon 5 kinda go "huh, whazzgoingon?"

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 December 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

the emphasis is
on 'she WILL be loved' like it's
'she WILL be obeyed'

therefore it's okay--
actually it's perfect,
nothing wrong at all

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 2 December 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr. B, the point of using the third person is that its not about HIM and his intent but HER. SHE will be loved. There's so little she can depend on but that SHE will be loved.

Then why not "You will be loved"? Why the sudden switch to the third person? And would it have killed him to mention who it is that will be doing the loving?

Ugh. This song is so much unbetter than "This Love".

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"her snatch will be catched"

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 2 December 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"her twat will be caught"

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 2 December 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"she will be loved"

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 2 December 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

maroon 5, the new scent from versace

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 2 December 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Bill: it's third AND first,
all the way through the verses
switching back and forth

but it's okay, man,
I know it's not for all tastes.
just my refined ones.

[insert geir/ned winky here so you don't think I'm serious about that.]

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 2 December 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"her snatch will be catched"

Now this, this is committed!

maroon 5, the new scent from versace

Hahhaha, EXACTLY! This is exactly what that title sounds like.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

but it's okay, man,
I know it's not for all tastes.
just my refined ones.

I bet you don't even like "The Reason".

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

are you kidding me?
my wife and daughter both LOVE
hoobastank to bits

my wife thinks the dude
who sings that song is "the half-
asian john cusack"

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 2 December 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I stand corrected.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Coldplay

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 December 2004 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Maroon 5 all the way. You're all mental.

Mind you, Coldplay doesn't actually make me want to vomit anymore. I can even find them pleasant as dentist's office background now.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 3 December 2004 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(And to clarify, I've only heard three Maroon 5 songs and only loved "This Love".)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 3 December 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"This Love" > Coldplay > The rest of Maroon 5's music.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 3 December 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"This Love" is absolutely dreadful, as is "You Will Be Loved." "Harder to Breathe" is alright if you like tepid Lenny Kravitz impersonations.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 December 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

("She Will Be Loved"). Which Coldplay songs honour your fire?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 3 December 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"Clocks" works for me, I have to say.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 December 2004 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a silly musician thing, but the 1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2 count of "Clocks" SLAYS me. Love it.
