I borrowed:

Bebo Valdes/Cigala: Lagrimas Negras
Gary Lucas: The Edge of Heaven
John Fahey: City of Refuge
Roy Montgomery: Scenes from the South Island (this was just put into my hands without my expecting it or knowing anything about him), but I like it so far)

I had a sprightly listen to Debussy's "La Mer" this morning.

I had an ironic, bemused listen to Chuck Mangione's "Feels So Good" lp yesterday.

I had a freaky, out-of-body listen to Irr App Ext/Nurse With Wound's "Angry Electric Finger 3" the night before that.

Today I had a thoroughly sincere listen to The Whispers "Headlights" Lp, and a somewhat distracted listen to Herbie Hancock's "Thrust" (I was also reading).

listen, listen, listen

re: "Can't Buy a Thrill"

my relatively recent infatuation with Steely Dan has sparked more arguments/annoyed more of my friends than I would've thought possible. It's weird - all my indie rock friends profess to hate it (even the ones who like prog and King Crimson!) Then last night I was with some pro-audio/studio musician types and Steely Dan came up and I got really defensive. Of course it turned out they were all Dan fans, but when I explained that I liked them for the contrast between the evil/ugly/depressing subject matter of the lyrics and the totally crystal-clean pop sheen of the music, I got a bunch of blank looks, "I'd never thought of that before", etc.

fuckin people.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 23 December 2004 01:37 (twenty years ago)

The four Billie Holiday CDs on ESP that I ordered back in November finally came and so far I'm very happy with them. I'm baffled that these recordings aren't held in higher regard. There's plenty here that is the equal to a lot of what's in the Verve box set. This is great. If you like late Billie Holiday, buy it!

LaRue (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 01:17 (twenty years ago)

MIA Diplo / Piracy (yes, I am musically retarded.)

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Just ordered a bunch thanks to gift certificates from Hannukah:

Fairport Convention -- Unhalfbricking
Radiohead -- Amnesiac
Books -- The Lemon of Pink
Sam Prekop -- s/t
David Axelrod -- Songs of Experience
Eddie Bo -- Hook and Sling
Advantage -- Advantage
Deerhoof -- Reveille
John Lee Hooker -- Serves You Right to Suffer

That might be the first time I've ever bought a bunch of CDs where the white artists greatly outnumber the black ones.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 03:44 (twenty years ago)

The Ayler box set, which is far too huge to even begin to absord, and Zigzag: 20 Junkshop Soft Rock Singles 1970-1974, esp. the urban depression of Brian Protheroe and Leo Sayer's "Why Is Everybody Going Home?" which is close to being even gayer than Jobriath.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 04:41 (twenty years ago)

I didn't like that Gary Lucas album (I mentioned in the first post) much at all. I just don't like the sound of his playing. I thought I might like him more playing old Chinese pop music (not that I'm into that or know anything about it), but he doesn't really sound so different than he did on a CD I'd bought a while back.
