Dimebag Darrell is dead (and the repercussions)

As the previous thread has been eaten by the server downtime (general Pantera thread here). There's a lot to chew over this whole situation -- what it means for club security, clubs in general, etc. -- so for now (re)post thoughts, links, etc. here.

I would hope it won't have a big effect on club security...from all reports, this guy's intent to harm was so intense there's not much that could have been done, short of martial law.

Is there anything they don't merchandise?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 16:20 (twenty years ago)

They played D3: Mighty Ducks last night, and there's one scene where Charlie (Joshua Jackson) picks up a girl at the school when they find out they both love Pantera. Seriously.

Would it be in incredibly bad taste to start a doo-wop group called Dimebag Darrell IsDead and The Repercussions?

Washburn, Dunlop, and Seymour Duncan, etc. will have to find some new shredder to make a shit ton of "Signature" gear for.

I don't know what the scuttle is elsewhere, but in Columbus, the local club owners were all interviewed in the paper, and they all said basically that security was as good as it was ever going to get. And if they had had metal detectors at the door, the guy would have waited and shot Dimebag out in the parking lot. Also, they said that it sucks that the Alrosa will probably get sued out of business, even though the owner is one of the more responsible owners around.

So - around here anyway, there doesn't seem to be any movement toward a clampdown...

But next time you see someone get onstage who isn't in the band, look for the exit just in case.

I would tend to agree with this. The Alrosa's a reasonably large (500-1,000) club, but ISTR that there were at least two security guards on duty that night, and I can't see that hiring five more would be economically feasible for a bar that size.

I think about Little Brother's in Columbus, which essentially has *no* security in a club about half the size of the Alrosa, and I start to think that this could be the beginning of a very bad trend.

two years pass...
There's a pretty good book that is coming out that really details the shooting, shooter and especially the non-famous victims called "A Vulgar Display Of Power: Courage And Carnage At The Alrosa Villa." It's a good read.

It turns out that my humble little college-ish newspaper had two writers who were there that noght - one who took possibly the last photo of Dimebag alive. The pic is in the book and int he story that we did to preview the book signings:

It's not too late, DL (assuming you read the revive here).

I still occasionally preview shows at Alrosa Villa, scene of the crime (good reggae, sometimes good metal, rap not so much, tending to juggalo), but hadn't thought of Darrel in a while. However, recently got the excerpted statement from Lamb Of God's manager, wonder how often DD is invoked like this (prosecuter apparently thinking of it as Altamont-type situation)
“After a three month investigation, the prosecutor in the Czech Republic has decided to move forward with an indictment of Randy Blythe on the charge of manslaughter with intent to cause bodily harm...While it is a tragedy that a Lamb of God fan died following a performance by the group, in no way do I feel that Randy did anything improper that led to the young man’s injuries and subsequent death. The price of a ticket to a show does not entitle audience members access to a band’s stage. In the years since the murder on stage of Dimebag Darrell Abbott, performers of all genres have had to become more guarded while performing in response to the dangers presented by fans trying to become part of the performance.

i went to high school with this girl who has gone on to make a career out of being in various all-female metal and hard rock acts, and today she posted a pic of her holding dimebag's guitar.

rip, i guess.
