if somebody can answer this they will make my festivus.
back in my first 2 years of university (lets say 97/98) I was a very unhappy lad. one day the campus radio played a song, the last 2/3s of which I taped. It became my glum anthem, singing of which in my head got me through a lot of crap.
I left that crappy university, became much happier, and lost the cassette. But still every few months I find myself wanting that song. Is there anyone out there who can identify it from these lyric fragments that I remember:
chorus:
"All in all it was not a banner day
In fact it was pretty awful, but in the usual way
Nothing I can be proud of, nothing good to say
All in all it was hardly a banner day"
verse fragments:
"everybody says "how are you today" everybody says just fine (fine!)
Lunch at the local grease pit, it cheap and hey I don't mind"
"...and have myself a beer...
...give the TV girls a leer..."
and that's all I got.
Kind of a moderate tempo straight forward rockish feel, maybe like Mojo Nixon on a very slow day. Possibly late 80s non mainstream. I dunno. maybe not.
that's how I remember it anyway.
anyone?

four months pass...
Crikey, no action for 2 years and then whack, three on a given day in may. what's up with that.
The Starkz was a good notion but no dice, they have song called "banner year", which isn't the right one.
Years later, I'm still vexed by this question.

seven years pass...
Hugh... I'm going to rock your world today. 7+ years later, here's your answer my friend:
It's "Banner Day" by the great, great Jerry Jerry & The Songs of Rhythm Orchestra. If anybody deserved a documentary tonight it's them.
Here's the song, as a super bonus:
