Kanye West likes Franz Ferdinand

it's true, he said so on the telly

how come rappers always want to rock?

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 2 December 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

How come Chris Martin loves Mos Def?

Also wtf is with all the FF hate and derision? Did they not do what everyone on here was hoping The Rapture would do? i.e. make the indie kids disco?!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 2 December 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Why would we want the indie kids to hate disco?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 2 December 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

there's just this thing at every awards show where they ask hip hoppers who they're looking forward to seeing and they ALWAYS mention British rock bands (Outkast did it with Oasis, Timbaland with Coldplay) and it always seems like some sort of tactical thing rather than sincere (but of course i could be racistwrong here) - i'm just curious as to the intention behind it (trying to win points with indie/rock crowd or a larger, general crowd because there seemed to be an assumption in the past that rappers were always just fanatics not dilletants).

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 2 December 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Dizzee Rascal likes Franz Ferdinand as well. Well done him.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 2 December 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"they're like white boy crunk music" i think he said. bless! of course it's tempting to say it'd be nice to see the name-checking backed up with remixes and integration of genres...but yeah that's the worst idea ever isn't it (do not answer if you love The Love Below)?

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 2 December 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

New Kanye album - Late Registration

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Thursday, 2 December 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe they're trying to dismantle genre barriers? Maybe they're trying to appeal to fans of that type of band/genre too? Maybe they just like 'em.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 2 December 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Kanye likes Fiona Apple better. And a Kanye/Fiona partnership is much nicer to think about.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 2 December 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pleased by the fact that I randomly inverted Nick's first post. I was confused as to why we would want to put the indie kids off disco - I understand now that I've read properly. I need some sleep...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i think that's all true, but somehow it still seems a bit of a cop out, because the opportunity to namedrop someone up and coming with a similar sound/style/approach is sacrificed in order to curry favour with mainstream media by bigging up the darlings as a safety measure.

no need to restrict this to rappers tho. Elton John let on that he likes Mylo on Saturday morning BBC the other week (effectively the opposite 'cred-seek' tactic in case anyone cares...he did it with Tricky ten years ago too. i guess it does work).

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently the schmuck ('cause that's what i am beginning to percieve him as, even with his phenomenal record and all) also likes john mayer.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i remember when the NME interviewed Mark Morrison and he said that although he didn't listen to it, he respected indie because "it's white people's soul music."

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a nothing thing because there's only a limited number of acts to namedrop at award shows. i was waiting for Usher's 'i'm down with Muse' confession tho, and it never came. wonder if Stereolab and Squarepusher are still popular round Common's house. and you know Pharell would absolutely love Chikinki.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Also wtf is with all the FF hate and derision

because they're so massively over-hyped: simple as that.

"take me out" is probably the grimly fiendish single of the year, and the album's pretty damn good, especially for a debut. but bugger me sideways, you'd think they'd reinvented the very concept of rock. i saw them live at the barrowland the other month and half the audience looked like they were having some kind of rapturous vision, when in fact all they were doing was watching an interesting, quirky rock band riffing on a kind-of postcard/CBGBs theme.

i actually like them, i really do. i'm just absolutely sick of them, especially because my girlfriend has played the album to death. and then some.

i believe they have it in them to come out with something astonishing next time round. i just hope they rise to the occasion.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

also that Kapranos boy is a cock of the highest order, and not in the good way

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

For me, FF is not a band I hate so much I would change radio stations for, but neither would they stop me if I heard them while tuning through the stations looking for something I want to hear. But their mediocrity is transformed into an unbearable intrusion when you hear the 5 or 6 times a night at the pub. So, like Grimly, they're just overplayed, though unlike Grimly I don't start from a very high opinion of them anyway.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't Kanye also proclaim a love of Maroon 5, and work with them? I might be hallucinating this.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate all of these threads where people are basically saying "wait, I thought we all agreed black people made the best music, so why are black musicians listening to music by white people? it's not right!"

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate all of these threads where people are basically saying "wait, I thought we all agreed black people made the best music, so why are black musicians listening to music by white people? it's not right!"

that's not what's being said. that whole genre integration is a great thing. but when innovative rap artists start to give props to the likes of john mayer, linkin park and maroon 5, it's no wonder if you suspect that they're jumping on the bandwagon.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

..but when innovative rap artists start to give props to the likes of john mayer, linkin park and maroon 5..

Mainstream-accessible hip-hopper finds mainstream-accessible music from white rockers... accessible. Film at 11.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I've said it before in other threads, but I call bullshit. there's no 'right' answer -- it doesn't matter if Kanye said he liked Maroon 5 of Pulp or the Velvet Underground or the Beatles or Death Cab For Cutie or Journey or My Bloody Valentine or The Cure, people here would jump to overanalyze it and act shocked. the issue isn't rappers liking bad music or trendy music, it's rappers liking white music.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the issue isn't rappers liking bad music or trendy music, it's rappers liking white music.

no way. i can see why andré likes the ramones, beatles, buzzcocks. i can see why common likes stereolab, and i can see why kanye likes franz ferdinand. i can see why pharrell likes radiohead and led zeppelin. but i call bullshit, too - or bad taste or bandwagon-jumping or all three - when mediocrity like mayer, maroon 5, linkin park or incubus starts getting crazy props.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

MILLIONS of people like those bands.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

millions of people like celine dion, too. she's still a mediocre artist, at best.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Millions of rappers like Celine Dion.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Millions of me like rappers.

It Takes a Nation of Millions to Like Celine

That's NOT mediocre.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

dammit, what's with the green hair on the baby?

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Thursday, 2 December 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what I thought when I saw it in WHSmiths earlier.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 2 December 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's easier to like FF in the States, because over here they're not relentlessly over-hyped or over-played. ie., you might hear their song once in a night, not 5 or 6 times, and they haven't exactly broken through to mainstream visibility. Out of curiosity, was Kanye being interviewd on a British show when he said it? Because it might have been partly motivated by a chance to show that he was hip to what the UK kids are listening to.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 2 December 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh it was at the European MTV Awards for Channel 4's presentation of and i think it was a casual but tactical thing. i'd be amazed if Kanye has heard the Franz Ferdinand album. if this IS the case (and it may not be) i'm not criticising him majorly for doing it and nor is it really that important, and i would actually prefer to be wrong.

funnily enough, if he'd said he was loving the new Morrissey album i'd have found that much more believable (you couldn't make it up). And if he'd said Dizzee Rascal (if he'd actually been appearing/nominated at the EMAs then maybe he would've??)

i guess it's true i may not have thought to post a thread if it had been Kapranos saying how much he liked West, but perhaps that's just down to the trend for white rockers to namecheck hip-hop being more established.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 2 December 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I rememeber when Donny Osmond told Record Mirror in 1988 or 89 that he was very into 'Viva Hate'. That was cool. I realise Donny Osmond isn't a rapper.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 2 December 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck D also confirmed to Record Mirror that he took the title of 'Louder Than A Bomb' from the Smiths compilation.

Millions of Rappers That Like Celine Dion Now Living Will Never Die.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 2 December 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Al OTM

i'd be amazed if Kanye has heard the Franz Ferdinand album

wtf you think Kanye doesn't watch MTV?

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 December 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe stevem meant the whole album.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 2 December 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

what you think Kanye can't go to Best Buy?

"it's not that this challenges my stereotype, it's that it doesn't follow the trend that was established."

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 December 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't imagine Kanye watching MTV for more than a few minutes every now and then. he's a busy guy!

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 2 December 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm probably under-estimating the buzz about FF in the USA tho. i don't know what sort of impact they've made over there, assuming they havem (but only in certain circles obv.)

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 2 December 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

No they've had MTV hits and their album has crossed over to anybody who watches MTV.

I like Usher but don't actually own any albums. If someone interviewed me I'd say I like Usher. If I was making Kanye money I'd have bought the damn album already.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 December 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

also I'm guessing Kanye reads and saw FF on the cover of magazines. He's a busy man, but this is his market. He makes popular music and probably pays attention to popular music.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 December 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Rappers are usually around 10 years older than their audience. As a result, they have a musical taste that is 10 years older too. Like all other musicians.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 2 December 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought you didn't consider rappers to be MUSICians ;)

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 2 December 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of them are. In addition to being rappers, I mean :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 2 December 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

it makes you wonder if there ever actually was a time when artists plugged artists involved in the same genre in interviews and at awards.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 2 December 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

We still haven't addressed the thread title. The point I want explained is: why the hell shouldn't he like FF ? Call me naive, or perhaps I'm gifted with not being conscious of 'musical taste apartheid, maybe it's a London thing'.

Kanye and FF have got one thing in common above all else - they are among the heppest cats of the 2004 scene, they are among those who dominate the awards - why shouldn't he have heard of and enjoy them ?

What appears to be suggested is - and I must stress that I don't think any of them are true -

a) he can't possibly like FF - we consider it to be shite white-boy music and way beneath him,
b) he can't possibly like FF because black people are incapable of liking music made by and enjoyed by white people,
c) he is obviously making a cynical bid to gain cred among an as-yet untapped audience of FF fans.

Or maybe, heaven forbid, he just likes it....?

darren (darren), Thursday, 2 December 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i think that he actually likes them. i like them. all i said is that he must be jumping on the "bright rappers like white music" bandwagon if he says that he likes john mayer or maroon 5, because his tastes can't be that bad, for sure. listen to the man's album, ferchrissakes. it's verging on genius!

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Thursday, 2 December 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

why the hell shouldn't he like FF?

well i don't think it's 'a London thing' but i suppose it's just based on stereotypes - the ones that exist, the ones i've encountered (not that i know anyone quite like Mr West really, but i know a lot of people who think he's great and some of them like FF too ha).

i just find it a little curious that every time an artist from the hip-hop or what you might call 'urban' genres seems to always big up already massively popular and mainstream friendly rock artists - on a political basis MORE THAN an assumption of race and stereotypical music taste (tho you may argue it amounts to the same thing).

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 2 December 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

What this all comes down to is:

"Why can't the musicians I enjoy all like each other's music instead of liking stuff I hate? (Alternately, why do musicians I hate like music I think is great?)"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 December 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

and really i'd like to think people would take it as read that i already asked myself the question 'why shouldn't X like Y?' - i'm just pondering a statistic if nothing else.

it's a funny dynamic tho - West, Timbaland, Jay-Z, Andre 3000 and of course Dizzee having received such praise over the years, all being different enough from each other, but the artists they praise to the mainstream media tend to receive derision (FF loved/loathed here i guess). (xpost with Ned but yes he's kinda guaged it right!)

so what's Petey Pablo into? i'm dying to know.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 2 December 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

People be likin' different kinds of music, it's true.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 2 December 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

why is this still such a novelty, that these rappers like rockers?

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 2 December 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to see Franz Ferdinand and Kanye recreate the Walk This Way video!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 2 December 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

am i the only one who thinks virtually all rock-rap collabos have sucked? walk this way was okay, but god, let these stop!

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 2 December 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Limp Bizkit ft Method Man was great you fewl!

People be likin' different kinds of music, it's true
evidently, but there's still something a bit fishy about the common trend i've identified. but i'm not reading anything more into it than 'American people playing to a British crowd' or whatever.

i figure West likes FF no more than he'd like The Streets, Kylie, B&S, Dave Gahan... See my point here?

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 2 December 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

kanye just likes being contrary. he gets a kick out of it.

dizzee likes franz too though.

im not a rapper, but i think franz only have one song they rehash about ten times over.

and no limp bizkit, except maybe rollin, was great!!!!!!

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 2 December 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

no limp bizkit was even grebt.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Thursday, 2 December 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I have something in common with Kanye. I like FF. their live show is great. ignore the hype. forget the hype. see them live and enjoy.

what is the philosophy behind being anti-hypist?

gspm (gspm), Thursday, 2 December 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

No they've had MTV hits and their album has crossed over to anybody who watches MTV

You mean anyone who watches that one hour of the day when MTV actually shows videos and not Pimp My Ride or Real World or something of that ilk.

He's an enigma, this Kanye West.
