RFI: Amel Larrieux and Groove Theory

It's nice to discover that radio can still hold surprises. Driving home late last night, I heard three songs from Amel Larriuex's Bravebird on the local urban station. One song in particular -- "Giving Something Up" -- really grabbed me, so I waited in the driveway to hear the ident. It was hard to make the name of the singer, especially since the DJ persisted in calling her "TheLovelyAmelLaRue," but a little googling helped me out.

Well, she certainly is lovely enough... http://www.blisslife.com/images/artists/amel_photo4_artists.jpg ... and it turns out she was the vox fem on Groove Theory's "Tell Me," a song I liked several years ago. Other than that, guest spots with the Roots & Guru, a deal with Epic, & now this Bravebird thing, apparently on her own label, Blisslife.

Jazzay prog-soul doesn't seem to be a well-loved sub-genre on ILM, but anybody who knows anything or shares my interest in this artist can join me here.

shes beautiful, and has a lovely voice, but theres something about a lot of her music since leaving GT that has made me zzzzzzzzz.

i love the first GT album though. one of the best soul albums of the 90s. on her own though, she seems to favour ambience a little too much over songcraft. maybe i should go back to her bravebird and infinite possibilities albums though just to make sure what i heard was correct.

solo, she could have been the sade of the 90s if she had better songs.

Well, I've listened to all of Bravebird now, and it's true there's little on it with quite the solidity of Groove Theory or the one song I especially liked. No doubt she's got a vision and can sing like crazy, though. I'm going to try to get copies of her albums just the same.

This is kind of OTM, but I've been listening to her first album Infinite Possibilities a lot lately and it's really really good. "Sweet Misery" is stunning.

Groove Theory is far too underrated.

To think '10 Minute High' came out as a single in 1994.

And Amel's solo hit was hot too

Thugocrat (PappaWheelie V), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

that 'Trouble' song is all kinds of catchy

bnw, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

I get the feeling LA Jay was an uncredited producer on her solo.

"Tell Me" sounds like slow piano house.

mr. mayan end times guy (The Reverend), Thursday, 13 November 2008 08:17 (seventeen years ago)

I like the cool-breeze slowness. I've never checked, but that type of song is a natural for a pitched-up house mix.

Embarrassing that the thread title is un-searchable. It's Larrieux. Mods?

listening to 'ice cream everyday' on repeat, more or less - this album is a masterpiece and unlike any other album i've heard. feels like it'll go down as a classic in decades to come, got that veneer of exquisite songcraft, interesting yet coherent production choices and epic emotional grasp

came here to say 'moment to reflect' holds up better than most songs of the era, may have to give the whole thing a rescreen

As a huge fan of the first Groove Theory album (which I regard as an alltime classic), Andy was always a little underwhelmed by her solo work — even though "Get Up" now feels just as classic as any of the Groove Theory singles. It was not especially "bad" or poorly executed music, it just always felt a bit. . . I don't know, "predictable"? That feels like maybe too harsh a word to use for it. The only other things that come to mind are also just as inadequate to properly articulate what I'm feeling. We checked out all of her albums and they were always very enjoyable while they're playing, but nothing all that memorable ever stuck with me.

Just revisited "Moment to Reflect" because of your shoutout there and had much of the same impression: it is quite good, but I'm not exactly excited to check out more.

I think she is ripe for a comeback of sorts at this point. I would certainly welcome it.

Andy = I, I presume, or did I miss something?

anyway, I feel a sudden overwhelming urge to play “I Do Take” now - a song she shockingly didn’t perform when I saw her live in 2014

Yes, sometimes Andy speaks in the third person. Apologies for the confusion.

"I Do Take" was my favorite song from Ice Cream Everyday when it was new. Revisiting that one now and yes: this is a very beautiful song. I really like that part where the harmonies come in: "There's enough love in the world to heal every wound inside." Don't know why but that part always stuck out.
