RIP Kevin Coyne

Kevin Coyne -- musician, poet, artist; championed by John Peel with recordings on Dandelion; collaborator with the likes of Dagmar Krause, Andy Summers, and Carla Bley; talented, incredible, beautiful person all around -- died early today from the lung fibrosis he'd been battling for over a year. He was sixty.

Those of you who are familiar with him know what a huge loss this is. Those of you who aren't -- you should really look into his recordings. Some of the most gorgeous music I've ever heard.

This has been such a sad month.

*fiction writer.

god, "Talking To No-One" is beautiful.

babyalive (babyalive), Friday, 3 December 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw fuck no. Fuck fuck fuck.

I was just thinking of him TODAY, because i was thinking of urging someone to nominate Marjory Razorblade for that 1970s poll.

God damn. I just saw him live about two years ago -- he was completely great. I can't help but think of his wife and sons, who went on tour with him. His sons played in the band. His wife manned the merch table; I bought a copy of his 1999 album Sugar Candy Taxi from her. She seemed so fond of him. I talked to him on my way out of the bar when I bumped into him. I'm glad I got a chance to tell him how much I enjoyed his music.

And I just played the first Siren album last month like three times after Peel died. Damn.

What little I knew of his music was good stuff. Heartfelt, without quotes.

altho, Babyalive -- where did you hear this? His site doesn't have anything about it.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 3 December 2004 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I just did a google news on his name and got exactly one hit at launch yahoo.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 3 December 2004 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, one relevant hit.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 3 December 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm -- right you are. damn.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 3 December 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the website doesn't say it, that's true. Many people have posted on it at that huge KC Yahoo group, it's on fan sites like kevincoynepage.tk (Pascal says he heard from Helmi), and it's all over the guestbook at the official site. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure it's true, since he's been in bad health for so long (but if it isn't...oh god, please).

babyalive (babyalive), Friday, 3 December 2004 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit. Yeah.

babyalive (babyalive), Friday, 3 December 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

ahhhhhhhshitgdam. Speaking of Peel also, Kevin's Peel Sessions were the first music of his I encountered. Don't know how they rank in his overall achievements, but I'm much prejudiced in their favor. DE18117-2 is its number. Good night all, stay alive awhile.

eight months pass...
Just saw this online about a Coyne tribute concert in Chicago. Any Chi-town ILMers make it out?
