bless...anyway i keep thinking i should at least hear his and their best songs a few times, but searching for them on slsk crashed my computer last time (they're smarter than i gave them credit...)

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 10:36 (twenty years ago)

If only it was an 80s computer movie, it could go "does not compute" and blow up

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 11:15 (twenty years ago)

Newsnight was quite good last night, Sikhs Go Mad in Birmingham, followed by something boring that I can't even remember, followed by Dangerous World of Secret Filming in Zimbabwe. Mr Doherty will find it difficult to follow that.

yeh, i thought that the other night so i got hold of "kilamangiro" and "gang of gin" and they were both horrible sub-these-animal-men arse-end-of-britpop shoutalong piles of spunk. it's really not worth the hassle.

this headline from playlouder is OTM, as it were:

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 12:12 (twenty years ago)

kilamangiro has one great moment - where there's nothing going on and doherty does a scream/coooing type thing and the guitar drops into this short minor chord (i think). its lovely.

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 12:32 (twenty years ago)

they're only the band Me Me Me could've been!

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 12:36 (twenty years ago)

x-post: yes, there was one bit that made me look up from my ironing and go, gosh, that's quite good. but it seemed to last a few seconds, and was then nullified by the appalling jism that followed.

and "gang of gin" is just dreadful.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 12:54 (twenty years ago)

well that was an odd interview for newsnight. what pete doherty means to their viewers, i have no idea. must be quite a coup for rough trade to have him on newsnight.

he wasnt quite as verbally impressive as ive heard him in other interviews. maybe the crack has dulled his senses. nothing much anyone following the libs hasnt heard already in the interview, he seemed fairly bright still, if a little slow with his responses.

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:19 (twenty years ago)

"what pete doherty means to their viewers" is that the gutter music press (NME and its photo-copyists) keep insisting how hip he is, therefore people too busy to develop their own taste will enjoy a frisson of hipness by following his underachieving career.

Also, moving pictures of dead pop-stars sell records.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:35 (twenty years ago)

Also, moving pictures of dead pop-stars sell records.

I like the idea that all of this Libertines-overdosage in the media is merely a canny method of paving the way for the barrage of product when he dies. On the other hand I'm not looking forward to that barrage of product at all.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:43 (twenty years ago)

I think an honest appraisal of la Libertines' career so far would accept that they can knock out a good tune on top form, but that they fall a long way short of the hagiolatry they're currently afforded by narrow-minded middle class white boys. And I hate to summon those obvious stryw myn in discussing them, but there is no other rational explanation for the rabid end of their fanbase.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:47 (twenty years ago)

What is an example of one of these supposed Libertines 'good tunes'? I have downloaded many on recommendation and all without exception have been utter crap.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:57 (twenty years ago)

I like "What A Waster" and "Can't Stand Me Now", off the top of my head. And the point I was trying to make was that automatic hate, easy as it is in the face of their Brindie marketing, is just as unfair as uncritical slobbering.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:02 (twenty years ago)

But it is more accurate.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:03 (twenty years ago)

i think the hate they get, while understandable, is a little OTT.

some good libertines songs:

boys in the band
i get along
time for heroes
dont look back into the sun
what a waster

the whole first album is generally good, much better than the new one. although the new one does have cant stand me now, whatever happened to the likely lads, and tomblands.

splooge (thesplooge), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:09 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if I've heard any of those because I can't remember the titles (except "Can't Stand Me Now" which was horrid, singer bloke mewling tunelessly over a backing of people apparently dropping their instruments).

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Your straw man is wrong. A lot if not the majority of Libs fans happen to be middle class white girls. It's not just drugs, man sex is selling this OK indie rock. Though I liked the first album in parts, if only they had made Dog Man Star II...

elwisty, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 02:15 (twenty years ago)

I always thought that video where they're dressed up like Chelsea pensioners was by The Zutons...

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 02:31 (twenty years ago)

.. and then I forgot!

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 08:06 (twenty years ago)

Jay-zus, that was a dull interview.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 09:38 (twenty years ago)

interview highlights, anyone? transcript anywhere? kate's somehow convinced me that even though i have very little time for their music - whoever mentioned These Animal Men=OTM - the Libertines soap opera is worth tuning into now and then.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 09:49 (twenty years ago)

until doherty hooks up with the neptunes and kelis the crack addiction is of strictly tangential interest.

henry miller, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 10:01 (twenty years ago)

They had a freebie CD in The Observer, which is Newsnight with inky fingers.

I went to bed early.

Puddin'Head Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 11:00 (twenty years ago)

it was rather dull viewing.

the only that was obvious was the fact that the interviewer Kirsty (??) is a big fan.

the letter from mum was a little cringeworthy, but heartfelt.

i watched expecting pearls of wisdom .. instead he tripped out the usual junkie/deathtrip line re 'knowing when to stop' .. umm i'm sure cobain/morrison/hendrix etc said that as well
.. slurred and somewhat distant. and seriously filthy fingernails.

poor bloke. i hope he makes it through 2005.

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 11:06 (twenty years ago)

I hope we all do.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 11:08 (twenty years ago)

im starting to wonder if he even wants to make it through 2005. hes certainly made enough unreleased music to keep rough trade going for quite a bit (granted, most of it is just acoustic crap, but its still marketable).

splooge (thesplooge), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 11:42 (twenty years ago)

yeh but it all gets circulated around the fan base for free...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 11:43 (twenty years ago)

i thought his quote about 'fans ask me how i write my lyrics and where i get my clothes, they don't ask who my dealer is' in response to the criticism re that atrocious NME cool list was quite funny. is heroin really that easier to come by now than a nice suit??

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 11:49 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
